I'm quite serious although I admit I've never been in a situation where I haven't had a phone number for an employer to contact me. Have you been through that situation (since you asked)? I actually have an employee who can't pay his phone bill but seems to be able to figure out to communicate with me one way or the other when he needs to.

And just because you care about someone doesn't mean you can or are even in a position to open your home to them.
I guess you and I are different. Even if my living situation sucked if someone I cared for was living on the street I would welcome them to sleep on my bathroom floor if that was the difference between staying warm or sleeping on a sidewalk.

The homeless shade in this thread is pretty disappointing. Phobia just went on a Trump-esque rant. Reminds me quite a bit of the old welfare queen stereotype. Some of y'all should really look at the "why's" rather than relying on your biases to create a narrative for all of them.
Leave out the politics. If you need a link to the TOS let me know.

Also, please google how much panhandlers make in a year.

I'll admit I never give to the homeless and never will. I also don't feel sorry for them. Sure there are people out there who really need the help but there's also too many frauds.

I have donated my time at homeless shelters in the past before. The ones I went to you had to have a job or actively looking for one.

I just hope I am never put into that situation and being homeless is something I would have to experience. The amount on uncaring and the negative light cast of the poor and homeless not only in this thread but in our society as a whole is disappointing. I'm sure most would be more than willing to sweep them under the rug if they could.

Actually if you go back and read the posts the uncaring and negative light cast is not towards the actual poor and homeless people at all but instead towards the many that make more money than they should panhandling for a living.

Unfortunately it's oftentimes hard to decipher the difference between the two in the city.

Not sure where you live or what your experience with the homeless is but it isn't always cut and dry.

And I'm someone who goes and serves food every year at a homeless shelter for either Thanksgiving or Christmas.

There is actually a panhandling ring that sets up up and down 81 locally.

I don't consider panhandlers in the same camp.

But not showing any sympathy to those less fortunate is uncaring to me.

News that make you say WTF?

There's a different guy each day it seems at the intersection to get on the toll road that always has a sign and asking for money. It's those people that I don't like.

In Mississippi I've seen people asking for money then they go hop in their car.

I've seen people give the "homeless" person food and they denied it because they wanted money instead.

"Fifty-three percent of panhandlers said they beg seven days a week. Sixty percent said they earn $25 or less each day, while 27 percent said they earn up to $50."-SFGate

That's just in SF. The numbers are all over the place anyway, varying per person, per locale, and it's not like they report their income. Obviously there's no consistent wage or salary but it's those anomalies that make the news and fuel the rage of all of the "hard-working Americans."

Re: News that make you say WTF?

I feel for the homeless. I don't like to see anyone suffering.

But as others have said....there is just way too much fraud going on in social services.

In the area I work in....I've seen people whip out the EBT card.....purchase hundreds of dollars of garbage....then walk out to their brand new Range Rover.

Even worse(or maybe not......this food is probably going to people who need it...but DEFINITELY not how it was intended)......there are supermarkets in certain neighborhoods that also sell 55 gallon plastic drums.
What are those for?.....well people here in N.Y.C. buy food on their EBT card and one of those drums....they fill it with the food and then send it on to family in other countries(there are shipping places set up pretty much for this).
So a system in place to help someone needy here....is being exploited.
Is it someone needy in Haiti...the West Indies....Uganda? Probably....but who knows.....maybe it's being sold over there by someone.....

It's easy to understand why some are not so apt to feel bad for everyone receiving assistance.

I understand how the normal hiring process goes but we aren't talking about a normal hiring circumstance.

I'm not sure what line of work you are in but I'm assuming that someone who is homeless and without an address has to go about getting a job a different way than a normal applicant.

One would have to start at basically a bottom of the barrel job where they walk in, get hired and are asked to start on Monday. It's not as simple as let me see your resume and we'll give you a call.

I'm pretty sure that if someone doesn't have a home address but has a phone number they don't get through basic screening for most companies.

I guess we are. Lol @ having enough compassion to put a roof over their head, but not enough to stop yourself from criticizing them for having a phone. But feel free to downplay the complexities of such relationships if it makes you feel holier than thou.
Spare me the "holier than thou" talk. I've been in the darkest of places. If your goal was to get a rouse out of me by saying that then you're talking to the wrong guy. I was unemployed for two years and moved here to get a job. I did something about my situation. I know it's not always that easy but this is pretty unfair if you want to continue to have an actual discussion.

I've already stated several time why I have trepidation towards those who ask for money. I have no way to know the difference between panhandlers and the actual down on their luck homeless.

If you really have no intention of having a rational discussion just let me know, I would be happy to stop.

                    Who's talking politics?
By bringing up a potential Presidential candidates views you did. Our differences aside. Just drop this portion of it.

I really think you are mis-reading what some of us that you disagree with are saying.

I have great compassion for those who have truly run into bad luck and love to help them when I can. I've made that quite clear but you've chosen to ignore that.

I'm sorry, but even a homeless man with a smart phone is overdoing it. If you are begging for change to eat dinner that day but paying $30 a month in data that doesn't make sense to me.

That can be dinner for a week if done right rather than paying for a data package.

Re: News that make you say WTF?

I'm not sure what sort of bottom of the barrel job you're talking about that hires people right off of the street without processing an application or running a background check. You make it sound a whole helluva lot simpler than me.

And you know you don't even need a cell phone plan to use a phone, right?

You can get a cheap used smartphone off of craigslist or even a pawnshop for $75 or less. There's plenty of businesses that provide free wifi you can use for connectivity. You can get a google voice number for free. All of a sudden you have a phone, internet access, and phone number for well under $100.

A lot of homelessness is a result of simple laziness and wanting a handout. Mental illness is a factor but laziness and the lack of motivation are the primary causes.
