Thanks! Yes, the Kalou injury was a kick in the stomach. Fortunately we managed well without him and were able to left the cup double at the end of the season. He will be missed next season, too, but I may or may not have sold a starting striker and replaced him with someone big (since that is how the polls stand at the moment). I will probably leave the polls going for a day or so.

The reason behind Jarstein being the starter ahead of Kraft is simple: I prefer Jarstein over Kraft in-game. Both are capable of making great saves but both are also capable of letting some very easy goals in. As a whole I find Jarstein to be better and I also happen to prefer him in real life. Funnily enough, my real life preferences affect the squad selection at times.

      Episode #33: STOKE UN-BOGEYED

      <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ruATqAfKKpU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Dybala's early missed chances came back to haunt you with that late Colback winner. Good to bounce back with a win, especially against your bogey team. Carillo really should have buried that chance while Ceballos made good on his chance. Question for the next video, does Dybala's wastefulness in front of goal concern you? He's getting enough chances at the minute but in tighter games he might not have that luxury. Maybe he just needs to be more composed, which I'm sure will come in time.

It's gonna be interesting to see who comes in now. I suppose that's what happens when your a supporter! Bit of favoritism slips in! Speaking of Hertha IRL, I see that they are sitting third! Good bit off Bayern and Dortmund but I suppose third is what most teams in Germany aim for so it's good going and you must be pleased!

Oh yes, the team is doing an amazing job this season and being third is almost unbelievably good! Only a year ago we were third-bottom and fighting against relegation and now we are challenging for Champions League places. I really hope we manage to stay in the top four at the end of the season but I can't see it happening with games against Mönchengladbach, Schalke and Leverkusen still ahead and with the gap being only three points at the moment.

The work the coach Dardai has done is fantastic, though, especially with the signing of runs-up-and-down-and-gets-everything-done Vladimir Darida. The whole squad has been very good this season, e.g. Kalou has already netted 11 in the league while he managed to score only six last season. Additionally, the team will play their first cup semi final in 35 years in just a month and a half.

Re: How's Your FIFA Career Mode Going?

Alright--I'm going to a new approach to career mode. I'll be starting a thread and hope to not get burned out, but I really want to try to get 5+ years into a career.

I'm going to be using Leyton Orient. I will be playing 1 match, and simulating the next 4 games, no matter the competition, unless/until I get to the quarterfinals of any league competitions, or promotion playoffs, in which case I will modify as necessary.

I know next to nothing about League 2, but per wikipedia (LOL), Dagenham & Redbridge are a big rival to Orient, so I will play all fixtures vs them.

As I hopefully am promoted, I will be decreasing the amount of sim by 1, per level (i.e. league 1 = play 1, sim 3; Champ = play 1, sim 2; etc.). Again, my goal is to get 5+ seasons into this, and really build the club from the ground up, and my hopes are that by simulating such a significant amount, I will be able to get deep into this without getting burned out. I'll be creating a thread, and posting photos and some videos (I am currently learning how to use Share Factory--so bear with me).

I hope this garners some interest, as I've been running a page over at DN (see signature) that I really love, but there just isn't a lot of feedback over there, as opposed to having a thread here.

Well, on a certain level yes, you could say that. Leicester are doing a better job in their league, though, but on the other hand, they have been knocked out of the cups. Personally I'd say that Leicester are England's Hertha on steroids as far as league performances go :P

I can't even remember where I got to with them! I hope I started a new season because I've got a whole excel document I made yesterday that I'll be able to keep track of each player's stats with. It gets extensive like shots on/off target and pass accuracy so I might be able to drop in a couple of cool facts mid to end season to spice things up a little! I'm gunna go full Theo Walcott on Conor Compton and give him a run up front in a couple of cup games I reckon too. I've been thinking about my tactics as well so there might be a post intoducing my save to the newcomers and detailing some changes I'll be making.

                        Newport County A.F.C.

                        '16-'17 July/August Update

Looking to leave the bitter taste of last season behind, Giovanni Marccelino looks forward to a new season with his squad in a new role. After being an afterthought a season ago at a time when not much was expected of them, the Exiles enter this season as legitimate contenders to achieve promotion to League One and perhaps even a League Two title. They will also be looking to at least repeat their performance in the F.A. Cup and improve on their first round exits in the Capital One Cup and J. Paint Trophy. They will look to achieve their goals with a very limited budget (€900K for transfers, €4,250 for wages), so Marccelino and the board had to get creative in the summer transfer window.

