re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
In my opinion we basically lost a whole cycle of development when we had the 1989s-1991's miss out on both the U20 World Cup in 2011 and the 2012 Olympics. Look at our squads we brought for the qualification for those (WC first and Olympics second):

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
That's basically what the article I posted the day of the Panama match said. NOBODY and I mean NOBODY panned out (OK, Wood) from that batch of players. So we are doing what we've always done and trying to paper over problems. If there was ever going to be a WC we missed out on it was this one. And it still took basically everything else going wrong to happen.Comment

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
And those youngsters did what EVERY young player SHOULD do...seek better training and competition...and yet they are essentially PUNISHED for it by USSF.
I can guarantee you that if any nation, especially a 2nd tier nation, had young players getting regular time and relative success in better foreign leagues, those players would be called up.
I mean, what was the plan?? To qualify for Russia and waste it by taking the Bradley Crew? It's not like the young players mentioned would be well-integrated by then.
No real vision, no guts...

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
For all that's being said about how it was that we got here, there are a couple points that still stand out.
1) Making the World Cup is not guaranteed for any nation, let alone one of our standing. The Netherlands aren't in it. Chile is not in it. England missed out in 1994. The list goes on. We got spoiled. We'll be in it again.
2) We can talk until we're blue in the face about which players should or shouldn't be called up. But first and foremost, players who are called up better be ready to PLAY FOR 90 ****ING MINUTES. This used to be the thing we could always hang our hat on. You better be ready for the United States to run for 90. I am still disgusted by our play in the 1st half of a match where a World Cup spot was on the line. I seriously thought our water was spiked with quaaludes. Darlington Nagbe at one point stared at a ball that was at worse a 50-50. Seriously stood there and looked at it while a T&T player took possession unhindered. Jozy Altidore did his damn pouting act because conditions weren't to his liking and the game wasn't coming to him. The space between the attack and defense was absolutely comical, and our midfielders couldn't be assed to track back and try and pressure the ball. I cannot believe how we came out in that game.
And this is a huge issue as well. The academies in Europe actually have an incentive to develop players because they get compensated when a player they train ends up making it. Do you know how many kids they go through before one "hits"? They either get paid for a transfer, or even if the player decides they want to end their first senior contract, they still get compensated if they sign for free with someone else.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 10-16-2017, 04:16 PM.Comment

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
@Tim: point number 2 I’d say is what we can probably hold Arena to. Conditioning and mental readiness on match day are down to coaching staff. Especially when it comes to fitness. I mean, how do you fail that? That’s literally the only real strength we’ve ever had on an international level. Our players were always super fit, and very strong. Look at the WC under JK, European teams were exhausted playing in those conditions and we had multiple players doing 70 yard sprints against Belgium in the 115th minute.
You’re right on that one, those things should really be the minimum requirement for any US team.
I still maintain that we should have tried to just throw all sorts of money at Bielsa after JK was let go. He probably wouldn’t have wanted the job, but for the very small chance he’d say yes it would have been worth a shot.Comment

3 players playing in the Danish league on their last team...
We have some pretty good players that have a part to play in the future of the US team that have come from MLS academies and still play there. Acosta is going to be a key part of the team. We need someone to come in that understands that MLS is fine as a supplement to developing national team players, but it sure as hell isn't going to consistently build the national team for success the way it's set up. Get someone who will put together a staff that can figure out how we're going to play and find the players who fit that regardless of where they play. We're not here to prove MLS is great. We're. here. to. win. games.Comment

Wish we wouldn't have waited until a meaningless friendly AFTER we failed to qualify to do it. A bunch of these guys absolutely should have been looked at in the Gold Cup.Comment

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
McKennie didn't just randomly appear at Schalke, he was a top prospect in the MLS and they did basically everything they could to try to keep him there.
Miazga has been a starter for Vitesse since he got there.
We were playing midfielders as fullbacks instead of calling up Lichaj, who has been Forest's captain for at least two seasons.
We've been in desperate need of a strong Jones-esque midfielder and oh hey look it's Danny Williams, one of Reading's best players who now plays in the Prem.
Probably the biggest joke though is Horvath with a single cap. I know people Love Hamid and want him to have a chance, but Horvath was a starter for an EL club at freaking 18. It's bonkers that we elected to not blood him in so we could take Howard, Guzan and Rimando to every single game.Comment

Definitely. Some of the omissions are honestly laughable.
