Re: What happened to good music?
A great album. But the point is that while all that good music from the past exists, good bands are still putting out good albums in their own right. And saying that music today doesn't have soul or the songwriting has no meaning is lazy and closed-minded.Comment

Re: What happened to good music?
For the people who are saying that all of the popular music back in the day was good, you do realize that two of the most popular songs in 1990 were U Can't Touch This and Ice Ice Baby, right?Comment

I don't think anyone is saying that at all. What others are saying, and someone can correct this if I'm wrong, was that the diversity and quality of music released on at the most popular level had a more memorable and talent quality instead of labels coming out with the next McBand copy.HELLO BROOKYLN.

Re: What happened to good music?
As a kid in the 70's, I had to suffer thru the disco era. (Ack!)
However, there were some great folk singers/songwriters as well. Jim Croce.... America.... John Denver....etc.
Talk about songs written with feeling!Comment

Re: What happened to good music?
I tend to agree that the 1980's and 1990's just had 'more' good music than must be out there now...I haven't listened to/never listen to the radio anymore, but anytime I try I swear there are like 5 songs on that play over and over.
I do have a theory on music though...I think the music you were into during your formative years (teens usually) is what is 'your' best. For me, the late '80s into the late '90s really hits that spot. I thought the 2000's were flat out garbage, but I talk to my younger sister who grew up as a teen in the 2000's and she talks about that music like I do the 80's/90's.
It must be the memories/emotions tied to the music that makes it so much better for us...."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Good music still exists - and there are some great artists... But times change. I love the 70's and 80's rock and metal (Mountain, Zeppelin, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc)... But eras come and go - musical styles simply change. It's not that there's no good music - but there's not music like there was and there likely never will be; it was a generational thing and that generation has passed. I'm glad to see some of them still making music. Black Sabbath is giving it a go, but I'm even skeptical of that just because so much time has passed and it seems almost impossible for a musician to not be influenced by what today's music sounds like.
Personally, I have a hard time finding any newer music I like. I stick to the old stuff that I grew up with and the stuff I still love.
Big fan of AIC, Zeppelin, Metallica, etc. There is just very little new music that I can find that is stylistically similar to my tastes but isn't completely devoid of creativity and originality.
A lot of things were going well with 'active' rock through most of the '90s, I think. But somewhere around 2000 it all just went to complete hell. There are exceptions of course, but very few that I can find that I really enjoy.
I do love the new Sabbath, fwiw.Last edited by Brandon13; 04-23-2013, 04:52 AM.Comment

I like the popular music today so it doesn't bother me. To me this is a great age for music. If
It wasn't for the Internet I wouldn't have found one of my favorite bands, Shiny Toy Guns. If you can't find great music then you're not looking in the right place.MLB: Texas Rangers
Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
NCAA: SMU, UTA
NFL: Dallas Cowboys
NHL: Dallas Stars
NBA: Dallas Mavericks
I own a band check it outComment

Re: What happened to good music?
Come to Nashville my friend, we've got more good music than we know what to do with
Seriously, just don't listen to any pop stations, find an indie station in your area, ideally one that will play local music"You can not ensure success, but you can deserve it." - John Quincy Adams

Re: What happened to good music?
Go through any flea market/antique store that sells records and you'll see there was quite a bit of absolute **** released back in the day. Just like today.
Very few things have changed.

Re: What happened to good music?
Haven't read the whole the whole thread but don't judge the overall quality of music by the commercialization of radio.
There is still a lot of great music out there. You just have to find it.
And like Fresh said, the 70s, 80s, and 90s had it's fair share of dog **** music as well.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

Re: What happened to good music?
I grew up in the 70's so, I know there were good songs and there were crap songs as well. And they repeated the popular songs on the radio just as much as they do now.
Our kids are into what I call "bubblegum music." They control the music in the car when they are in the car 95% of the time. I Heart Radio and it's local competitors. I constantly joke with kids, is this Bruno Mars or Michael Jackson. Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and another alum of American Idol, to me, all sound alike, so, when a song comes on, oh, is this Carrie, Katy or whoever. Fun, lead singer sounds like Geddy Lee without the prog rock.
We had dive bomb music in the 70's too, Disco Duck and anything disco related.
I tend to agree with a buddy of mine, we tend to gravitate to the music we grew up on when we get older.Comment

I suppose this is where I suggest good music went out the window when Beethoven & Mozart passed.Comment
