It will be interesting to see who the USMNT pursue.

Do they go after a name?

Or do they go Berhalter Redux and hire Cherundolo?

Sounds like they have already approached Klopp, but he doesn’t want to take discussions further because he wants a break from soccer.

You at least try, but if you know thing 1 about Klopp you know when he says he’s taking a break, he’s taking a break.

But also this job is laughably beneath him.

Jesse Marsch did not hold back…

US Soccer needs major changes and he is completely correct to criticize the organization.

Jesse Marsch is a meme. He has never been the answer.

Klopp would make the team better obviously, but the ceiling is too low to even bother.

Marsch doing everything he can to let us know the organization needs to be razed.

I wish he'd go full ham and just let out the specifics.

That anyone in the organization from the past 10 years still has a job is absurd.

Genuinely curious, why do people assume Klopp would make the USMNT better? He's never coached NT football and it's a completely different animal from club football. Klopp relies a lot on working with players tactically and developing long-lasting relationships so they trust him, same thing Xabi has done at Leverkusen. Klopp also favors the Gegenpress, which I don't think the American players have the fitness levels to sustain because most of them aren't playing high-level club football.

They need to give up the ghost and go back to playing organized defense, behind the ball and counter attacking.

Agree, but we don't have a back line to do that right now. I'm hoping we see John Brooks make a return to the squad since Gregg isn't around to be upset that a player stood up to him. For now, the best options we have in the middle are probably CCV and Brooks. Both just need more playing time with the NT, which Gregg wasn't providing.

I think we’re in the same boat as England but obviously to a lesser degree because of their grassroots programs.

On a technical level we’ll never be able to “out-football” any decent footballing nation so we do we go back to the days of just out working the opposition or can we create a balance of grit & determination mixed in with match-winners?

We aren’t France or anything but this comment feels a bit outdated? There was literally 2 MLS players on the entire Copa squad and most of the rest play in a top division somewhere in Europe.

Also, if there’s anything American players have pretty much always been able to do, it’s fitness lol. We played hard defense and could run, that was basically our identity for decades.

We’ve arrived now at a point where we have players of much higher technical ability than before, but still the same fitness output.

KG is right, we should be looking to strike a balance as we continue to progress forward. There’s plenty of countries that play better football with better results than us with similarly skilled players.

Being at a top club and getting minutes are two different things. I should've specified that, sorry. For example:
                          • Matt Turner - 17 starts
                          • Gio Reyna - avg 25-mins over 20 appearances (2-clubs)
                          • Folarin Balogun - avg 58-mins over 29 appearances

I'll update my script to pull details on the rest later, but those were three regular starters during Copa America. Yes, they're on clubs in top divisions, but the playing time is minimal.

Balogun had a great tournament and was pulled too early almost every game.

The other two are poor examples because honestly Matt Turner isn’t very good and we should be looking to test out some young keepers. That Slonina kid was considered top 3 in the MLS at like 18, Turner was even jn the MLS at the same time.

Gio is moving closer and closer to being a pretty significant waste of talent. He’s got attitude issues and clearly lacks a lot of drive, the fact that he started and played every game is not an indictment of our talent level, it’s very obviously an indictment of Berhalter.

Go look at the Swiss and Turkey teams, that is roughly the level of talent we are well within reach of, I mean almost the entire Turkish team just plays in Turkey. The damn Greek team that won the euros were all playing in Greece lmao, the Greek league isn’t even on par with the MLS.

Hell, go look at Colombias squad lol. Bunch of dudes playing in Brazil. Minutes played in a top league is absolutely not the metric we should be basing these things on. Remember Eduardo Vargas? Regularly a bench player in lower divisions, but he put that Chile shirt on and he was an absolute menace, guaranteed starter.

Yes, you definitely several top level players to regularly make deep runs in tournaments, but you absolutely do not require an entire team of top club level starters to compete.

This has been a coaching issue from the beginning, Berhalter wasn’t even that good of an MLS coach and he was given our golden generation for an unbelievably long time.

Agree; however, I still don't think we have the talent to make deep runs in a world tournament. I believe the USMNT is a fringe top 20 in the world, which puts us in the round of 16 at best.

Don’t necessarily disagree but teams outside the top 20 make deep runs all the time. I mean by the rankings we ARE a top 20 team.

We should at the very least be able to make it extremely difficult to beat us for any of the top top teams, and able to pull off results on occasion. Currently neither is the case.
