They were not a bad band, but their music has not aged well; at least, not as well as the music of some of their contemporaries. Cobain's lyrics were often fairly nonsensical, he lacked great vocal ability, and he was just a pretty average guitarist.
They did sell a ton of records before Cobain died, but as is often the case, I think that the extent of Nirvana's commercial success - their success in excess of their contemporaries - can mostly be attributed to dumb luck.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Not going to debate Nirvana's place in music history.
What I do know for certain is that Lounge Act is undeniably a great ****ing song!Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I'd rather deal with the poser Nirvana children than to try and fight them off and out of the Soundgarden camp.

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I think with Nirvana, it wasn't just the music; it was style, substance, and shaking up the industry.
STYLE: it was more about how they captured the kid's attention back then with the anti-glamour, anti-hair metal/pop style. The 'grunge' look of being unwashed and Salvation Army beater clothes, flannels, etc. Ever see Cobain dressed like he had millions of dollars? I haven't. Kids loved how unpretentious they looked compared to the hair bands.
SUBSTANCE: Lyrics and vocal delivery born of pain instead of just singing about lightweight subject matter, which also spoke to a lot of kids. Whether what he was saying made sense really doesn't matter. How much sense did Lennon make in a lot of his songs? LOL (hey, I only brought up Lennon because of the weight of fans who have drawn that comparison since Kurt's death. Also, I firmly believe Lennon would have LOVED Cobain).
SHAKE UP THE INDUSTRY: The scene that Nirvana was a part of had been going on for years in Seattle, they were just the main band that popularized the sound, and just one FORM of it at that. However, Nirvana really hitting the scene at large punched hair metal right between the eyes and swept the leg. They really helped to make 'alternative' rock the new mainstream. They spawned a ton of imitators and rip off bands. They disrupted the established formula at that time, and (unfortunately) created a new one.
Is Nirvana overrated? It's an opinion either way. But there is a lot to support that they at least had a significant impact on the music world in the 1990's that carried over for years, and in effect brought in a change-of-the-guard.
So, who has done that since then?
For the record, I like Nirvana, but they certainly aren't a favorite of mine. But I do recognize their impact, and lament that the industry has languished since the early 2000's because either the next kick-in-the-pants for music hasn't been found yet, or has been suppressed into indie-dom by the industry because they are too chicken-**** to bring them out in the open.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: Uncommon Opinions
A few of my personal favorites of Nirvana's:
--Aneurysm - Live from The Muddy Banks of the Wishkah
--Negative Creep - Bleach
--Pennyroyal Tea - In Utero
Their acoustic cover of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' (MTV Unplugged) still can send chills, too.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: Uncommon Opinions
I can appreciate this list, though I'd have Lithium more towards the front, and Dumb is definitely in there at the front, as well as their cover of The Man Who Sold the World.Comment

Re: Uncommon Opinions
Listened to a few of the Nirvana songs and they're better than I remember.
I was just young to really be big into them when they were huge, so missed that a bit. Looking back I always thought they were overrated cause Cobain killed himself, but listening a bit I can hear something there...
I need to remember that not every song is like Teen Spirit (which isn't that great, just a bunch of unintelligible yelling).Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Radio Friendly Unit Shifter would be my first choice if I was listening to Nirvana. Possibly Drain You if not that.
