Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Sheffied United have 1 point (9 points from 17th). This time last year, Norwich had 10, and Watford had 8. Year before that? Cardiff and Fulham had 8, Huddersfield had 7 (one less match played than Sheffield United).
I'd say there's no way they'll survive, but this time last year Bournemouth had 17 (but only 6 from 17th), so who knows.Comment

After they actually looked decent in a loss to Liverpool, I didn't think there was any way they still wouldn't have a win by now. This is historic ****tiness we are witnessing.Comment

Massive game on Sunday for them. If they lose at Brighton they may as well pack it in.Comment

I still assume they'll break out of it, grab some wins (Derby only had one) and not be anywhere near this record, but we'll see how long this spreadsheet makes sense to update.

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
Several days ago I heard The Athletic's Tom Worville mention how overall, the league is pressing less than last year, which makes sense. I wanted to see how much, and also compare the differences across the league, because I'm me. So, here is the PPDA (passes per defensive action) from last season and this season at essentially the same point.
Red means more pressing, as there are fewer passes allowed before an action, green means less pressing as more passes are allowed. Note: Villa has only played 11 matches—everyone else is at 13 except Man City and Newcastle, who are at 12.
It's interesting to see how some teams are pressing far less. At this stage last year, Leicester City had the lowest PPDA. This year they're 11th—pressing much, much less. Also interesting is how Southampton and Villa are the only two who were pressing often last year and have maintained that level.
Has Southampton's unwillingness to press less helped them stand out in their performances, as teams are facing presses less? Maybe it's one aspect, as they're much better off than last year. They've gone from 9 points, 31 goals allowed to 24 points, 18 goals allowed.
Last really interesting thing I noticed, West Ham have the biggest difference. They're pressing much, much less. Has it helped? Well, last year after 13 matches they had 13 points, 23 goals allowed. This year? 21 points, 16 goals allowed. Seems to be working.

Here's Tom's piece in The Athletic going beyond PPDA that puts my personal curiosity project table to shame!Last edited by Krebstar; 12-18-2020, 11:46 AM.Comment

Re: 2020-2021 English Football Thread
So the Premier League has voted to allow two more substitutions......to the bench bringing the total you can carry to 9.
SMH
The FA needs to just step in and say "It's 5 subs, we don't care what you all think"
There's also an approved "Concussion" sub change which could see you make two additional "head injury" related subs. No idea how that's going to work out. There has to be some kind of independent consult like the NFL does or teams are going to abuse it.Comment

TLDR; Harlequins used fake blood capsules (and actually cut a players lip to help conceal the usage) to simulate injuries which would allow them a blood substitution.Comment

Yep—my first thought each time it gets discussed is 'Bloodgate' in rugby union.

Hehehehe I remember this match vividly.
