I mean, this basically paints the passing story as much as it is during this game. I don't have a great angle on BR Live, but I wonder if they were just missing Gnabry on the right or if his runs weren't as easy to pick out? He was great when they got him the ball, but obviously they just didn't do that quite enough. Kimmich was a big miss for them as they may have attempted to operate more on the right side with him over Rafinha.

We don’t know if Kovac expected Ribery to do everything. Teams are always going to attack the right side of Liverpool’s defense because you don’t have to deal as much with VVD and TAA struggles with quick players and positioning. But at the same time, Alaba has Salah in the back of his mind the whole time. So James should have been coming over to play combinations with Ribery on the inside much more. Now whether that was something Kovac missed or James didn’t do is the question. Mueller wouldn’t have had to have an instruction to start trying that, that’s for sure. This is a big reason I was dumbfounded that Bayern fans actually thought him being suspended in such big matches was a good thing. They looked absolutely clueless going forward over the 180 minutes.

He was a talent that they had hoped to develop, I personally always preferred Neves of the Portuguese duo, but Sanches has shown that he's not afraid to take on defenders, and is a capable playmaker further up the pitch. He still lacks a bit in making the correct defensive choice, and some of his passes are sporadic so he hasn't really fit in just yet. His Swansea loan spell was nothing short of a disaster for him, his confidence, and Swansea, but he still has flashes of that brilliance. I was hoping he'd have logged more than the 717 minutes he has across competitions. Still just 21 though, so he's got a few years before I think they need to move on from him.

That's fair, on rewatch it seems to be a combination of both, offensively I would've though they'd have Ribery cut in and have Alaba on his flank with Rodriguez either trailing or sitting in a half-space where he operates better. There was certainly no attacking plan outside of "Get the ball to the wings, then hope Lewandowski is the best striker to ever live"

The real problem Kovac has is that this works far too often, because Lewy is amazing.

If things don't go according to whatever weird plan he originally had, it ends up not really making a difference because Lewy will just score anyway.

Fabinho, Matip (he was very good yesterday despite the OG), and VVD did such a great job on him over the two legs. He would've had a tap in if Matip didn't turn the ball into the net. But if that's all you really have to say about him over 180 minutes, you've done well. I thought Keita was going to be the key midfield addition this season, but his injuries have come at bad times and he still hasn't gotten fully off the ground. Fabinho, however, is looking like very good value for the ~£40M that was paid for him.

Klopp eased Fabinho in nicely. I remember media folks getting ready to label him a flop when he didn’t immediately slot in.

I’d still like to see his birth certificate though!

Not sure I agree tbh. Lewa's off-ball movement is just about as good as Ronaldo's, the biggest issue he had was quality service. There were a bunch of runs I saw of his where nobody on Bayern was keyed in at all and he just didn't get the ball. Bayern's service to him over the course of both legs was honestly shocking.

Your defense did well overall, but if Lewa had good service imo this would have been a different tie.

Chris Smalling says he knows a weakness of Messi but won’t share it before the CL tie.

Has to be the most excited I’ve been for another team’s CL match in a while.

To be fair, it would definitely be hard for Messi to score against your team if he had to leave on a stretcher before he had the chance.
