Dagenham '18-19 Season
April Update
F.A. Cup - Quarter Finals, REPLAY
Chelsea - Dagenham (3-0)
Demir 11'
Oscae 27'
Demir 62'
Recap: Both teams saved their first squads for their game against each other the very next day in Champions League action, so this game simply confirmed that Chelsea's depth (the Starting XI they put out wouldn't finish in relegation) is far superior than Dagenham's. The Daggers' youngsters tried their best but were clearly outmatched and Paez's squad ends up bowing out of both local cups at the same stage.
Champions League - Quarter Finals, 1st Leg
Chelsea - Dagenham (0-3)
Locadia 51' (Victor Andrade)
Locadia 56' (Landa)
Kim 65'
Recap: Looky here looky here, how quickly things change. After a tightly-contested first half it were the Daggers who earned a 3-0 victory in this one thanks to timely and clutch goals from Jurgen Locadia followed by this hard-earned goal from Kim

League Match 29
Southampton - Dagenham (1-2)
Caseres 23' (P)
Caseres 28' (P)
Austin 66'
Recap: The B squad was called upon once again for this one and even though they have struggled as of late to score they pull of this road win thanks to a pair of perfectly executed PK's by Caseres (one to his left, one to his right). Considered a double victory since the A squad was able to rest for the next game vs Chelsea.
Champions League - Quarter Finals, 2nd Leg
Dagenham - Chelsea (1-3, 4-3 agg)
Van Aanholt 37'
Locadia 47' (Kim)
Demir 60'
Mikel 77'
Recap: The Daggers are creating a horrible habit of flirting with elimination (they were also on the bring of it against Porto) but they manage to eliminate the Blues after a wacky game. Van Aanholt got the scoring started with a perfect shot from 35 yards out off a deflection but Dagenham was able to keep the game in control for the rest of the first half. Then at the beginning of the second half Kim and Locadia got together for this:

And just when you thought that all but sealed the deal Demir put Chelsea back on the board by sifting through the Daggers' defense, then with about 15 minutes left to play Mikel also scored for Chelsea after a serious of reflections. Suddenly Chelsea needed just one more goal to advance on away goals; but Dagenham had been doing an outstanding job of keeping possession, and they made an even bigger effort during the final moments of the game ending with 63% possession and completing an astonishing upset.
League Match 30
Dagenham - Aston Villa (4-0)
Locadia 3' (Reyna)
Locadia 15' (Kim)
Vilna 23' (Locadia)
Klok 78' (Jones)
Recap: Dagenham is officially on fire and their form is coinciding with Jurgen Locadia playing his best soccer this season. The Daggers had been hard to figure out for most of the season but if Locadia can keep up form to complement what Victor Andrade has been doing this season then this team could really pull off a few surprises.
League Match 31
Arsenal - Dagenham (1-2)
Locadia 41'
Kondogbia 64'
Wilkinson 67' (Toral)
Recap: Going into this game the Gunners and Daggers sat in 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the standings but thanks to their ability to carry on with their winning streak Dagenham jumps ahead of Arsenal. It was a game as tense as the score indicates, with Locadia putting the visitors ahead before the half and Kondogbia finally equalizing the game for the Gunners who had been letting it all out in their attempt to equalize the game. But shortly after, a corner kick from Toral found the Daggers' captain on a header in the box that hit a side post before going in, leaving Arsenal's goalkeeper hopeless and going on to become the difference-making goal.
Champions League - Semi Finals, 1st Leg
Dagenham - Real Madrid (4-1)
Sarr 10' (Vilna)
Reyna 30' (Victor Andrade)
Vilna 45' (Jones)
Locadia 63' (Jones)
Cristiano Ronaldo 89'
Recap: If you needed any confirmation that Dagenham is EN FUEGO this should do it for ya. A game many thought would mark the beginning of the end for the Daggers' Cinderella-ish run in this competition turned into a festival for the hosts who slowly but surely jumped out to a 4-goal lead before CR7 scored what may prove out to be a very important away goal for the Merengues. Dagenham has previously jumped out to early leads vs Porto (4-2) and Chelsea (3-0) before ending up advancing by the smallest of margins (6-5 and 4-3 respectively) in games where they prayed for the final whistle to come. Will they be able to calmly put away Ancelotti's team in Spain or will they once again flirt with (and perhaps succumb to) elimination?
League Match 32
Dagenham - Newcastle (3-0)
Locadia 25' (Victor Andrade)
Victor Andrade 29' (Locadia)
Reyna 85' (Kim)
Recap: An excellent win to continue a very hot streak actually became somewhat of a somber day for the Daggers as LCB Marian Sarr suffered a broken ankle about 20 minutes into the game that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Sarr and Wilkinson have been an integral part of Dagenham's hot streak and it'll be interested to see whether Paez's squad can go on without missing a beat.

