Took a very long break from this game.

Picking it up again today for the first time in a few months. I'm going to go with a huge database and pick a team from a division at least two steps down from the top league in a country. Not sure where yet, though.

You should do what I did and pick Paris FC. They have the potential to be promoted first year, and you can get some quality (relative to the league) free transfers willing to sign.

I ended up choosing a Larisa from the top Greek League because they were in the Europa League. I get to squad registration, and they don't have enough home grown players.

I might just pick up the Ipswich save I didn't get too far into.

Looks like after all that work to get this in a subforum, it's died down a bit.

Well, I picked up the Ipswich save and finished 7th. I was kind of on an island there in 7th by myself. I was 12 points out of the playoff and 9 points ahead of 8th. Kind of dug ourselves an early hole, battled back to move into 6th about 9 games from the end of the season and just ran out of steam at the end with a very tough schedule.

Didn't really make too many changes to the team in the off-season. We had good chemistry and I didn't want to disrupt too much. Made Liam Rosenior's loan a permanent move and brought in a young backup keeper.

Goal this year is to make the promotion playoff.

Soccer season is over so that might be why. I had a good Arsenal save going, but due to the fact that Cesc will likely leave, I'm refusing to play that save

Instead, I will start a new Liverpool save and have an England save running at the same time. I've never managed a National team, so it will be fun. Will keep you all posted

Yeah, I'm thinking about doing a Liverpool save too. Could be extremely interesting since they need some work...

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

I've made it to the beginning of January in year 2. 28 games in, Ipswich is sitting in 8th, 4 points out of a playoff spot. The board is expecting a playoff appearance. Won my first FA cup match (3rd round) against Middlebrough (promoted in year 1) on the road. It was a thrilling game that I won 3-2 on a stunning strike in the 87th minute, just when I thought a replay was in the cards. I drew Bristol City in the 4th round - very favorable. If I can get past them, I'll exceed the board expectations for the competition.

The problem hasn't been competing with the top teams, it's been losing to the bottom feeders. I need to change up my team talks when playing against teams I'm supposed to handle.

January 1st transfers: Brought in striker Morten Nordstrand from Denmark ($1.9 mil) to help take some of the load off of Tamás Priskin. He scored a goal on his debut in the the FA Cup match. Brought in Nicky Shorey from Aston Villa ($1.2 mil) for some depth at left back. He was sitting on reserves and I got him at a decent price. The final transfer I made was bringing in Ryan Jack, an 18-year-old center mid from Aberdeen ($950 K)with tons of potential.

I'll be looking to offload a couple underachieving veterans to continue the trend of making a younger team.

Don't have anything going on until the Champs League final today, so I'll probably fire it up and see if I can claw my way back into playoff contention.

                  Great thread

It's my 3td season with Nottingham Forest. I'm in Premier League but battling bravely against relegation.

My average team age is 23 so i would say there's a perspective for there guys

Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

Well, after a lengthy hiatus from the game, I've started a journeyman career with Sunday League experience. I started one before, but I lost the save.

After about a year of job hunting, I landed with Praiense in the central region of Portugal's bottom tier. We were in last place after 11 of 30 games.

With ten games left, we're still in last, 12 points from safety. We need a miracle to happen.

I don't think it's coming. I was just on a 4 match unbeaten run, all draws (3 of them 0-0), and then lost. We aren't generating enough offense. Kind of puzzling, since my striker is rated 5 stars. The breakdown is happening in the midfield. And because of the team's crap finances, the most I can offer a potential signing is $40. It's an impossible situation.

What happens when we get relegated? Do we just stay in the league?

Thank you Newcastle for not being able to handle your finances! I am suddenly in the picture for automatic promotion. 4 games left, 3 points back.

Spoke too soon, ended up having to play Newcastle in the playoff semis, and they crushed me 3-6 on aggregate.

It's actually probably a blessing in disguise as I'm probably two or three pieces away from staying up in the Premier League. Although, I did force a replay against Chelsea in the sixth round of the FA Cup (1-1 at home on a goal in the 93rd minute) and only lost 0-2 in the replay there. So who knows...

Next year the goal will be automatic promotion. I had the best home record in the league, losing only once, drawing 5 and winning the other 17. If I can get a few results away next year, it's a very realistic goal.

I have clinched 3rd place with Man City *Basically feels like cheating but whatever, it's still fun as hell.*

I am 4 points back of Spurs and 1 point back of Chelsea. It's been a very weird year for the EPL with both Arsenal and Liverpool out of the top 4 ATM and Liverpool is the only one with a chance, only 3 pts back of Man U who is in 4th. Sunderland, Burnley and it looks like Wigan will all be relegated. Not sure yet who will be be promoted but they should have a reasonable shot of staying with Hull and Wolves both staying up.

Oh and the transfer funds you get for being in title contention with Man City is just incredible.

After being in the employ of Praiense for the 2009/2010 season, I've decided to jump ship.

We finished 4 points from safety, and were relegated. I was gonna stick around and see what happens after your team gets relegated from the bottom tier, but during my vacation to the tables resetting, I was offered a job by Welsh club Caerleon. The preseason hasn't started yet, so I have time to establish myself at the club, establish tactics through friendlies, and maybe bring in some talent to cover our shortcomings.

The board expects us to "fight against relegation this year".

Being at 5000-1 odds to win the league does not spell good for our club.

I haven't said anything about this save, but something ridiculous just happened. SI is really trying to **** me over. First though, a little background...

I started a save as the manager of Lech Poznan in the Polish Ekstraklasa. I'm currently in my second season as manager. Lech is one of the best teams in the Polish league; they have potentially the best player (Sergey Krivets) and the best striker (Robert Lewandowski). Their supporting cast isn't half-bad either, with a bunch of capped internationals. The first season went well: I finished 2nd in the league by a single point, and made it to the group stage of the Europa Cup. I saw that the Ivory Coast job was available after the African Cup of Nations, so I jumped aboard for the World Cup, got knocked out in the second round (Drogba and Yaya Toure were injured), and immediately resigned (I didn't want to manage an international squad).

This season's what's gotten me frustrated though. In the offseason I went out to bolster the squad by getting a few free transfers. I was able to pick up former Turkish international Yildiray Basturk and Uruguayan international striker Marcelo Zayaleta. I thought my team would be set; I would run a 4-1-2-1-2 wide diamond, with attacking midfielder being the focal point of the attack -- both the playmaker and finisher. Zayaleta and Lewandowski would be up top, with Basturk as the AM, Krivets (he won Ekstraklasa POY last season) down the left, and a stud young Bosnian AM, Semir Stilic, down the right. All 3 of the offensive-minded midfielders are natural AMs, but can play down the wing if needed. However, Sports Interactive had other plans. Basturk (5-7 weeks at the time of the injury), Stilic (3-4 weeks), and Krivets (6-8 weeks) all went down with injuries and will all be unavailable for my Europa Cup game against Malaga. WTF? Sometimes this game really gets annoying.

                                EDIT:
The search in the top right of the screen is for Argentinian keeper Walter Fabian Assman, who was recommended to me by a scout. Just clearing things up...
