Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Do you just buy pretty much any store bought ham for this? I've always wanted to try it but wasn't sure what type of ham to use since most are pre-smoked/cooked.Comment

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
A non smoked ham, also known as a Green Ham, will result more in pulled pork than it will like sliced ham. Unless you know how to cure and smoke a green ham.
Here is a good resource reference for you....

Really any store bought pre-smoked ham will do.

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Anybody have any recommendations for a charcoal grill? I have the Weber 18.5" kettle. It was "too big" for my patio at the apartment, but with abundant deck space available I feel like I could use a bigger grilling area especially since I like grilling sides along with the entrees.

I grilled a 9.5lb prime rib for Christmas. Put it on at 10:30, took it off at 12:15 and carved it 20 minutes later. It turns out perfect every time. Get yourself a Weber cookbook, it tells you how to make everything on the grill and has alot of good rub and sauce recipies with it.

Yeah, those cookbooks are nice. The pages are nice and glossy, too, so its easy to wipe off any food or drool from looking at the pictures.

Are you looking for a smoker/grill?
Are you interested in half charcoal/half gas?
Do you like the Weber design and prefer to stick with that or do you wanna try the barrel design?Comment

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Wow those hams look amaaaaazing.
My fiancé staffed me with grilling as soon as I walked in the door from work. Charcoal wouldn't stay lit, too cold I guess. Not that windy. I am disappointed. Wasted a batch of charcoal and now can't taste the delicious grilled steak flavor.

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Smoking, on the other hand, is something I've always wanted to try, but just haven't yet. Considering that most can be turned into smokers with some DIY magic having it be a smoker, too, isn't something that I would require, but would surely like to experiment with.

Re: Official OS BBQ/Grilling Thread
Well depending on your budget, there are alot of Gas/Charcoal Hybrid Grills you can buy if you really want one.
If you like the Kettle design, then Weber is the ONLY way for you to go since they own that specific design.
You can get "domed" grills, but they wont be a "Weber".
As for a smoker, yes, you can DIY any grill to be a smoker.
I usually suggest unless youre going to do some serious smoking ALOT, you dont need a specific smoker, just use what you have.
As you see in my Ham Pics, I use my dual chamber charcoal grill to smoke and it works just fine and even better than some smokers Ive seen.
Most smokers have the smoke chamber separate from the food chamber and that can make it very difficult to regulate the heat of the food chamber. Hybrids will be tough to smoke in, but Im sure you can do it.
Here are a couple of Hybrids I would LOVE to have....
Dyna-Glo Dual Fuel Propane Gas and Charcoal Grill
Char-Broil Combination Charcoal Grill and Gas GrillComment

I had something like this in mind: http://www.amazon.com/Char-Griller-2...=operasport-20.
Once warmer weather starts coming back then I'll start hovering around Lowes and see what they have.
