    Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

So I'm generally not one to fall for the TV informercial workouts but with my new work schedule, I'm kind of on a time crunch when it comes to making it to crossfit.

So one of my friends recommended Focus T25, from the guy who made Insanity. All I have to say, is the program is absolutely no joke. Along with a little change in my diet, in 4 days I'm already seeing results.

I honestly recommend it for anyone that has limited time to hit the gym. Lot of great instruction and a low impact modifier to ensure you can get down the form first. And if you really commit, the workout kicks your *** lol

Honestly want to try to get into yoga minus the weird meditation stuff. I need to get my flexibility up seriously. Do you all have any good recommendations? Staying stuck to the tried and true weight lifting with a light job to warm the old bones up. If I could get into doing a 15-30 minute yoga session at least 3 times a week, I'd be set. Trying to get into the gym 3 times a week but the schedule is crazy. Want to get up to 190 by the summer and have better strength.

DDP yoga is great if you want to stay away from traditional yoga. To be honest, i didn't want to get into the meditation stuff either when i started and it eventually led me to it anyway because it adds to the experience and it really helps with so many other aspects in my life but I do understand the hesitancy.

I would start out with basic stretching that you already know but focus on breathing.

The most important is getting breathing down when you stretch, always breath through the nose. The breathing your trying to accomplish is big and slow. Big meaning you want to not fill only the chest with air but also the torso area. Each breath should be about 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out. You'll want to to do about 5 sets per stretch/pose. Each breath you try to go deeper in the stretch before the previous breath.

Youtube always was there for me when i needed a stretching routine or you can follow a yoga routine through there too while at home.

I suggest getting a mat, a yoga block and a strap to help deepen stetches. Also what helps with flexibility is using a foam roller. Foam roller helps with everything from recovery, massage, getting kinks out after lifitng and also aids in flexibility. There a ton of videos on youtube for that too.

        Hope that helps.

          Day 4: TSC complete.

          1st 300 challenge done.

          Pushups: 40

          Pullups: 12

3 Mile Run: Didn't make it. Tanked at 2.5 miles at exactly 30 minutes. Yes that is 12 minute miles. Started off just pacing myself with the plan to pick it up towards the end. That didn't happen as I started tiring quickly and then it was just a mental drain seeing the 3 minute lap times.

          Total points: 140

Had a good weekend. Ran 4.5 miles and did some bodyweight exercises yesterday. Today I got a 90-minute bike ride. Would've liked the ride to have been longer but the wind gusts here today were ridiculous.

Had my annual check-up last week. Everything was good, aside from my HDL being low (it's been in the 30-39 range for years). The good news there is that even with the low HDL, I'm at more than a 3.5 ratio when you divide the HDL by my overall cholosterol, which is the range you want to be in. I'm going to see if I can raise the HDL by changing my diet up a bit this year and exercising more, but I have a feeling it is what it is at this point.

Plant based diet or even more vegetables and fruits will help those numbers.

Today is a scheduled off day but since I did so poorly yesterday on my run, I am about to run another 3 miles straight then walk/jog another 2 miles = 5 miles clocked in for today's workout.

I'm also going to start running 3 miles every morning before work then 5 miles per day on the weekends.

Wow what a difference a day makes. Felt great during my run, kept a higher pace and even sprinted the final 1 1/2 laps to complete my three mile run without stopping. I must not have fueled up right yesterday as I was sluggish, tired and wasn't feeling it.

For now, I am just going to concentrate on finishing my daily three mile runs faster before upping the distance.

May I ask if you are doing a specific training program to help prep for it?

Anyone can train for a half marathon in 20 weeks – especially with this training plan and advice from pro-marathoner and running coach Becky Wade Firth.

Thanks I'm starting the 16 week program tomorrow. Probably going to run 3 miles on off days anyways.

                                Re: 2015 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Official weigh in at 241 today. Need to be 220 by my wedding which is 7 months away.

Height for reference: 6-3 with a wide shoulder frame.

Obligatory excuses for my falling off:

Past two years had a torn right patella tendon and then a torn labrum. I came back decent from the knee injury but the labrum killed me. I still couldn't do a pull up and it's been 10 months. When you put 9 screws in a shoulder it really makes the rehab miserable.

The only saving grace of the labrum injury is that it's my left, non-dominant, arm. It has been such a hurdle to overcome and I still have quite a ways to go.

I'm finally in the right state of mind which is really positive. Spent too much time not caring and not giving a F. Now it's just one meal/workout at a time.
