Newcastle United 2015/16 Season: December 2015

(EL 5 A) 3-2 v SC Braga (Subotic 10', Cabella 19', Montero 72') (Rafa 41', 53')

A great start to the month as we sealed our passage to the knockout stages of the Europa League with this hard fought win over a Braga side still clinging on to the chance of qualifying before this match. The game started great for us, finding ourselves 2-0 up within 20 minutes with our mercurial playmaker Cabella assisting the first and scoring the other. The first was a beautifully weighted corner which fell perfectly for Neven Subotic to head in at the far post. 9 minutes later, Cabella notched a goal for himself, creating space for himself within some slack defending, curling a low shot around the keeper and wheeling away towards our travelling support who came to Portugal en masse. Braga nicked a goal before half time, our resistance broken after a free kick was launched into the box, Rafa heading low to Krul's right. After the break, Braga came out swinging, buoyed by the news that Standard Liege were currently 1-1 v FC Zurich, meaning a win for Braga would put them in the driving seat for qualifying come the final game. The equaliser came 8 minutes into the half, Rafa receiving the ball on the edge of the box, then beating Cahill and firing into the roof of the net. News soon filtered through though that Liege went 1-0 up in Zurich, meaning Braga needed to win this game or else they would be unable to qualify. Their desperation led to us winning the match, catching them on the break, with Montero and Aubameyang carving the defence with quick passes leading to an empty net for the Ecuadorian to tap in to.

15. (A) 2-2 draw v QPR (Dybala 37', Cabella 85') (Austin 6', Fer 28')

Frustrating game for us, we seemed off the pace all game long and we feel lucky to escape with a point in a game that I had originally marked as one of the easier games of the month. QPR took a quick lead with Charlie Austin bundling the ball in after a scrappy exchange in the box lead to a scramble and fortune favoured the R's in this one. QPR went 2-0 up in fine style, Leroy Fer blasting in from a very tight angle, Krul got a fingertip to it but not enough to stop such a venomous strike. We reduced the arrears with a Dybala shot which took a deflection on the way in, completely wrongfooting Robert Green in the QPR goal. Second half we pushed on, knowing we needed something from this to keep our place in the top 4. As the minutes started ticking away, our urgency almost resulted in catastrophe, Austin managing to dispossess Subotic on the halfway line and have a clear run towards Krul in goal, thankfully, Austin saw his effort round the keeper cannon off the post then into the arms of Krul. As QPR started sitting back, trying to hold on to the slender advantage, they made the critical mistake of giving us a free kick 20 yards out, Cabella stepped up and duly dispatched it with ease. We piled on the pressure in search of a winner but time wasn't on our side, but a point will do as it just keeps us 3rd in the PL, ahead of Man United on goal difference.

16. (H) 2-1 win v Nott'm Forest (Dybala 11', Cabella 45+3') (Lansbury (p) 66')

A tale of keeper mistakes in this game in what was an entertaining attacking game. We took an early lead after Dybala took advantage of de Vries parrying the ball in his path for an easy tap in. The lead was doubled right on the stroke of half time, Cabella with a fairly tame strike which de Vries should really have caught with ease, yet inexplicably pushed it into the net. I will put video of this below this match report, crazy goalkeeping error by the Forest keeper. Forest, to their credit, kept on attacking throughout the game. A feature seen in their games this season, even though it leaves them rooted at the bottom due to slack defending. They were gifted a way back into the game after Krul took down Assombalonga in the box for seemingly no reason, off the ball challenge and the Dutch stopper was lucky to stay on the field. His punishment came in having to pick the ball out of the net, Henri Lansbury converting the penalty to give Forest a glimmer of hope, but we held on to our lead and took the 3 points.

