meh, the "off field stuff" doesn't affect me, it bothers me that the dissenters waited for them to lose to come out en masse

something interesting I heard on a podcast today was that the world caught up because they have stylistic identities in major soccer countries and groom the young players in that style, and the US doesn't really have a style and basically relied on just being awesome for 20+ years. The youth academies aren't coached and groomed to play a specific style because the US simply doesn't have a style

        Yep.

        - motivation at an all-time high for opponents who, talent wise, have caught up
        - past-their-prime players getting too many minutes
        - injuries
        - ignoring the red flags from the Olympics

But of course once they lose, the “shut up and dribble” crowd comes out like roaches.

100% this. The USWNT got away with being the best athletes on the field for many years. Once teams started to catch them physically, that's when the beautiful parts of football come to life. Tactics, squad management, and game management take on a new level of importance. That's where Vlatko failed miserably from the get go.

The US being completely dominant at World Cups is also kind of a myth. They’ve always been the favorites, but there has always been at least one team that could hang with the US, and that has steadily increased to about seven or eight currently. The bottom teams are also much less embarrassing than even only 4 years ago.

91 - dominant until the final where they won 2-1 over Norway

95 - lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Norway

99 - Dominant in the group stage. Close match with Germany in the quarterfinals, beat China in the final after a 0-0 match

03 - Lost 3-0 to eventual champions Germany in the semi-finals

            07 - Lost 4-0 to eventual runners-up Brazil in the semi-finals

11 - About a minute from losing to Brazil in the quarterfinals but scored at 120+2 and won in penalties. Lost to Japan in the final in penalties

15 - This team was heavily criticized at the time by fans and several members of the 99 team for playing too defensively. They earned 7 points in the groups while only scoring 4 goals. They absolutely destroyed Japan in the final 5-2. This team gave up 1 goal the entire tournament in a close match. By the time Japan got 2, the US was already up by 4/5 goals and in DGAF mode. All other matches except a 3-1 win over Australia in the groups were clean sheets. This is probably the team that performed most consistently well over an entire tournament. Their defense was unable to be broken, period.

19 - Blitzed through the group stage with 9 points including a 13-0 win over a team that really had no business being there. Squeaked through every knockout match 2-1 before beating the Dutch 2-0 in the finals.

This years team couldn’t finish, simple as that. You knew they were going to have issues when they only beat Vietnam by a 3-0 score. I am not surprised at all that they lost to Sweden. This is the worst team we’ve ever brought to the World Cup with the worst manager we’ve ever had.

True. Perhaps it's time for them to stop leaning into it with this sort of stuff?

                This...for both the men's and women's teams.

Say what you want about Jurgen Klinsmann, but he attempted to do this (I had the USSF coaching manual downloaded on my old PC that explained the philosophies of what they were wanting to do from the youth sides all the way to the Senior team). But nope...we pivoted back to Bruce Arena.

The comments were spot on...and whether the comment ages well will be seen in 4 years.

What does US Soccer have against Cameron Carter-Vickers? Did he have a falling out with someone at some point?

Today I realized he is still only 25 years old and is arguably the best center back in the system. CCV is much more athletic than other CBs coaches always throw back their and he's much better building play out of the back. His footwork and passing ability is better than anyone else we have on the back line currently. CCV's made the Scottish Best XI for the past two seasons and will likely make it a third.

                      Hoping someone can educate me.

Trying to understand why certain players don’t get looks for the USMNT is a puzzle that no one has been able to solve. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

For 30 years, at least, the organization has clearly been nepotistic, incestuous, and immature.

Aside from the comedy of errors at the top, which are bad enough...few players are ever really held accountable for their performances or effort.

But, yes, the omission of CCV is silliness.

The WC is getting more and more shark jumpy.

The 2030 World Cup is set to be played in Europe, Africa and South America to allow the tournament to start with a 100th birthday party in Uruguay.

Don't want to wait until 2038 or 2042 for that sweet Saudi cash!

I'm mildly interested in how it's going to be rationalized for the Saudis to stay in the AFC while their clubs are allowed to play in the Champions League (because we all know that's coming at some point).

I appreciate them wanting to do a match in Uruguay for the 100th anniversary, but the fact that the tournament is going to be in 6 different countries seems dumb as hell.

I get that certain countries will likely never get a WC because of politics, money, etc, and that sucks, but this makes it to where none of these countries will be spotlighted the way a host country should be.
