This is my first PES year also. Not sure if you're coming from FIFA, but there are definitely some habits Gameplay wise that are hard to break. I've found a couple things.
1 - the AI sometimes decides it's going to be aggressive and sometimes it's not. I haven't figured out the tactical trigger(maybe it's individual player traits). I've been having yellows, reds, and penalties the past two games after none the 3 or so before that.
2. There's a certain art to drawing the AI into to challenge that I've only just begun to pick up. The sprint button is much different to FIFA and there's no shield so you have to be more active just dribbling sideways and backwards even in the box (like in real life) and then work on the timing of bursts or tricks when you get that opening towards goal. Obviously, this is much better with tricky wingers.
I even noticed (in ML) that since one of my wingers has been particularly effective at assisting and creating, the AI had him very closely man marked and were very aggressive with him whenever he picked up the ball, fouling him quite a bit. So I started having him picking up the ball deeper in midfield and voila! space for my strikers in behind. I love the tactical back and forth. A little off topic but there you go.