17. (A) 2-0 win v Everton (Montero 44', Dybala 45')

Two goals in the space of a minute won us the points in a rather drab game where both teams seemed very tired. Montero scored after sliding in at the far post to tap in an Aubameyang cross. A minute later Dybala scored with a curling shot from the corner of the 18 yard box, slowly looping over the keeper into the top right corner, a pearler! Held on in the second half against very little resistance, so I held back and settled for what we had.

(EL 6 H) 2-1 win v FC Zurich (Hernandez 27', Aarons 60', Colback s/o 40') (Etoundi 9')

With our qualification assured, I sent out a weakened side, knowing that a loss could potentially knock us down to 2nd in the group and given a tie against a group winner, but I decided to go with it anyway. The decision looked a wrong one after 9 minutes when Etoundi lashed home a quick volley from a corner to the far post. Luckily, word came through that SC Braga had a 2-0 lead over Standard Liege, so I would be group winner even if we lose unless Liege come back to win v Braga. To make things even better for us, we got an equaliser, Abel Hernandez, on a rare start for us, coasting in to head in a Sissoko corner. Our night was made a little tricky when Jack Colback was given a straight red card before the break for a ridiculously stupid challenge. Thankfully it didn't have too much of an effect as Rolando Aarons managed to weave through the Zurich defence, passing to Anita who duly passed back allowing the young lad to strike at the near post to give us the lead. This combined with Braga beating Liege 4-0 meant we qualified as Group H winners.

The draw for the round of 32 gave us a tricky tie against Besiktas JK of Turkey, with the first leg in February at the Ataturk Stadium and second leg a week later at St James' Park.

18. (H) 2-2 draw v Man City (Montero 17', 65') (Negredo 33', 89')

Disappointed to not come out of this with a win against Man City, who have been faltering this season. We took the lead through a Montero volley that Joe Hart got a hand to, but it couldn't stop the inevitable. Our lead lasted 16 minutes, when Alvaro Negredo, seemingly revitalised after his loan at Valencia last season, headed in at the near post, using his strength to power over Subotic and Santon. We thought we nicked the lead again before half time as Dybala looked to have beaten the offside trap and tapped in, but the flag came up pretty late while Dybala ran off celebrating. We eventually did regain the lead midway through the second half, Montero with his second after some good build up play, patiently finding a gap to exploit before drifting in and shooting from close range. We looked like we were going to hold on to the win until Negredo popped up again this time heading against the crossbar but having the presence of mind to tap in the rebound instantly, just before injury time. Completely deflated us.

19. (A) 1-0 win v Swansea (Cahill 54')

Boxing Day saw us visit the Liberty Stadium. A great away section could be heard over the home crowd, who were seemingly still munching on turkey I guess. Due to it being Christmas time, it made sense that we had a Christmas miracle, Gary Cahill scoring the only goal of the game, a volley from the edge of the box after Swansea headed away a corner from us. I don't know what Cahill was doing there, but it worked and it got us the win on a chilly day. The win, combined with Southampton beating Man United, meant we'd be in 2nd place at the halfway point of the season, 2 points behind leaders Chelsea for the start of 2016.

After this game, the draw for the FA Cup 3rd Round was made, where we will begin our defence of the trophy away to Barnsley in what should be a great tie at Oakwell.

Thoughts on December

Two months unbeaten now, which at a tricky point when fixtures pile up, is a tremendous feat for us. Looking back, I'm disappointed we didn't get wins for the whole month when you look at the manner of our two drawn games. Wins in both of those would have us top of the league by 2 points if we'd managed it. But, we have a favourable set of fixtures in January, where I will strive to pick up as many points as possible, looking to keep Chelsea on their toes as my original aim of securing Champions League football has now turned into a personal target of winning the Premier League, something our fans would have said was impossible when I started managing this great club. Challenging at the top is what any club should want to do and I believe it's a testament to how far this club has come when people refer to us as genuine title contenders. That aside, I look forward to taking the club to Turkey for the Europa League Round of 32 v Besiktas JK. I'm sure they'll give us a great challenge over the two legs in our first season in Europe since the 2012/13 season. With the transfer market opening on 01/01/16, I will look to make a few changes, clearing out some players who feel they are being under-utilised and looking to bring in some fresh faces to challenge the first team players and hopefully bring out a competitiveness within the team that can only help us grow more and more.

