Well first of all, for good measure it's actually just $24.1k. But after you include fees and sales tax, that number climbs a bit.

I don't think I'm too worried about the price, it's more so deciding whether to actually make the investment if you know what I mean. Ten years from now, $7000 hopefully won't make a difference to me at all (and it shouldn't right now as long as I still have money put away) and I will have the car that's not "of my dreams" so to speak but something that I won't be looking back and saying I wish I got something that suits me a little more.

The question has always become when do I make the plunge. I intended on driving this car for maybe another four years, but the engine is worsening a bit over time. The thing I kind of feel "ehh" about is that it has three brand new belts, a new battery, new actuators, new brakes, new wipers, a relatively new radiator, and I just paid for registration renewal last month. I wish I didn't recently pay for these items had I known my car was just going to junk right after that, and I fear this will happen again with the current state my car is in.

At the same time though, I'm also looking to buy a house someday, so I just want to make sure I have more than enough for that down payment and still comfortably have enough in the bank.

Trying to push it just made my car rattle, my engine smoke up and my engine light start blinking again.

Thankfully no cars were behind me at the time so I could crank my wheel right, roll backwards to the curb, and roll all the way back to the flat ground area before I had to sit there and wait until I could time the light at the top of the hill to turn green and build momentum into going up the street and making it, but that's all I was left with option-wise. It was very sad.
Holy crap, that is scary. Was this is in San Francisco somewhere? That's like my worst nightmare when I'm driving up super-steep hills....I always think "what if my car doesn't make it?"...

I think in general, when you get to that point in your car's life, you have to basically do the math and decide at what point you are going to cut bait with your current ride and stop throwing good money after bad. The registration and all the other work you just had done? Yeah, that totally sucks, but it's a sunk cost at this point (e.g. you can't get it back no matter what you do). At this point, decide how much money it makes sense to put into the car given its likely forward lifetime (or your likely continued ownership), and if the costs to repair/maintain exceed whatever number you come up with (let's say, at $2000 it doesn't make sense to repair), then you buy the new ride.

I would never have thought about all of this but I'm sorta going through the same thing. After housing, cars are probably among the most expensive things anyone buys in their lifetimes....

^ Right, that's pretty much where I am.. The problem is that I can't guarantee that whatever repair will get me where I need to be. If I want this car to run for like four more years, I don't know if plunging $1200 will make that happen. Maybe my engine will go to crap again in five months, you know? It's just hard to tell overall. That's the tricky part. I could either go on for a long, long time... or I couldn't. Just can't know at all.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah that hill was in San Francisco. Not in the heart of downtown, though. Maybe about 9 minutes away from AT&T Park for reference.

Apparently hot milk with cereal is a thing? Like heating up the milk and then pouring it on the cereal(at least I hope that's how it goes, because they better not pour/heat the milk BEFORE pouring the cereal).

Oatmeal obviously you heat up the milk with it, but never heard of heating up milk for regular cereal.

That sounds disgusting. I love my milk freezing cold (not literally) in my cereal.

Not a fan of the cereal getting soggy in general. I like when the milk starts to taste like the cereal though, when it comes to second-serving time. But hot milk? I don't even want to test it.

It's like this one time I thought maybe microwaving my barbecue sauce would taste good with chicken, because hot maple syrup is awesome on pancakes and French toast. I soon found out that wasn't a very good idea.

Basically, if I haven't heard of it before living on this planet for about three decades, there's probably a reason I haven't done so.

That new Honda Accord commercial showing all the different decades of accords is dope.

I owned the exact first two models they showed, down to the color even.

There are some crazy hills in SF for sure. Scary stuff if your ride isn't up to snuff.

I think it depends on what the issue in need of repair is - if it's something major like a transmission or critical engine fix, I think you move on. If it's a matter of replacing an ignition coil or something like that, I think you consider it. But yeah, the math is not necessarily straightforward and obviously a lot of other things come into play. I think if the cost of repair is significantly more than the cost of a downpayment on a comparable new car, though, you have to consider not throwing good money after bad at that point.

Especially if you have to drive up and down hills like that.
