Re: ***The Official Football Manager Thread***

Started a career save after finally getting FM14. Hired by Crystal Palace near the end of November as they sat 14th in the league. Managed to play some good football and finished 11th (got as high as 8th at some points), including wins @ Spurs (2-0 in my first match) and @ City (3-2, but we almost gave it back). Key player for us was Marouane Chamakh (nightmares from the FM12 Online Save), who knocked in 18 goals which was 4th in the Prem. My fullbacks Jonathan Parr and Jack Hunt also played well and help the defense improve slightly from the time I got there til the end of the season. Next year's goal is to begin preparing the team for a Europa spot in 15-16, adding some depth and finish in the top half.

As far as the league, Man U won it running away and are currently working on a treble (still have the FA and CL Finals against Spurs and Bayern). Chelsea, Spurs and Southampton (!) round out the CL teams, while Liverpool bounced back after a rough start (and a sacking for Rodgers to hire Guus Hiddink) finish and win the COC. Everton finished 6th and get one of the other Europa spots, while City finished 7th and gets the other one (they're in the EL final). Arsenal finished 8th and the media was wondering if Wenger would get an extension, so it should be fun to see how that plays out.

Hull, Villa, and Fulham are the two teams going down while Nottingham Forrest, Leicester, and one of Blackburn/Wigan/Middlesbrough/Reading are coming up.

EDIT: Spurs won the FA Cup 2-1 after both teams scored in the final 3 mins, and then Adebayor hit the winner in the 117th minute. Man U followed that up by losing a week later 1-0 to Bayern in Lisbon. Wigan meanwhile, is the 3rd team that will be promoted.

I really have no idea what I'm doing with the financial side of things here. Is it worth it to sell players in order to try and boost finances? I have never had to worry about money, having just managed at Tottenham.

Before my second season just started at St. Pauli, I had a message in my inbox saying that my finances were fine right now, but they were expected to deteriorate after the season.

Gladbach really wants one of my prospects, he's a striker with 4.5 star potential. He's already 1.5 stars now at 15 years old. Here's his page:

      Marcelin Bagnack_ Overview Profile.png

They offered $700k, and $900k. I turned down both offers. Now they are offering $1.1m, and I'm wondering if it might be just better to bank that money, but I would hate losing my best Youth Team prospect.

Took a couple screens of my finances, if that would be helpful in giving any advice:

      Any advice would be nice!

Your finances are just fine. You have more than I do (though I'd say we're at the same relative level.) You'll lose money during the season, but between sponsorships, TV revenue and end-of-season league payouts you'll be fine. Hold on to your good players as long as you can.

Just keep the wage bill under control and you'll be good.

The only time selling your good players/prospects off for money is worth it is when you're a lower-league team with pretty much zero income. Those players are the ones that make differences.

Gah, things are going so well for me this season I don't want to fall asleep, haha.

The exact same squad as last year, save for two subs (MC Michels, and a Striker named Jens Bender. Bender isn't too great, but he's a body and has performed admirably. In his 12 league substitute appearances, which normally happen around the 65-70 minute mark, he has 4 goals and a 6.79 rating. Michels has 2 starts, 9 substitute appearances and 2 goals with 2 assists and a 6.93 rating. Pleased as punch with their contributions from the bench.)

The 4-3-3 I instituted at the end of last year (with a couple tweaks to try and shore up the defense. It's better, but still not where I want it) seems to be performing wonderfully, all things considered (two years of struggling to hit 10th in the 2. Bundesliga - now I'm halfway through the season and perched on top of the league, though barely.)

I also need to give my scout a raise. He was scouting Sweden and found this gem for me. Now, the scout that found him has a scout CA/scout PA rating of 13/13, so not great but decent enough. He says this kid could turn out to be a leading Bundesliga defensive mid - though I am going to focus him at MC and use him as my DLP. He just needs better dribbling. Chief Scout may need a raise for finding this kid. He joins at the beginning of January... the best part? It only cost me 5K in compensation for signing him.