Hi guys,

haven't been on for a while, what with xmas holidays, then was in paris over the new year (fortunately before that shooting today) so havent even played fifa since my last update.

Have came to a decision though, that as much as i am loving my Real Valladolid game, i am going to give it up for the time being.

The reason for this is simple, I want to go my club, Glasgow Rangers. Seeing the off-field turmoil that they are embroiled in, the state of them and how the fans have been treated by the board really upsets me. They are shockingly bad just now and have just sold our star player, Lewis Macleod, to Brentford!

I am planning on starting a new Career mode with rangers, however, i will be moving Rangers and Celtic to England.

I will do a build up to this, where they get placed, and how i will be going forward tomorrow once i've started this.

Any thoughts/comments on this?

mate, that is what we are all worried about. To be fair to Newcastle, they always seem to have money available for new players and are in no trouble at all. but unless his interest in rangers can be bought out or be found to be illegal then I'm not sure what happens.

This is my reasons for my new career mode, a fresh start for the gers, in England trying to get their top club status back and get into the prem.

what do you think?

We only have the money to spend when we sell our big players, we only got Cabella, de Jong, Riviere etc because we made so much selling Cabaye and Debuchy. Sissoko is looking set to go too, we're in a vicious circle here, no scope to really aim any higher than PL stability so he can claim the tv money.

I think the CM will be good with Rangers in the English system, take out the current bottom two in the PL and put Rangers/Celtic in, should be a fun season.

looking at it that was, yeah its not the best, but at least if you're selling them you can replace. these new owners arent all they are cracked up to be.

as for putting them both in the premiership, i wont be doing that, for one, rangers are so bad they would be relegated straight away haha. i have made notes on my phone of a plan so will execute it tonight (missus' friend is coming round, cha ching!) and provide a report tomorrow or Friday!

The Swansea City Board let me handle whether to sell Tielsmans or not so obv I decided not to guess the bids were terrible and the counter offers weren't accepted or too late. Now he's happy so that's good. Ever since I bought Kovacic he took over CM and been playing amazing so Tielsmans on my 2nd line up as CM.

Teams been a little inconsistent and fans are a bit frustrated at me LOL. Biggest loss was Simone Scuffet as his loan expired and getting him back was trouble so I got Matthew Ryan and I will look to swap him + money in the winter transfer for Scuffet. Also finally I think I will have enough money to get out and sign some big names on either expiring contracts or transfer!

Statement from Glasgow Rangers FC;

We are pleased to announce that the takeover bid from Phoenix Suns owner, Robert Sarver, has been accepted and is now in complete control of RIFC. Additional funding from Dave King, Douglas Park, George Taylor and George Letham has seen them join the board under Mr Sarver. Walter Smith has re-joined the club as director of football and will advise the board on decisions for the club.

After gaining promotion to the SPL after an up and down season in the Scottish Championship, Mr Sarver had this to say about his vision for the club in an exclusive interview, ‘Rangers are a massive club. I didn’t fully realise this until I flew over from the States and seen the excellent facilities and passionate fan base surrounding the club.

Obviously living in the States, where I have other ventures, I won’t always be around to handle the day to day running of the club. Despite everything ultimately being “Ok’d” by myself, everything will go through my board, we only want the best for this club, but we will be smart about it.

After consulting a few ex professional players in America, I have realised that Scottish football might not be the place for Rangers to get to the status myself, and I’m sure the fans want us to be at. This is something I have been investigating in great detail and more shall be revealed in the coming days.

