Why isn't it? I could see certain players being picked on. There are plenty of players who are terrified of that moment, and would rather do anything in the world than step up to the spot.

Spain v Portugal would have been an incredible matchup leading up to England v France. As it stands now, what a story being written by Morocco... a masterful effort on defense. It will take a similar effort to get them through on Saturday.

On the other side, we are inching closer to the highly anticipated Argentina/Brazil semifinal.

Brazil in a walkover if that is the matchup.

It kind of is though tbh.

Penalties are heavily in favor of the kicker, but there are players that make it look easier than it is, even Messi doesn't have a great record for penalties.

All the pressure is on the kicker, there are plenty of players who would get targeted for fouls because they are not pk specialists.

Consider this. Perhaps free throws are easier than penalty kicks even statistically (forget the pressure).

NBA FT% is usually around 73% with a wide variety of players taking them.

PKs are around 75.5% (I think I read 78% in Europe's top 5 leagues) and that is with only the best players taking them.

What would PK conversion rates dip to (or would they, necessarily) if teams weren't choosing their kick takers? [emoji848]

EDIT: in looking up the success rate of technical free throws (the closest thing in basketball to a PK because you choose the shooter) I found that the success rate is around 79.2%. Interesting. I would guess most people would think PKs are converted at a higher rate.

Tifo Football did a great (short) video about improving penalty shootouts:
              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BFyYGEifQt4" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The AGD concept is intriguing and I'd like to see a domestic league try it honestly.

That 2014 team was badddd. They brought the entire 2010 South Africa team but forgot that they were all old by then.

That would be a fun experiment to watch but even if the rate dipped to 50%....that's still a hell of a shot. Fbref has the xG of a PK at .79. That's relatively close to what steelerfan said so it's safe to assume the xG would drop to ~.55-.6 xG. But who knows, if managers know that whoever gets fouled in the box will have to take it they'll probably have more players take em in training.

I'd be down to watch a few matches with that rule though lol.

The 2014 Spanish team while older had more talent than the current team by far. Morata is your go to guy? You got no chance.

No surprise that Luis Enrique was effectively sacked (non-renewed).

Morata was actually really good this tournament and should have started. Seeing them send in crosses to Asensio/Olmo/Torres was comical.

But they aren't worth the same. A converted technical free throw accounts for less than 1% of a team's total points. A converted PK counts for just a wee bit more.

The conversion rate for PKs would drop significantly, but I doubt the number taken would increase by the same ratio. I don't think we'd be seeing a hack-a-Mahrez anytime soon.
