MotM: Josip Ilicic

Ilicic headed in a rebound from Sissoko's shot on 16 minutes to give Newcastle the lead. Cabella then smashed a penalty off the crossbar followed by the post and then Fabianski's head in a comical incident. Krul was forced into a save by Anderson and Shelvey hit the woodwork to end the half. Ilicic got a second drifting in between Koulibaly and Zouma to get on the end of Chadli's ball in behind before finishing with his first touch. Gouffran was left completely unmarked to head in a Cabella free kick on 83 minutes ending the game in humiliating fashion for the Swans.

MotM: Lucas

Knowing that a draw would be enough to seal his team's spot at the top of the group Hayes made sure his side was set up to keep a clean sheet. He also wanted to get at least a point following the horrific defeat to Newcastle earlier in the week. That unravelled quickly when Witsel headed a cross from Lucas narrowly in after climbing above Reid. Matuidi then added a second 3 minutes later getting the ball on the edge of the area where Reid and Amat gave him way too much room to pick his spot and finish. A long range effort on halftime from Lavezzi all but sealed the game for Swansea. Lucas cut inside to make it 4 for PSG smashing past Scuffet at his near post. Ings somehow managed to hit the crossbar with a rebound from his first shot that was saved by Sirigu. It pretty much summed up our dismal form in front of goal. Bony eventually got one in the net for us with the last kick of the game. He sped past Luiz and placed it around Sirigu. The game was more balanced in terms of shots than the scoreline suggested. We just couldn't hit the net much like the last game against Newcastle. In a dramatic turn of events Anderlecht earned their first point of the group stage against heavily fancied Dortmund managing a 1-1 draw in Germany. This draw meant even though we were hammered by PSG we progressed to the Last 16 finishing 2nd of goal difference to PSG themselves. It was announced that Bayern Munich are our opponents. We earned a massive £10 million for qualifying doubling our transfer budget going into the January window.

Hernandez 57'

MotM: Igor Akinfeev

A close range 57' header from the Mexican Hernandez was enough to take all 3 points for the visitors. The first half was all United. Di Maria and Hernandez both missed glorious, early chances before Hernandez forced a wonderful save from Simone Scuffet. The resulting corner fell to Rooney on the edge of the area and Scuffet did enough to tip his shot onto the post. The decisive moment came in the 57th minute. The Argentine Di Maria broke through the defence on the left hand side of the box and holding off the challenges of Amat and Reid he chipped the ball across to Hernandez. He out jumped Bernat in the air and headed comfortably past the Italian Scuffet. A late resurgence produced little more than a wasted opportunity by Berahino and a good save by Akinfeev denying Cañas. Going to the Eithad in 3 days we need to get firing up front.

MotM: Edinson Cavani

Facing both Manchester clubs in the space of 4 days is never nice but that's what we had to deal with this month. A 4-2-3-1 was trialed as a result of our recent troubles in creating and converting chances. It was City who created all the chances and the leagues top scorer, Edinson Cavani, was there to finish them off. On the back of his hat trick City marched to an easy victory. Wilfried Bony and Sigurdsson both missed clear cut chances early on and that is an example of where we are at the moment. Cavani scored his first with a header in off the underside of the crossbar just after the hour mark. His second displayed his quick feet when he turned inside Amat and slotted past Scuffet before he had even dived. Stambouli blazed a shot wide and then Cavani put the icing on the cake for the Citizens when he followed up the rebound to his own shot off the crossbar. He managed to get there ahead of Clyne to poke it in. Things don't look to be getting any better.

MotM: Jack Wilshere

Another dreadful defeat. This time at the hands of Arsenal. Campbell, Sanogo and Sanchez all had chances before Sanogo eventually put the ball into the net after hitting the crossbar with a header 2 minutes before hand. Wilshere played it into him and he put it into the top right corner to start the scoring. After Hayes went all out attack to try and get an equalizer Arsenal came up with 2 more goals in the last minutes. First it was Wilshere driving through the defence before finishing with his left foot. Then it was Ox-JoChamberlain being found by Giroud and curling around Scuffet. This is our 5th consecutive defeat in all competitions and we have only managed 1 goal while conceding a worrying 14. What suddenly has gone wrong? Hayes must be wondering that very question.

MotM: Stefan Johansen

A dreadful way to end a dreadful month where we didn't win a single game. The defence allowed 2 goals inside the first 20 minutes and that's what killed us. Vako had his shot blocked by Amat but it rolled to the left and into Yacob's path. All he had to do was pass it into the net as Scuffet wasn't set. 3 minutes later Mulumbu got on the score sheet. Vako chipped it over Reid and Mulumbu controlled it on his chest before firing low past Scuffet. Bony missed a bicycle kick before coming out in the second half and getting a goal. (Our 2nd this month) He danced inside Zambrano and avoided Dawson's challenge inside the box before slotting home. We pushed for the equalizer with chances from Reid and 2 from Bony. Our terrible luck in front of the posts continued however and we slumped to a 6th defeat in a row. Hayes can all but hope that this form doesn't continue next month.