Moving forward, I am happy to announce our new manager as lifelong Rangers fan, Stewart Reynolds, he’ll be joined by his 2 assistant managers, Rangers legends Ally McCoist, making his return after a turbulent spell in charge, and Gennaro Gattuso, the former Rangers midfielder. Gennaro has never made a secret of his desire to return to Glasgow and we have given this opportunity to him which has grabbed with both hands. We are excited about our new management team and look forward to seeing the new style of football that Mr Reynolds has promised to bring to Ibrox.

I have employed 2 scouts for the club, however, Europe will be our limit for our network at the present time. Once I begin to see development, improvement and the club begin to make some money, then I shall look at widening the net as it were, and with that improving the transfer budget.

On that note, I have made money available for the club to invest in players they deem appropriate for the club. Once that is spent though, no more will be available until the end of the season, so it is imperative that Mr Reynolds and his staff spend wisely and strengthen the team properly. The last two episodes of my Granada Career Mode if anyone cares to check it out. Really enjoying this Career Mode, some nice technical players on the team but they're not the best and the Community Sliders definitely make it even more challenging.

Newcastle United 2015/16 Season: January 2016

20. (A) 4-0 win v Nott'm Forest (Montero 19', Dybala 40', Hernandez 79', 86')

Great start to 2016 for us as we attempt the unthinkable, challenging for the Premier League title, currently 2 points behind leaders Chelsea. First goal came from an Aubameyang cross in which Montero got on the end of by evading his marker and getting in front of him to tap in with ease. We struck again a few minutes before the break, Dybala stealing the ball about 40 yards out, took on the last defender who was left backpedalling and then had a 1 on 1 v de Vries in the Forest goal, curling around him and celebrating in front of the travelling Toon Army. Second half was a bit quiet for us, Forest pushed on in their usual gung-ho style, I decided to switch things up on the hour and give Dybala an early finish, bringing Hernandez on, who took just 16 minutes to make an impact, scoring with a first time shot on the edge of the box after a great cross-field pass from Montero. Hernandez got his second 7 minutes later, using his pace to exploit the tired defence and knock the ball past the keeper, leaving himself an empty net to tap in to before giving the fans his trademark acrobatic celebration.

21. (H) 1-0 win v QPR (Cisse 90+2')

A very important win here for us, mainly as it showed that we can scrape wins when needed, a vital trait needed to be champions. Not every game is a walk in the park and this certainly wasn't. QPR came out on the offensive right away, testing Krul with a few long range shots, but nothing too troubling. When we did get forward, we wasted so many chances, Dybala had a shocker for us in this one, missing 7 shots which he'd usually bury. I brought him off at 75 minutes to get him out of the pressure that was building on the team. I sent Cisse on instead of Hernandez, deciding to use Cisse's experience of grabbing late winners and hoping it would pay dividends. It did in injury time, as QPR failed to properly deal with a corner from Cabella, a scramble ensued in the box and Cisse lashed it in the back of the net in the midst of it all, running towards the bench to celebrate what could be a decisive 3 points in the title race.

(FAC R3 A) 2-0 win v Barnsley (Dybala 27', Aarons 49', Anita s/o 65')

We began our defence of the prestigious FA Cup against a buoyant Barnsley side who were currently flying high in the Championship. I rested everyone who started the QPR game except Dybala, whom I'd sent out to make a point today and get us into the next round. He responded in fine style, rising highest to head in from a Colback corner. We doubled up after the break when Dybala teed up Aarons, who unleashed a venomous volley into the top left corner. Some of these fringe players are making a push to be noticed and I won't be ignoring them at this rate. The only downer in this game was a rather harsh red card for Anita after a slightly mistimed tackle, nothing nasty, but the referee decided it was worthy of a red.

The draw for Round 4 of the FA Cup gave us an away tie against Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium.

16/01/16 - I received an email, offering me the opportunity to become England manager, which I accepted with great pride. What a day to receive such an honour, as we have the derby against Sunderland on this same day. With confidence booming, I set about making this day one of my proudest, alongside winning the FA Cup last season.

