I just don't see how you could have watched that team and not have Khedira as the problem piece. Probably 3 or 4 other guys as well. Ozil wasn't spectacular, but he was nowhere near the worst.

Offensively, he was probably one of the best, I'm pretty sure he was one of the top chance creators at the WC.

Muller, for example, has gotten only a little criticism despite being absolutely awful.

The entire midfield and attack **** the bed for them at one point or another. Plenty of blame to go around.

Neuer, Hummels, Ozil, and to a much lesser extent Kimmich and Reus were basically the only players that showed up at all.

It's the same as when Ozil plays for Arsenal. Derided for his attitude, effort, and production, yet the stats tell a completely different story.

He has often played best when he's pissed, so I'm looking forward to a very motivated season.

For Arsenal it's a bit different, mostly because the team had him and Alexis who don't try to defend, so it was a liability with both of them, AND a striker who often didn't defend. Because Ozil is our best player he often got scapegoated on our defensive shortcomings due to his effort.

Wouldn’t say he doesn’t try to defend, he’s just more of a Spanish-style defender pressing and cutting off passing lanes rather than going around making tackles.

that's fair, based on what i've seen his german criticisms were mostly based in believing he's not good enough, while most of the Arsenal stuff I've read/heard is all defensive effort related

Which is crazy because he’s always been one of their best players

Bingo. Just because he's not Mark Noble (an idiot running around aimlessly) he's viewed as someone who isn't defending—crazy.

It's really refreshing to hear Petr Cech say that he wants to beat Bernd Leno to the starting GK job.

I not only love how the competition will improve them both, but that Leno will have Cech to learn from, and that Cech will be receiving new instructions during training from a new GK coach.

Age alone did not turn Cech into what he's become at Arsenal—it's the defense/system in front of him and the things he's told to work on or not work on. I'm expecting to see much better performances out of him.

I also think he'll now be more vocal, even if we're not seeing it. I don't think Arsene allowed the type of atmosphere to exist in which a senior player such as Cech would lay into someone making mistakes or not showing effort. I only say this due to the whole telling Bould to never yell at the players nonsense.

I was a bit sad to see this, however, he just hasn't developed like many of the other youngsters. Not really any room for him to get any playing time.

I wish him all the best.

Emile Smith-Rowe. Remember the name. He scored quite the goal the other day against Athletico.
