Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
That’s not “ball skills” even though that term doesn’t exist in soccer. The lack of decisiveness in the final third isn’t a physical thing, it’s a mental trait. We created some chances, especially early because of our midfield was able to hold onto possession. Anyone that has suffered through USMNT midfields of the past with guys know how much better this current one is which is crazy because they’re so young.
They beat us in transition and were clinical in front of goal (minus the Dumfries goal). Our midfield was the reason why we were able to get out of the group. It’s not even debatable. English fans were slandering Declan Rice and Bellingham, 2 players that are going to move for ~200 mil combined next summer.
We also like Brahv and Imtellin… said, played into their best strength but they have a legend coaching and we have Berhalter. Can’t underestimate that.!
What I disagree with and don't like about some of these posts are the Berhalter is bad takes flying about. Its not just indecisiveness, we lack the guy that can use creativity to create opportunities in the middle of the final 3rd. I think its more of a lack of talent rather than indecisiveness. Sometimes your dudes just aren't as good as the other guy's dudes.
Realistically this result was probably the ceiling for this squad but some are acting like aw shucks if only Berhalter wasn't trashComment

Full agreement with you that the midfield is the strength of the team and performed well box to box the whole tournament.

Did you see Van Gaal’s post match presser?
That’s a nice way of saying the other manager isn’t good [emoji23].
Soccer is one sport where you can get your tactics right and still lose but even throwing on Reyna in the #9 and taking out Weah was ….yeah…bad

Edit: As always context matters and your source left out the full quote:
"Team USA didn't adjust or adapt and we based a tactical plan on that and that probably allowed us to win," said Van Gaal. "But I don't expect France, Argentina or Spain are going to adapt to the Netherlands. I think we have big chances here."
It was hardly a shot at Berhalter and more of a general I expect teams to continue playing the way that got them here statement. Unless of course you think he is also saying that the managers of France, Argentina, and Spain are also not very goodLast edited by ggsimmonds; 12-03-2022, 04:26 PM.Comment

I will flat out be rooting against the US if that actually happens. I've already had to stop watching the Men in Blazers stuff because it's so damn annoying any time an American manager or player is hyped.Comment

Why are Argentina not running to the corner flag?
Australia nearly with an equalizer at the death. Argentina just kept shooting and shooting in injury time. Nearly cost them.Last edited by ~LiverpoolRed~; 12-03-2022, 04:04 PM.Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
I think Gregg would be a great coach for USMNT if he'd get out of the mindset that using MLS players is a recipe for success and find an assistant that lives/breathes tactics. I realize Zimmerman is one of the best defenders in MLS, but what is he really defending against? How we aren't starting guys like CC-V, Erik Palmer-Brown, or even John Brooks on our backline baffles me.
Also, today's game prove the need for a #9 more than ever. None of the options pull defenders out, hold up the ball, or create scoring opportunities. At this point, I'm saying we give Jordan Pefok the job since he's got the size and strength to at least be a presence in the middle.
And too expect Gio Reyna to make a difference in the second half when he's only seen the field 10 mins prior, give me a break.Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
The players failed to capitalize on their opportunities. Maybe there were things he could've done differently but ultimately its the players that play the game.

Cmon man…you know damn well that if another coach says “they didn’t adjust or adapt” that it’s an indirect shot at the coach. Doesn’t matter the sport. If you don’t think Deschamps, Enrique, or Scaloni are going to adjust things than I don’t what to say.
All of us here knew going into this tournament that our manager was our weakest link. That’s not to say we’d fare a lot better with a better manager but he was poor with adjustments vs Wales, got it right vs England and then poor again vs Iran and too open today.
If he stays we’ll waste the next WC cycle.

How you can sit here and say the problem was Berhalter when all 3 Dutch goals came from an unmarked shooter, Pulisic missed from point blank range, Wright had a goal practically handed to him but squandered it with a heavy touch, and countless other miscues were had.
What adjustment would solve this? "Hey guys don't forget to mark players in the box?"
The players made mistakes in a game against a club that had the quality to make them pay for it. Its that simple.
Go ahead and replace Berhalter and when the next coach has the same results call for his head too instead of acknowledging that we don't have the quality to go toe to toe with the top squads yet.
I'm happy that our very young team reached the KO stage and count this as a good showing.Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Going in to the WC, the Round of 16 was as far as I expected the US to go. I wasn't going to be stunned if they didn't get out of their group but I would have been shocked to see them in the Quarterfinals.
Therefore, I cannot honestly say that I'm disappointed or that they underperformed. They didn't play above the line or below it.
Plus Gregg sucks and Pulisic choked.Comment

I don't like Berhalter because his squad management and tactics are subpar. The lack of scoring and mistakes by the players is at least partly on him for his lineup choices and tactics/tactical adjustments.Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
A weak link at striker is partly the managers fault. After all, he chooses who to bring. Not saying we have a lot of options, but he didn't choose the best options (imo).

I don't think Berhalter is some great manager by any stretch. Our results are in line with our talent level and that puts him as an average manager. Not going to elevate the talent but also not mismanage to finish below expectations.
But making a comment like "That’s not to say we’d fare a lot better with a better manager...If he stays we’ll waste the next WC cycle" doesn't make a lick of sense to me.
If the national team feels there is a better candidate for the job then by all means make the change. But making a change just for the sake of making a change? Nah that ain't it.Comment

Re: FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022
Can’t front, I do feel like the whole blaming the manager thing is low hanging fruit for folks to easily reach and grab for, especially for this team.
It’d be one thing if they were this uber-talented squad with tons of young good/elite talent like other countries have and they were a good manager away from making a run, but they’re not.#RespectTheCultureComment