22. (A) 4-0 win v Sunderland (Aubameyang 11', Cabella 24', 89', Hernandez 84') (Abdellaoue missed pen 72')

The perfect day it would seem, even though we picked up a few injuries. Nothing is taking the shine off of this though. Aubameyang gave us the lead with a blazing counter after early Sunderland pressure, Cabella, Dybala and the Gabon international working together to create a goal from nothing to put us 1-0 up. Tiote picked up an injury in the build up of our goal, with the news afterwards saying he'll be out for 4 weeks with a severe ankle sprain. Our second goal had a touch of fortune about it, Cabella running from halfway, beating O'Shea, Cedric and Lustenberger, before seeing his shot go in via a deflection from van Aanholt, the deflection fooling Mannone completely. We thought it was 3-0 before half time when Dybala had a header off the crossbar and bounced down before being cleared, goal line technology showed it was just a whisker away from counting. The second half was back and forth without any real chances, aside from Montero having a goal chalked off for offside, just ran astray before Cabella made the pass to him. Sunderland had a chance to get back in the game via a penalty after Subotic brought down Johnson. Abdellaoue stepped up but missed, falling over as he took the penalty. Soon the game was put to bed as Hernandez headed into an empty net after Cabella forced a save from Mannone which rebounded to our striker. The fourth was sublime, Cabella launching a blast at goal, blocked by O'Shea right back at Cabella who volleyed from 25 yards, looping the ball over Mannone into the net, stunning the Stadium of Light into silence aside from the 1,500 Geordies in the upper North Stand who were going wild.

This win put us top of the league, albeit on goal difference, a +24 compared to Chelsea's +22. To go top of the Premier League after beating our local rivals and getting the England job on the same day, wow! What a day in my career!

23. (H) 2-1 loss v Stoke City (Montero 89', Ben Arfa missed pen 84') (Ireland 25', Shea 46')

Momentum was stopped dead in this game, we just didn't click at all. Former Magpie Stephen Ireland gave Stoke the lead with a low free kick that left Krul rooted. A disastrous start for us as Lascelles was sent off for us after a silly challenge on Jones, Jelavic slotted home the penalty to the right, beating Darlow easily. Our ten men seemed to be galvanised by the sending off and it showed when Cahill found himself in the box, controlling the ball well before shooting from 6 yards, a rare goal with his foot for the CB. Dybala gave us the lead after a lovely 1-2 pass with Davide Santon on the edge of the box, leading to a strike high into the net. We looked set to go through, but Anthony Pilkington crashed in a header at the death, giving Cardiff a reprieve as we go to a replay at St James' Park in a weeks time.

The draw for Round 5 of the FA Cup gives either ourselves or Cardiff a home tie against Arsenal.

Sissoko was replaced on deadline day, as we brought in highly sought after William Carvalho from Sporting Lisbon for £18,500,000.

It's official, Roberto Di Matteo is out, Mr. Manager is in.

It's the beginning of a new era for Schalke fans, as the new manager takes his helms with the moderately young squad of Schalke. Mr. Manager was quoted saying the following about his upcoming term as the manager:

"I realize that I don't have much familiarity with the German side of football, as I been more familiar with the style seen in the Premier League and La Liga, but that doesn't mean that I can't be successful here. "

"I really like the squad at this club, and I will try to implement my style of speed and quickness with stiff defense here at the club."

The manager went to comment on the younger players on the club:

"As for the squad and in terms of moves, I'll be looking at the squad very carefully in friendlies and from tape, and training and see which would benefit from a loan and such movements."

The manager further went onto comment on the his goal with the club:

"The biggest goal here at the club will be to obviously win Bundesliga, but climbing over Munich will be a giant hill to climb over. I think we have the talent here to build up and get over them, but it will take time."

"As for domestic cup(s) and Champions league we will obviously look to get as far as we can, depth and rest will be key."