EXE – Appiah (22’)

These League One rivals battle it out and Exeter City once again are into the lead against Sheffield United. Feudjou collects the ball on the half-way line and sprints to the left wing where he picks out a great through ball between two defenders to allow Appiah to run onto it and be one-on-one with the keeper. He nudges the ball to the right before hitting the ball past the outstretched leg of the keeper and across the line.

SHE – Driussi (24’)

As soon as Exeter score, Sheffield United reply as Florent Cuvelier lifts the ball over the defence and to Sebastian Driussi who is initially tackled by Amari’i Bell but the ball is collected by Stefan Scougall on the right who whips the ball into the near post so Driussi can get a tiny touch on the ball to put it past Sylvian Gbohouo.

EXE – Appiah (29’)

Sheffield goalkeeper, George Long, gets the ball in his box and he takes an dreadful touch allowing Kwabena Appiah to slide in and poke the ball past the keeper and into the net. The look on the keeper’s face is grim now...

EXE – Appiah (34’)

Appiah is just too difficult to handle for the Sheffield defence as right-back Craig Alcock is forced into passing backwards after relentless pressure by Diego Poyet. The pass goes to Harrison McGahey and he’s quickly tackled by Appiah who is now through on goal. All he has to do for his first-half hat-trick is to flick the ball around the keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

SHE – Degirolamo (RED) (42’)

It’s getting even worse for the home side as Feudjou passes back to the half-way line for Diego Poyet. He takes one touch before Diego Degirolamo slides in from behind with his studs up and he gets a straight red.

SHE – PEN (45’+ 1’)

Aaron Dean gives the ball away poorly on the left wing for Jamie Murphy to collect the ball. He sprints into the box where Inniss meets him with a lousy outstretched leg that only gets the man and not the ball. The penalty is taken by Jamie Murphy who smacks the crossbar and the rebound is cleared away and met then by the half-time whistle.

EXE – Baudry (OG) (71’)

The ball is given to the left where Reece Brown has a venomous shot which is saved by the keeper’s shins and it falls into a group of three defenders and Kwabena Appiah. Appiah and Mathieu Baudry get a touch on the ball at the same time which makes it bounce down towards the keeper. Baudry tries desperately to clear the ball but he slices it which makes it spin and bounce and because of the spin it rolls towards the goal and eventually crosses over the line.

CRY – Puncheon (8’)

Yannick Bolasie flicks the ball over to the back post where Jason Puncheon is allowed to take a touch and place the ball low into the bottom corner.

EXE – Konate (PEN) (23’)

Diego Poyet spots a lovely ball through the defence for Konate who attempts to cut in but is tackled. Cowan-Hall collects it and bombs into the box until Joel Ward purposely slides in to deny Cowan-Hall from crossing into the box. It’s a penalty and Ward gets a yellow. Inters Konate takes the penalty and places it into the top right corner of the net.

EXE – Konate (45’)

Julián Speroni gets the ball from his defence and he’s immediately pressed by Inters Konate. Speroni tries to clear but Konate blocks it and it goes into the net.

EXE – Appiah (13’)

Christian Ribeiro makes a great overlapping run on the right and receives the ball. He crosses into the middle where the unmarked Kwabena Appiah can easily head the ball past the keeper to make the net bulge.

EXE – Konate (45’+ 1’)

López Ruano boots the ball up field and somehow it falls onto the run of Appiah who has no defenders to compete with. He bombs down the left and crosses into Konate but the cross is way too powerful and it flies past Konate and to the other wing where Cowan-Hall manages to control it. He delivers a sublime ball into the box with the outside of his foot to the back post where Konate rises above his marker to head into the lower right corner.

EXE – Ribeiro (10’)

Allassani goes on a mazey run down the left. He cuts into the penalty area, skips past a defender and then has a shot which is blocked. The ball goes to Poyet outside the box who picks a long pass to the right for Ribeiro who skips into the inside and sprints into the box where he shoots across the keeper and the ball clips the post before going in.

EXE – Appiah (15’)

Two goals in quick succession as Cowan-Hall takes a corner from the left which is whipped into the near post for Appiah who climbs above his marker to head the ball over the keeper and into the far corner.

MIL – Upson (49’)

Ed Upson takes a free-kick from around twenty-eight yards out and slightly to the right. He whips it over the jumping wall and into the top right corner.

MIL – PEN (71’)

Lee Gregory gets the ball in the left of the area. Inniss misses his first tackle and then sticks his foot out again to trip the man over and it’s a penalty. Lee Martin takes the penalty and he hits it slightly to the right. Glen Mabil guesses the right way and gets a strong right hand to it and he parries it onto the wing where it’s cleared to safety.

AST – Weimann (8’)

Andreas Weimann chests the ball down in the penalty area after a cross in from Jack Grealish and it allows him to poke it in the net. Bad defending, it was like all the defenders had no strength at all.

EXE – Konate (21’)

Exeter get a free-kick around twenty-seven yards out and Konate takes it. His effort sees the ball smack against the crossbar and the ball is cleared to Allassani on the left who delivers a lovely ball into the back post where heads the ball downwards. The bounce it takes fools the keeper and the ball sneaks into the far left corner.