                        TRANSFERS

OUT: Joe Green (GK, 52 OVR), signed a two-year loan to join York City. Taylor Nelson (LW, 57 OVR), signed a two-year loan to join Crewe Alexandra. Matt Partridge (CB, 58 OVR), sold to Crewe Alexandra for €160K. Scott Boden (ST, 59 OVR), sold to Barnet for €200K. Joe Day (GK, 63 OVR), sold to Gillingham for €400K.

IN: Juan Komar (CB, 65 OVR), purchased from Boca Juniors for €600K. Emiliano Martinez (GK, 67 OVR), purchased from Arsenal for €725. Jerome Binnom-Williams (LB, 67 OVR), purchased from Crystal Palace for €700K.

                        The Roster

                        Spoiler

                        Starting XI (4-4-2 Diamond Wide)

                        Martinez

                        Twunasi/Komar/Taylor/Binnom-Williams

                        Gardner

                        Burke ------------------ Elito

                        Byrne

                        Arteaga-------McKay

                        ___________________________________

In preseason, we accepted to join the Invitational Cup and were paired in the same group with League Two sides Yeovil Town and Fleetwood town as well as League One's Port Vale.

Invitational Cup - Group Game 1
Newport County - Yeovil Town (2-0)
                        Byrne 24' (Gardner)
                        McKay (Byrne) 58'

The Exiles get off to a great start in the preseason tournament, looking sharp on the pitch on both offense and defense. Yeovil Town was only able to take 3 shots all game, none of them on goal.

Invitational Cup - Group Game 2
Fleetwood Town - Newport County (1-2)
                        Wright 17'
                        Burke 22' (Byrne)
                        McKay 62' (Gardner)

Another excellent showing by the Exiles, with a repeat performance on offense: 2 goals on 8 shots (5 on goal). The game started with a minor hiccup inside 20 minutes on what would be the only shot Fleetwood would take all game but Newport quickly responded with a goal from Burke, who did not score at all for the club last season. A very good sign if nothing else. For his part, McKay is getting off to the kind of start many analysts are expecting from him after taking League Two by storm in the second half of last season.

Invitational Cup - Group Game 3
Newport County - Port Vale (3-0)
                        Elito 13' (Byrne)
                        Bergin 71' (OG)
                        Giles 90+' (Burke)

Woah, this squad is looking sharp! The Exiles left no doubt they're in great form by quickly disposing of their League One opponents and go into the semi-finals on an early winning streak.

                        Invitational Cup - Semi-Final
                        Newport County - S****horpe Utd (2-1)
                        Williams 50'
                        Byrne 71' (Twunasi)
                        McKay 90+'

Undoubtedly their toughest game of the pre-season up to this point, the Exiles pulled off a thrilling victory in the final moments of regulation when McKay stole the ball from a defender and ran it back into the box before firing an unstoppable shot to put Newport through. It was anyone's game really.

                        Invitational Cup - Final
                        Colchester - Newport County (2-0)
                        Arteaga 29' (Byrne)
                        McKay 89' (Elito)

Arteaga's score in the first third of the game proved key as the Exiles were able to dominate possession thereafter (55%) then add the final dagger with another late McKay goal, this one on a counter attack that sealed the cup for Marccelino's squad and earned them an additional €2 million for their transfer budget.

                        ___________________________________

                        League Match 1
AFC Wimbledon - Newport County (0-1)
                        Byrne 42' (Arteaga)

The Exiles knew it would be a tough opener not just on the road but against a gritty Wimbledon squad and that's exactly how the game played out. Luckily for them Arteaga and Byrne were able to hook up successfully and the defense took care of the rest.

Capital One Cup - Round 1
Notts County - Newport County (0-1)
                        Burke 52' (Gardner)

The Exiles succeed in getting off to a good start in the COC thanks to a goal from Burke off a corner kick from Gardner. It was a very even game as the teams split possession while they both took 6 shots. Nevertheless, it could had easily been a 3-0 game as Gardner had a penalty kick saved and McKay strangely missed an easy shot inside the small box.

                        League Match 2
Newport County - Swindon Town (0-0)

Not the home opener Marccelino had in mind. The Exiles failed to establish possession (46%) or create many scoring chances. A valuable point all things considered, and the fans brought the energy throughout the game, but the performance did not meet the expectations.

                        League Match 3
                        Northampton - Newport County (1-2)
                        Hughes 37' (Giles)
                        Adams 73' (pen)
                        Elito 76' (McKay

Here's a fact that went under the radar at the end of last season: Northampton reached out to Marccelino about becoming their HC. Obviously the Italian passed on the offer and on this game he confirmed why The Cobblers wanted him, beating them with a mix of starters and bench players with a rematch from pre-season looming in a few days in the COC.

