Rubin Kazan headed on the road in this one to face newly promoted FC Ufa. The cities of Kazan and Ufa have a long-standing rivalry in ice hockey, but the football feud is relatively new as Ufa was only formed in 2010. Rubin started the attack quickly in this one with a chance from Blagoy Georgiev in just the 2nd minute of play. In the 9th minute, Ufa's Pavlo Stepanets took down Gökdeniz Karadeniz in the box and a penalty was awarded. Marko Dević stepped up to take the chance and blasted a shot by goalkeeper David Yurchenko. A second goal would soon follow in the 14th minute when Dević sent in a cross that Carlos Eduardo volleyed home. Dević then got a shot on goal in the 17th minute that Yurchenko parried, but Carlos Eduardo was there to clean up the rebound. The amazing duo of Dević and Carlos Eduardo continued to click in the 2nd half as the Brazilian sent in a cross that the Ukrainian volleyed by Yurchenko in the 52nd minute. Dević would complete his hat trick in the 86th minute as Yurchenko took a bad angle on a Kamil Mullin through ball, and Dević found a wide open net. The final score of 5-0 will definitely give Kazan some bragging rights over Ufa.

Baldé 20'
Popov 90'
It was a battle of 1st place Rubin Kazan and 3rd place Kuban Krasnodar at Kazan Arena, and Rubin laid an egg losing 2-0. The game started slowly, but Kuban got on the board in the 20th minute when Charles Kaboré sent a through ball that Ibrahima Baldé made one touch on, then fired past Rubin goalkeeper Sergey Ryzhikov. Marko Dević came close to equalizing in the 28th minute, but the Ukrainian's header was just wide left of the target. In the 67th minute Kamil Mullin forced Kuban goalkeeper Alexandr Belenov to make a save, but Rubin's best chance came in the 86th minute when a Vladimir Dyadyun header was tipped over the crossbar by Belenov. Pushing everybody forward to try and tie the game, Rubin was caught on the counter by Kuban who got a decisive goal from Ivelin Popov in the 90th minute. It was a bitter defeat for Rubin who dropped from 1st to 5th with the loss.

Just like their previous encounter on Match Day 1, FC Krasnodar was unable to keep all 11 men on the pitch, and Rubin Kazan romped to another 4-0 victory in the Round of 16 of the Russian Cup. The first chance of the game came in the 3rd minute when Marko Dević headed a ball that went off the post. Rubin went ahead in the 10th minute when Magomed Ozdoev beat Krasnodar goalkeeper Andriy Dikan with a shot into the right corner. The game changed in the 34th minute as Andreas Granqvist took down Ozdoev in the box and was given a red card with a penalty awarded. Dević stepped up and cashed in the chance to double Rubin's lead. A third goal would come in the 82nd minute when Vladimir Sobolev sent a cross into the box that Kamil Mullin beautifully volleyed by a frozen Dikan. Krasnodar got another man sent off in the 87th minute when Pavel Mamaev made a rash challenge, and Rubin made them pay with one final goal from Gökdeniz Karadeniz in the 90th minute. Now The Tatars will advance to play CSKA Moskva in the Quarterfinals.

Kanunnikov 90'
Rubin Kazan manager Rinat Bilyaletdinov elected to play his B-Team again against newly promoted Arsenal Tula and this time it backfired as The Tatars were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw. Arsenal got on the board in the 32nd minute as Rubin defender Ruslan Kambolov attempted a pass to Mamuka Kobakhidze. Alexey Bazanov stepped in front of Kobakhidze to intercept the pass and fired a shot by a helpless Alexandr Filtsov. Rubin was still dominating the game, but the Kazan side's shooting accuracy was just a little off. Vladimir Sobolev had a header that hit the crossbar in the 53rd minute, and Marko Livaja found the post in the 56th minute. Then another defensive error gave Bazanov his brace in the 64th minute as Rubin seemed doomed. Some life was breathed into Rubin in the 78th minute when Maxim Kanunnikov headed home a Shota Bibilov corner. Then just before the whistle in the 90th minute, Kanunnikov dribbled into the box around two Arsenal defenders and fired the tying shot by goalkeeper Alexandr Filimonov. It was still not the result Rubin wanted, but at least Kanunnikov's heroics salvaged a point.

Manager's Thoughts
Well, that month didn't go exactly as planned. We had a great opening match against FC Ufa, destroying them 5-0. I thought we could carry that momentum into a big home match against Kuban Krasnodar, but our effort was flat as we lost 2-0. That loss dropped us from 1st in the table to 5th. I guess we just have FC Krasnodar's number as we beat them 4-0 for a second time and again they had men sent off. The most frustrating game was against last place Arsenal Tula. We had two defensive blunders that gave them their goals. Otherwise, we dominated the match. Luckily for us, Maxim Kanunnikov pulled off some heroics to get us a draw. Right now, we sit 3rd place in the table which would put us in the Europa League. Still, our season goal is to qualify for the Champions League.
More Injuries
In a game that he scored 2 goals, central attacking midfielder Carlos Eduardo picked up a sprained ankle against FC Ufa. That injury sidelined the in-form Brazilian for the rest of the month. Kamil Mullin also picked up a sprained ankle in the Russian Cup match against FC Krasnodar that he scored in. Like Carlos Eduardo, Mullin will be out for about 3 weeks.

October 2014 Fixtures
10/5 - vs Lokomotiv
10/18 - vs Torpedo
10/26 - at Spartak
This month we face three different Moscow sides. It will be a big month for us because Lokomotiv Moskva and Spartak Moskva are the two teams ahead of us in the RFPL table. Despite losing at home to Kuban Krasnodar, I expect to protect our home ground against Lokomotiv and Torpedo. As we travel to face Spartak, I would be satisfied with a draw. So in sum, we are gunning for 7 out of a possible 9 points.