EXE – Appiah (35’)

Reece Brown picks out Appiah who can go on a run into the penalty area and shoot. Appiah’s shot should really be saved by Guzan but instead goes past him for a goal to Exeter City.

AST – Sylla (37’)

Fabian Delph’s marker, Reece Brown falls over for no apparent reason, allowing the unmarked man to waltz to the right wing and cross the ball into the box for Yacouba Sylla to get his head on it.

AST – Sio (73’)

Sanchez delivers a pacey ball into the back post where Giovanni Sio can tap the ball into the goal.

CHA – Vetokele (33’)

A crucial game in the season for Exeter so that they can be level on points with Leicester City but is starts badly as Berg Gudmundsson collects the ball on the left and he crosses it into the back past where Igor Vetokele heads the ball over the keeper and into the opposite corner.

EXE – Moussa (OG) (45’+ 1’)

Feudjou skips over a challenge in the midfield and he tries to poke the ball into Appiah. The ball rebounds off of Charlton defender, Andre Bikey. The ball rolls to Diego Poyet who’s around twenty-four yards out and he pelts the ball towards goal. It takes a big deflection off of Franck Moussa and it wrong foots the keeper. It smacks the underside of the crossbar and goes in.

CHA – Vetokele (65’)

Gudmundsson gets the ball on the right and this time he delivers a low cross into the box for Vetokele to slot it into the corner of the net.

Wow. What a painful month for you. Do you know why this happened? Was it one of those months where the AI gets everything right? Or was it just bad form? Or something else?

One of those months that is couldn't score for the life of me. Shots that would have normally gone in didn't. The AI got most things right as well like slide tackles being perfect around the box. I'm gonna try switching up formations, which I'll post later, and see what happens.

Keano I would go with the 4-3-3 you posted. I use it with my B team and it's awesome. The only way I can make it work though is by taking the RCM and LCM 12 clicks back to convert them into RDM and LDM. If I keep them in their default position, they push too far forward and I am vulnerable to counters. I can't help with the player instructions because I've never used the players you have :/

I've been trying different variations of 4-3-3. Most recently with 1 CDM and 2 CMs. It worked fairly well. With the players I have I feel I can easily switch between a 2 CDM 4-3-3 and a single CDM 4-3-3.

I'd go with the 4-4-2 Diamond wide keano it suits your team better than the 4-3-3 would.

Like Tex said that would keep Delph off the field as I feel Stambouli is a better defensive CDM. Thanks for the idea though and if I ever need to change it up I think I could make it work.

Keano: I'm a big fan of the 4-2-3-1, but I was tempted to say 4-4-2 since I feel like Ings can do a lot for you in the lineup. But, that one keeps Delph off the field who is a great presence in the midfield.

I think I'm going to use a 4-2-3-1 for the First XI and then a 4-3-3 for the B Team. Ings I think could be a great impact player to come off the bench late on in games with his pace. I'm trying to sell Emnes on in January as I have no need for him anymore. Berahino and McKenzie (Who is only a 63 Ovr CF always seems to score when he plays, 4 goals in one game and 2 in another.) battle it out for the starting striker on the B Team.

I've also lined up a replacement for Montero or Dyer on a Bosman signing and also a new defensive CDM to add quality depth also on a Bosman. Any other areas you guys think I need to strengthen?

So nothing is set in stone, but I am heavily debating bringing back Deportivo to go side by side with St. Pauli updates. I know this was the favorite of mine for a lot of you guys. It is interesting since I tend to bring teams from lower leagues, but they are in La Liga already. However, they would be a massive challenge. They have a ENORMOUS transfer budget of 420K, and 8 players in on loan. 5 of their staring XI are loaned players.

What do you guys think?

It is interesting since I tend to bring teams from lower leagues, but they are in La Liga already. However, they would be a massive challenge. I wasn't here when you did Deportivo so I'd definitely be up for seeing them! And looking at that budget and loanees, it'll be a challenge which is always good to read!

Do it! Do it! Do it! Bring back the good ol' Depor and take them back to the top where they were about fifteen years ago. Make this an annual thing, like Jamie's Liverpool and Newcastle careers and my Hertha career. It would be a huuuge challenge but it would be very rewarding. Also, you have a special connection with Deportivo.

Keano: I use the 4-3-3 with 1 CDM and 2 CMs with my first team. The way I do it, is one defensive midfielder (CDM) one box-to-box (RCM) and an attacking midfielder, preferably a CAM (LCM). The LCM has the instruction to get forward and sometimes free roam. Give it a try. The 4-2-3-1 is a good idea though. For some reason I've always had trouble making the 4-2-3-1 work the way I've wanted it to, but that was before player instructions. Between the 4-2-3-1 and the 4-3-3 Attack (CAM) I always go with the 4-3-3.

Yes they eliminated me from the cup, but you're connected to them, they signed Omar Bravo from Guadalajara after the 2006 World Cup, and they also took Andres Guardado to Europe even though they took years to pay the transfer fee.