Capital One Cup - Round 2
                        S****horpe Utd - Newport County (0-2)
                        Giles 92' (McKay)
                        Arteaga 105' (pen)

S****horpe were The Exiles' toughest opponent in pre-season and they gave Newport hell once again, taking an exciting back-and-forth game into ET where Marccelino's squad would finally break through. Assuming Newport achieves promotion and S****horpe remains in League One, the media is already looking forward to those two games next season.

                        League Match 4
Newport County - Burton Albion (2-2)
                        Burke 45+' (Gardner)
                        Arteaga 64' (Burke)

                        Joachim 85'
                        Charles 90+'

Sources indicate Marccelino was furious with his squad in the locker room after this game. An errant pass from Danny Holmes in the back line in the 85th minute led to the visitors first score, which led to a stressful 5+ minutes for the Exiles trying to hold off an opponent that suddenly had life. Newport's worst fears would become reality in the last play of the game as Charles would score off a corner kick heading the ball backwards towards the goal on a move that was timed perfectly with an unfortunate decision by Martinez to leave the small box in an attempt to clear the cross. The final stats suggest this was a game as close as the final scored indicates but the reality is that it wasn't, and Marccelino's squad lost two points it hopes it won't cry for at the end of the season.

                        Spoiler

Review: The outstanding start to the pre-season hasn't yet translated to the regular season, at least in league play, but it's still too early to panic. You have to believe this team is primed to achieve promotion this season and anything but will just be a massive disappointment. I'm ready to deal with that kind of pressure. Also loving the good start in the COC even if we had to sweat a bit in those games - hey, that's what cup games are supposed to be like.

Let's talk about transfers. I'm really stoked about all 3 new faces brought in as they each have very good potential for a League Two club. Komar first, we needed a very good CB to solidify the position and he does just that. Taylor is still serviceable and that will allow for Moore to be developed and not rushed into the starting lineup just yet. We also needed to address at least one side of the fullbacks and Binnom-Williams just fits that need perfectly. He has solid stamina but we'll work on improving that as well and Holmes becomes a better option off the bench than Barrow. Finally Martinez - his acquisition and the subsequent sale of Joe Day weren't done until late in the transfer window as it took a while to get a deal done with Arsenal. While Day had just had an outstanding season for us, we were going to end up moving on from at some point and what better time than while his value is high. On the other hand, Martinez is a bit younger, higher rated, and has higher potential that if reached would make him a solid BPL starter. It's an excellent deal even if I'm biased saying so. Thereafter, the loan deals for Green and Nelson were no-brainers as were the sales of Partridge and Boden.

There were also a lot of deals that didn't materialize. Some of you may have noticed academy-product Patrick Miller has been promoted to the senior squad. This happened after the Boden sale at which point we recalled Collins from his loan. We then received a purchase offer for Collins from Barnet which we accepted and in anticipation of that deal getting done promoted Miller. Alas, Barnet offered a minimal raise in wages to Collins which he refused so now both him and Miller are on our bench and we'll look to find ways to get them playing time, most likely with the B squad. Hughes, who is well-informed that he's rated as our 4th best CB, refused deals from Barnet and Shrewsbury Town, the later which nearly doubled his wages. Weird.

But while one of the Miller's is no longer in the academy another one remains, and he and his teammates from last season have been joined by new prospects so let's check out the youth squad:

                        - Clark Gordon (CM, 62 OVR, 82-94 POT: Is this 16-year old from Scotland the club's new top prospect? It's still too early to tell but the board was thrilled to find a prospect that could be a future replacement for Byrne.
                        - Bondz Moore (LW, 62 OVR, 81-87): Our top remaining prospect after one season, Moore has higher upside than Jack Giles who seems to be building up on a very good second half of last season. He's also grown to 5'7", 147lbs) now that he turned 17 and the Englishman will undoubtedly join the senior squad at some point this season.
                        - Konsta Salo (CAM, 63 OVR, 78-94): Kimmo Rasanen might have struck gold in his homeland of Finland with this 17-year old described by our scouts as technically gifted. He possess rare ball control for a teenager to go with impressive agility and acceleration and he may be on the fast track to a promotion, although his stamina leaves a lot to be desire and as a result he would probably be better suited coming off the bench. Someone to watch for no doubt.
                        - Ben Potter (LM, 58 OVR, 78-84): We're hopeful that the 16-year old from England will grow from his 5'2", 139lbs frame in the same way Moore did. For his age, he possess excellent speed that will be an asset once he receives the big call.
                        - Cristiano Dall'Oglio (CDM, 54 OVR, 77-83): This 16-year old defensive-minded midfielder from Italy will eventually make Klukowski expendable as our backup CDM, and that's motivation enough to continue to work hard in the academy for an eventual promotion.
                        - Gary Woods (CM, 50 OVR, 73-93: This 17-year old is another Scottish gem. Left-footed and technically gifted, he stands at 6'0" and 174lbs. He needs to hit the ground running in the academy but he's another exciting prospect.
                        - Mark Miller (RM, 51 OVR, 74-80): The older Miller brother is a 17-year old Irishman standing at 6-feet tall and 181lbs. He brings a lot of physicality but is still rough around the edges (although very agile) and needs to work hard in the academy.
                        - David Fox (RM, 53 OVR, 69-89): The youngest member of the youth squad is this 15-year old form Scotland standing at 5 feet tall and 125lbs. Crazy agile, our scouts are very intrigued by how much progress he can show if he commits for a couple of years in our academy.
                        - Patrick Brennan (LW, 45 OVR, 71-83): This Irish prospect recently turned 16 years old and has grown to 5'2", 150lbs. Adeyemi saw enough flashes from him to highly recommend him and we hope to be able to help improve his game since he's still very young.
                        - Marc Fox (CAM, 50 OVR, 64-80): This 17-year old from Scotland is described by scouts as a playmaker. He may be a late bloomer but we look forward to grooming him.

