It’s May of 2021. Chelsea has just beaten Man City in the Champions League final after ousting Frank Lampard in favor of Thomas Tuchel. BTW, they also lost two cup finals that went to pens at 0-0.

It’s April of 2023. Frank Lampard is managing the team in a 2-0 home loss to Brentford and Chelsea sit in 11th place. They never even came close to sniffing a trophy this season.

Imagine trying to explain everything that happened in that gap to your Chelsea-supporting friend who was in a coma during this time.

If it’s a Chelsea fan my age there’s a decent chance they won’t be completely surprised by that

I know it's the way things go now, with narrative build-up and a 'main event' feeling but this was not at all like the game at the Emirates, or the lead up to it. I think if you look at that game objectively, Arsenal were walking right into a proper walloping (sane Arsenal supporters I spoke to agreed).

No Saliba, Xhaka and Partey not fully fit (and showing it), Saka and Martinelli absolutely exhausted due to the minutes and how they've played, and Jesus playing well, but very much not yet in form. Combine that with Arteta unwilling to make changes, and City being...City, this was always going to be the result. Arsenal didn't stand a chance today, not only man to man out there, but just comparing the overall mentality of both teams currently (one in form, one hanging on by a thread).

I think Arsenals recent form has had a big impact on the players mentally, they just weren’t at all up for this game today.

I agree though I think anyone that paid attention to arsenal in the last few weeks knew this was coming.

There has been a lot of talk the last...month or so whether or not they could mentally and emotionally continue as they've had given how they've gotten results. It was always going to catch up to them. I just don't think you can win a league while relying on that much...emotional output in results when the team that's chasing you plays like a machine.

Thankfully, I think the club very much recognizes that in order to more beyond the CL group stage, and still compete in the league next season, several additions are still needed to this squad.

I predicted 5-1 beforehand, so they did a little better than I thought they would.

Arsenal missed their chance to make this match not have as much of an impact. Everyone knew they weren't getting a result today.

And yes, Arsenal needs to add. And tbh even if they do, this could easily end up being the closest they get to winning a title in the current state of the league. (and yes, they can still win it as unlikely as it seems at the moment)

Oh, I think this was our shot and that's it. Hoping something insane happens, but the fixtures don't fill me with hope. Yes, City still play Brighton...but so do we, hahaha.

As for next season, United will eventually be bought by a state, Newcastle will only get better, on and on, even further down the table.

We need to add just to make our CL trip last more than one season, but even that will once again be difficult.

No, long may he be employed while other former players with little experience continue to outshine him in the country (Arteta, Kompany), further driving English pundits mad.

One of the WORST Chelsea lineups/setups I have seen in my 20yrs of supporting this club lol. A front 3 of Sterling/Gallagher/Kante. Who’s going to score a goal from that group?

Credit to Kante because he might be our best RW’er [emoji2363]. As soon as he put some actual attackers on in the 2nd half we actually looked like we could score. The crazy part is that Brentford we’re pretty bad and we still lost at home.

                      Season can’t end soon enough

I don’t see the problem here. Deserves a 5-year extension.

Maybe we could interest someone in bringing Phil Neville to the Premier League as well.

I need *checks notes* Everton and Spurs to win today.

                            Great. Fantastic.

Had no idea that Villa was 5th in the league til I saw the standings just now.

Only time Everton wins is if it's to save them from relegation at the last moment.
