        George Carlin was overated.

I completely disagree, but have my own uncommon opinion about Carlin:

I prefer his later stuff over his earlier material, although I think ALL of it rules.

Jimi Hendrix was good, but nowhere close to being considered the best guitar player ever.

He was certainly good, but what made him exceptional was his intuitive and organic connection to the instrument, that he could just channel the sounds in his head directly to the instrument. But he was no technician like Steve Vai, for example.

Also interesting is that these amazing technicians like Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, Eric Johnson, Randy Rhoads, etc all gave it up to Hendrix even though they could technically play circles around him in a wank-fest.

I'd probably have to go with Eric Johnson on that one.

For some reason I just cannot get into "technically advanced" guitarists. From time to time I'll throw on one of those albums, but I like the mix, trade-offs, and call-backs of rhythm and lead. To me, Jimi was a 2-1 in guy since he could basically play rhythm and lead at the same time. Plus, like you said he just had an organic connection to his guitar and music that just flowed out of him.

Some of my favorite guitarists to listen to:

--Randy Rhoads (sheer fluidity. man, what could have been...)
--Eric Johnson (amazing tone and variety, a melodic speedster)
--Alex Lifeson (great textures, VERY underrated solo player)
--Brian May (you know it's him from the first note. Very inventive)
--Jimi Hendrix (sheer feel, and took what Beck was doing at the time w/feedback to the next level)
--The Edge (from 'Boy' through 'All That You Can't Leave Behind', he and Alex Lifeson are to me the two best textural guitarists)
                                --Pete Townshend (raw power)
--Tom Morello (stunning player w/best use of effects since Hendrix)
--Mark Knopfler (just listen to the man's work with Dire Straits!)