                              The Bluebirds

                              September 2016

                              September 10, Emirates Stadium
                              Barclays PL: Match 5

                              Arsenal 1-0 Cardiff City
                              72' Welbeck

                              MotM: Rubén Blanco (CAR)

To open an extremely tough month we had to visit the Emirates and face a quality Arsenal side. Cech proved again what a top signing he was, denying Amartey with probably our best chance of the game. Welbeck then decided the game, tapping in the rebound after Blanco made a flurry of impressive saves to keep out the London attackers.

                              September 15, Stadio Olympico
                              EL Group Stage: Match 1

                              Lazio 1-0 Cardiff City
                              23' Djordjevic

                              MotM: Stefan Radu (LAZ)

A few changes were made to the side for fitness reasons and to give game time to players. Lazio dominated the ball as you would expect, with them being of a higher quality and at home. Djordjevic was a constant threat in the box throughout the game and especially in the first half when he got his goal. He got in front of Morrison to head a cross powerfully past Blanco. Whittingham had our best chance, rasping the crossbar with a long range effort, Marchetti was well beaten. The other game, Celtic vs Rosenberg, finished 1-1 so we are by no means out of it.

                              September 18, Cardiff City Stadium
                              Barclays PL: Match 6

                              Cardiff City 0-0 Chelsea

                              MotM: Rubén Blanco (CAR)

Chelsea are struggling this season after back to back titles. It was mainly a midfield battle and we saw the best chance of the game fall to Whittingham who came off the bench. The midfielder struck a ferocious shot but Begovic was equal to it. Manga had the only other real chance of note, heading over from a first half corner.

Sam Vokes will miss 4 weeks with a sprained ankle picked up early against Chelsea.

                              September 24, Goodison Park
                              Barclays PL: Match 7

                              Everton 1-3 Cardiff City
                              11' Afobe, 41' 77' Whittingham
                              36' Deulofeu

                              MotM: Peter Whittingham (CAR)

Whittingham showed that he can still cut it at this level with a brace and providing the assist for the third. Benik Afobe showcased his pace and then composure to curl past Joel Robles after 11 minutes. Spaniard Deulofeu pulled one back with a rebound after Blanco made a terrific point black stop on Barkley. Whittingham got the first of his two just before the break, slotting one in off the post. The best was saved for last. Afobe flicked on Blanco's goal kick to Whittingham, who spun around Stones and feinted past Coleman to get free of the defence. The captain then struck a shot from the edge of the box to seal the game.

                              September 29, Celtic Park
                              EL Group Stage: Match 2

                              Celtic 2-1 Cardiff City
                              31' Brown, 38' Lustig
                              65' (Pen) Whittingham

                              MotM: Craig Gordon (CEL)

A disappointing result after we had a promising start. Afobe nearly broke the deadlock but his header was scrambled off the line by Gordon. Celtic captain Scott Brown put his team in front with a well taken goal and then Lustig out jumped both Bruma and Fabio at the back post to make it two-nil. Whittingham pulled one back from the spot after Chalobah was hauled down but we were unable to find an equalizer.

The month got off to a slow start with back to back losses. They both came against strong sides so I suppose that's a small consolation. We stabilized ourselves with a credible draw at home to Chelsea before beating Everton convincingly away. Our second Europa League game ended the same as the first, but we were unlucky not to leave with at least a point. Whittingham finished the month strongly with three goals on two games, proving that he can still play at the highest level.

                              Thanks for Reading!