If Michels keeps progressing and this kid pans out, I have 2 of my midfield set for the next 5 years at least which is a nice feeling.

After facing every team so far, not bad. My team plays really aggressive so we pick up a lot of fouls, and in Ligue 1, 3 yellows = suspension so having great depth on the team has been huge.

Also took over Austrian National Team. Beat Croatia 8-2 on aggregate to qualify for the World Cup.

After finishing 14th in the first two seasons:

We're going to the Europa League Playoff Round!

On the final match day, we were 1 behind Glabach in 7th. The 7th-placed Europa League spot will be going to HSV instead since they are in the Final of the Pokal against Bayern. We were away to Leverkusen, while Glabach were home to Nurnburg. Didn't look good, but we got the gutsy 2-1 win while Nurnberg defeated Glabach 1-0.

Expectations for the 3 seasons so far were 18th/18th/16th. So the board is happy to say the least. I have had to fight off a couple enticing job offers from Italy (Roma and Lazio). I've also had every struggling La Liga club offer me a job, but I have absolutely no desire to go there.

                Spoiler

So... that happened. Not that it wasn't the struggle of all struggles throughout the season.

Went on a tear mid-season, form dropped and we were just trying to tread water at the end.

Last match of the season was v. RB Leipzig. They were sitting in 3rd place with 55 points. I was sitting in 4th (tied with Koln, but above them on goal differential) with 54 points. We go up 4-0, but RB Leipzig scores twice, once in the 85th and once in the 89th and I was on edge until the extra time was finally up. Win 4-2.

Secured our place in the promotion playoff for finishing 3rd. Who do I face? None other than my (only affiliate) parent club, Werder Bremen. They're the team facing relegation, so they get the home leg first. We go to a 1-1 Draw. I'm alright with this, they aren't playing too well (even though they are the far stronger team on paper) and I feel like we can take this at home. We go to my home match part of the playoff. A very drab game with lots of fouling on both sides for a 0-0 Draw. We're through on Aggregate!

So glad I can watch my side get continually dismantled by the likes of Bayern, Schalke, Dortmund and Gladbach (who have finished 16th in '13/14, 2nd in '14/15, 7th in '15/16 and now 2nd in 16/17.)

Did what I set out to do in promotion to the Bundesliga, now if I get a nice offer in a year or two from a big side I may leave depending on how my squad is shaking out.

It's crazy, this game. From a team picked to finish dead last in the 3. Liga in 13/14 to winning promotion to the Bundesliga in 16/17. My best game of this FM (though it still doesn't sniff my Vauxhall Motors game from years ago. Yet.)

I need to sort my defense out, though. Led the league in goals scored (70 in 34 games) but was tied for 6th (out of 18) with goals conceded.

Yep, to either get promoted or save relegation. Top two/bottom two = instant promotion/relegation. Same going from 3. Liga to 2. Bundesliga.

Welp, Germany lost one of their Europe spots to Italy going into next season. Guess it's a good thing we got in when we did! Now top 2 go to CL groups, 3rd to CL Playoff. 4th to Europa groups. 5th to Europa Playoff. 6th (or Pokal winner/runner up) to Europa 3rd Qualifying Round.

I'm fighting the urge right now, will it change any of my current players or just the new ones?

missed out on Europa by one place and 3 points. Board still gave me a new contract though, and were pleased that we finished 8th. Gave me 12M to shore up the squad, fixed up the defense a bit, and we're sitting at 4-1-1 right now, including this gem:

It was a televised game as well, it's also the first game I have ever gotten 100% fan reaction from.

The good news, Iruna survived in their first year without me, the bad news is the new boss has all but cleaned house, some of the players moved up in the world, some of them.... didn't. I was only able to nab up three of them, one of them is back on loan at Iruna though.

Also - the best part of this tactic I'm using, as evidenced above(kind of) is the inordinate amount of own goals I get, last season I forced 21 own goals, including 3 in a 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg.