The same team that was severely outplayed/swept by not just Fulham but also Sunderland is now just 7 points away from becoming the league leader. Amazing, isn't? What's even better? DAGENHAM AT CHELSEA IS THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON, so if the Daggers are able to keep the pressure on and Chelsea misses out on some points we could be looking at a league-final type of game in late May. Dagenham would need to be at least within 2 points of Chelsea though as the Blues have a far superior goal differential (+39 to +22). Still, the fact that Dagenham is this close to a possible league title after the up and down season they have had is quite an accomplishment. That's without mentioning their amazing run in the Champions League where after putting away Chelsea they shocked the world with a convincing 4-1 victory and will go for a trip to the final in their first game of May (Atletico Madrid and Barca are battling on the other side). So Dagenham is alive for an European double while Chelsea is aiming for a domestic treble (they won the Capital One Cup and face Tottenham in the F.A. Cup final).
Locadia's outstanding month makes him jump ahead of V.A. in the league scoring table as the Dutch now has 13 goals to the Brazilian's 12. Southampton's Austin managed to jump all the way to the top of the table by raising his goal total to 18, an effort that help him earn Player of the Month honors (over an also deserving Locadia). V.A. continues to lead the league in assists with 12 while Nicola Leali has raised his clean sheets total to 8, good to be tied for 4th best in the PL but still only half as many as Courtois, the league's best. In Champions League, Atletico's Jovetic leads all scorers with 8 goals but Locadia and CR7 trail closely with 7 goals each. V.A. also leads this competition in assists with 7, while Lealie is tied for the most clean sheets with Barca's De Gea each of them with 5.
The calendar reaching May means the final evaluations have been handed in from the academy so let's take a look at how the youth squad looks:
- Pavel Vrhovec (CF, 65-69 (+8) OVR, 87-93 POT): 17-year old from Croatia has now been confirmed as the top prospect in the academy. He would be no better than the 5th striker on the team right now so the board and coach are trying to figure out whether it's better to hold off on promoting him.
- Sean Foran (LM, 66-70 (+4), 83-89): 16-year old from Ireland has now been on hard for 2 final reports from the academy and you have to wonder whether he'll be happy staying in it for another full season.
- Victor Soriano (GK, 61-65 (+1), 83-89): While the 15-year old from Venezuela joined the academy being highly rated he did not show a lot of improvement this season so it'll be important for him to grow his game a lot in the upcoming season.
- Franco Gomez (CAM, 65-69 (+14), 80-86): One of the most improved players is this 16-year old shorty from Venezuela whose promise makes up for his size (5'5"). Described as a playmaker.
- Esteban Navarro (CM, 61-65 (+11), 80-86): 16-year old from Venezuela also described as a playmaker. His skillset may not necessarily be a good fit for the diamond but he surprised coaches with his vast improvement/
- Damiano Janse (CB, 61-65 (+18), 79-85): 16-year old from Netherlands earns the title of "Most Improved". He'll actually be tried at CDM since his stature (5'11") isn't ideal for a CB.
- Fabrice Mengual (RM, 58-62 (+2) 78-84): 17-year old playmaker from France who actually projects as more of a CAM. He's a candidate to be promoted soon since he may not progress a whole lot more in the academy.
- Matthieu Maupay (CAM, 61-65 (+4), 74-80): 16-year old from France described as an attacker who would benefit from another full season in the academy.
- Rodrigo Marquez (RB, 53-63 (+10), 73-85): 16-year old from Venezuela who will be played at CB due to no speed and a solid frame of 6'3", 178lbs.
- Victor Soriano (CF, 52-58, 71-79): 16-year old from Venezuela is the second prospect from the country in our academy with that name and last name. Unfortunately as a late newcomer to the academy he was not evaluated for progress.
- Stef Gilissen (CB, 52-56 (+14), 74-80): 16-year old from Netherlands who has settled to play at CB. Physically strong.
- Ciaran Kavanagh (CM, 59-63 (+1), 72-78): 16-year old from Ireland who also projects as a technically-gifted CAM.
- Siem Reijnen (CB, 50-54 (+9), 73-77): 16-year old from the Netherlands described as physically strong.
- Pablo Ruiz (CF, 49-57 (+11), 66-78): 16-year old from Venezuela possessing outstanding physical tools (6'4", 178lbs, physically strong). The team is hoping to develop his skills enough to make him a contributor
* Denotes recent addition to the academy.
Current roster (* Denotes player graduated from the youth academy):
Opponents in May:
5/1 - Real Madrid (Champions League)
5/4 - Liverpool
5/7 - West Ham (East London Derby)
5/11 - Manchester United
5/14 - QPR
5/18 - Everton
5/26 - Chelsea
Jikes, that doesn't look like the easiest of the months for the Daggers. Can they keep up form after losing Sarr to injury? Will they be able to go into the final league game of the season with a chance to win the Premier League? Will they reach the Champions League final? Can they possibly win an European double? I don't know, but I bet you're going to want to read the End of the Season Update!

STAY TUNED!
