I’d say Mexico is going to annihilate us in the Gold Cup but we might not even make it far enough for that to happen.Comment

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
So, first I want to preface this potentially long post with the fact that I think that Gregg Berhalter is still the guy to take us forward. I have faith that we are currently in a transition period, and while the growing pains are going to suck, the pay off will in the end be worth it. We had a period for far too long in which we were directionless under the stewardship of Dave Sarachan because no one knew what was going on, then we hired a dedicated 'system' coach and we get to go through more pains.
The game itself wasn't the worst I've seen, what I'm actually most happy with is we stuck with what we were doing instead of panicking and caring about a result in a friendly. What we missed the most with our amalgamation of talent on the pitch was the calmness of someone like Michael Bradley, which is part of the reason why I think he is still very valuable to the pool as a whole. You could see the panic after the first goal, which just led to more problems. Trying to play out of the back without our first choice centrebacks was always going to lead to a disaster, Miazga is basically the only starting calibre centreback that saw the pitch last night. Walker Zimmerman is close, but not quite there. Miazga/Brooks is our preferred starting pair, and Miazga/Brooks/Zimmerman is probably our preferred starting 3. Our Midfield is basically trash. McKennie has a bright future, but he's not a one man pivot, so he can't do it all himself. McKennie, Adams, and Bradley are the only ones that should be playing in the centre of the pitch to start a match. Holmes is someone I like, but I don't know if he's quite where I'd want him to be to start. Jozy Altidore had a good 45 minutes, he out of everyone surprised me with how well he ended up fitting in to Berhalter's system, I didn't know if he still had that kind of hold up play in his pocket, but he showed that he not only did, but why he should probably be our first choice striker for the Gold Cup.
The Gold Cup is probably going to be ugly, between a heavy transition period and the fact that our pool is lacking in consistent talent means it might be an early exit. Personally I hope that we treat this Gold Cup more like friendlies and keep forcing the system that Berhalter wants to play, so we know who will and will not make it. The Gold Cup has no meaning now, so why not use it to our advantage.Support Local Sports

These last couple friendlies we were just learning what not to do in the Gold Cup. *taps head*Comment

re: Official USMNT/USWNT Thread
I am worried that Gregg is going to rely too heavily on the MLS guys he has coached.
Trapp, Zardes and some others have no place sniffing the pitch during the Gold Cup.
But yeah, the midfield was a disaster and the defense lacked any sort of composure. Additionally, I think the officials were also terrible but that's to be expected in any sort of matchup involving CONCACAF.Too Old To Game Club

As far as Trapp goes, I don't think there's a glaring omission that warrants him not seeing the pitch, we could try out some younger guys, but someone like Roldan is higher on my chopping block than even Trapp goes, personally.Support Local Sports

If the Gold Cup mattered at all for anything, I'd agree. I am interested to see what Zardes does with Altidore in Berhalter's system, if they ever go that route.

I would like to see Hyndman get a look though, rather than more MLS players.Comment

So Tyler Adams is replaced by Reggie Cannon, meaning that Berhalter was probably going to deploy him in that RB/DM hybrid position, but Reggie is a guy I like a lot if we paired him with Antonee Robinson as wing-backs, but I don't see Berhalter sacrificing his identity for excitement.
The one midfielder I was excited for after friendlies was Duane Holmes, but he's now gone home with an injury and was replaced by Djordje Mihailovic, I'm also a fan of Mihailovic, but he and Holmes are also remarkably different players, I don't expect Mihailovic to see the field unless Pulisic comes off.Support Local Sports

Suntan were you the one conducting the Boyd train? Kid is pretty good.
Also if that Zardes goal doesn’t become a serious contender for the Puskas then it’s just proof the award is rigged.Comment
