They didn't struggle last year, but that's in part because Ronaldo scored so many goals for them and they were lucky to get timely goals from other players...they need a striker because they lack depth there and secondly, the strikers they have now are not young enough (Ole), talented enough (smith), or tough enough (Saha), to opposite of Rooney on a consistent basis. Eto'o, Berbatov would be great additions to the squad

Re: The Transfer Thread
As mentioned, the players like Rooney and esp Ronaldo got much better and thus the better goalscoring.
ManU still lacks a world-class striker which they sorely need to compete on the Euro stage.
ManU will do well as usual in the Premier League but in Euro competitions, they almost always fall flat.
A top class striker will make ManU much more potent and open up even more scoring for the other players.
So one game means they're a bad scoring team? What about the three they scored on Milan the match before, or the SEVEN they scored against Roma. What about the fact that only scored 58 and 72 goals in Ruud's last two seasons there but 83 this year. Or how they were booted out of the Champions League last year in the group stage with only 3 goals in 6 matches, but this year they made the semifinals without him.
I watched 90% of all the Man Utd matches, not just the ones on TV, and they did not miss him at all. Im actually a Ruud fan but and he doesn't fit the way they play anymore. They need a more versatile forward, who's faster, passes well, and can dribble past defenders. Like Louis Saha but more consistent and much less injury prone.Comment

Re: The Transfer Thread
As a whole, I agree - United were a better team without Ruud this year, but that's because Ronaldo got better, Scholes and Giggs were healthy, and the fact that the team in general was more talented than the team Ruud had before he left. Ruud was fantastic for United, but he wasn't nearly as prolific as he was earlier when Beckham was there to feed him the crosses. Ruud had a solid year at Madrid and while United had a great season too, they do need another finisher because other than Rooney, their strikers are mediocreComment

Re: The Transfer Thread
Sigh... this is because Ronaldo, Rooney all got much better.
They werent as good when Ruud was there.
Ronaldo totally blossomed this season.
Ruud is still an excellent striker, leading the Spanish League with 25 goals.
Man.Utd needs a striker like Ruud, able to bag more than 20 goals per season.
Add the striker onto a team with Ronaldo, Rooney and you get a very potent strike force.
If Ruud was the top class striker Man Utd need to do well in Champions League, how come they never progressed past the quarterfinals with him on the team. Im not arguing that signing another striker wouldn't help the team, Im arguing against your intial point that Man Utd have been playing worse since Ruud left.Comment

Re: The Transfer Thread
I don't think we're gonna change each other minds on this. I'll just end with this point. It wasn't a coincidence much of the team played better last year. Some strikers can create for themselves and their teammates, others have a deadly eye for the goal but don't get many assists. It depends on your teams system how helpful each one would be.
Man Utd played better in a system where their forwards change be somewhat interchangable with the attacking midfielders, making it harder for the defense to track players. Other teams play better with a traditional target forward.-University of Illinois Class of '03-

Re: The Transfer Thread
You have to be pretty good to score 37 goals in two season on a crap team like Charlton. Just hope his knees hold up. Does this mean Defoe is gone?-University of Illinois Class of '03-
