Not a book, but I use a really cool app called Skyview and it uses your camera to identify constellations, stars, planets, satellites and other stuff. And you can get info about everything if you tap on it.

    I recommend the paid version. I think it's $2-3.

Has anyone seen the ISS with their naked eye moving through the sky? I got lucky and saw it once about a year ago at dusk. It was pretty cool.

I know you can find out where it's gonna be, so I need to do that again.

I did, a year or so ago. I got off work, was driving home at dusk and I see this weird shinny "square" is the best way to explain it. I thought it was 100% a UFO lol, come to find out ISS was being reflected just right for my area to see it.

It was pretty cool but shocking at the time.

Yeah, that's basically how it looked. Pretty amazing sight to behold.

I can't believe I just now stumbled upon this thread. I love astronomy.

The big talk around here is the solar eclipse that is taking place later this month. Western KY University and the local school district in the county with the best viewing of the solar eclipse have cancelled classes for that day.

I'm hoping to get the opportunity to get out and see it.

PVarck...good pics. I love when other planets come into view.

For anyone interested this website...https://www.space.com/ will give you the best dates/times to view planets of our solar system.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

In other news I wanted to try and film the eclipse with my galaxy s8. Anyone know anything about that?

Figured just need a mount and a decent lense that fits on phone well. Maybe a filter of some sort?
You have to get a filter, same thing for your eyes. The filter will also give it a better orange/red image.

They make some cheap ones that you can just tape down and fit over the whole lens.

Ugh. I'm trying to find eclipse glasses but there are so many fakes out there, even on Amazon. And the ones I'm seeing that are legit are as high as $50.

Guess I should have jumped on this a while ago.

Where I live I will see about 80% sun coverage.

Also, Saturn is visible to the lower left of the moon at dusk this month. I'll try to get pics. the iPhone needs a moon filter.

I tried that with some cheap glasses. With filter placed directly on top of the lense it doesn't focus in well. I'd also like a filter that isn't as hardcore as something like viewing glasses.

A few hours drive from me has full eclipse, but I hear the area is going to be packed.

I think the $1 cheap glasses work well enough. I bought a bunch of them and have been handing them out like Halloween candy, lol

Is there a map that shows the time of day the eclipse will occur for your region?

I'm excited to see the eclipse but the local news coverage of it is getting ridiculous.

Google also has a site that shows what the sun will look like and the time. It shows it moving through the sky for your area.
