16.56 Tony Mowbray has played down reports that West Bromwich Albion have made an offer for Bolton Wanderers defender Abdoulaye Meite. Hull City are interested in Meite, but are unwilling to pay the £3million asking price.

17.08 Stoke City have smashed their transfer record to sign Dave Kitson from Reading in a £5.5million deal. The striker has signed a three-year contract at Stoke to become the club's first signing of the summer.

New friggin manager is gonna tear that place apart. Stupid move. Sure why not get rid of one of the better keepers in the league? I now officially hate Paul Ince.

Edit: Ok I now see he asked for an out, but still...somethings going on there that Bad Brad doesn't want to be a part of, nor Bentley.

17.24 England keeper Scott Carson says it took 'three or four days' to decide on a move to West Bromwich Albion over Stoke City. Carson has signed a four-year contract at the Hawthorns after joining for a fee of £3.25million.

17.30 Marseille manager Eric Gerets has vowed to 'fight' to retain the services of striker Djibril Cisse. The former Liverpool forward has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Gerets admitting he would allow Cisse to go for 'personal reasons'.

Aston Villa closing in on Brad Friedel

In an apparent attempt to secure a monopoly on all top American goalkeepers named Brad, Aston Villa is closing in on a $5 million move for former U.S. national team goalkeeper and Blackburn star Brad Friedel.

Friedel is looking to leave Blackburn after long-time manager Mark Hughes left Ewood Park and Villa is in the lead to secure his services. Some reports have called the deal already done, but conflicting reports say the deal is not yet complete.

With a Friedel to Villa move looking like a strong possibility, it will set up an interesting situation for goalkeeper Brad Guzan. While some folks in the United States might have thought Guzan was heading to Aston Villa to start, it is clear that the Villains are looking for a veteran goalkeeper to step in and start, as well as to groom Guzan for the eventual starting role.

There may be no more perfect player to do that than Friedel, who like Guzan, played in MLS and can help with the transition to the European game. Friedel is also 37 years old and winding down an impressive European career. The ideal scenario would be to have Guzan serve a two-year apprenticeship under Friedel before taking the starting job (with Friedel possibly returning to MLS). Between events such as Carling Cup and early rounds of the FA Cup, as well as potential reserve games, Guzan would have a chance to see playing time even if Friedel continues his remarkable streak of 175 consecutive EPL starts.

Sounds like an ideal setup for Brad the Younger to adapt to the English game. I had no idea Friedel had that many consecutive starts. Impressive...

What's also impressive is that I finally posted in this thread without mentioning Ars... oops, nevermind.

17.45 Blackpool have completed the signing of Liverpool youngster Adam Hammill on a six-month loan deal.

18.15 Aidy Boothroyd believes Watford defender Danny Sh*ttu's move to Rangers could still go through. Sh*ttu has been unable to agree personal terms on a switch to Ibrox.

I have to admit it would be a win/win to have Friedel come in and mentor. He's a such a veteran that he would have to be a comforting influence on Guzan; I couldn't think of a better person to help you get settled.

I'm still mystified at him wanting to leave tho. He's a god at Ewood and the fans love him. I know there's rumors that Blackburn is for sale, so maybe between that and Hughes leaving he decided it was time as well. Which is weird because he just signed a 2 year extension this spring.

It still could be that he goes to ManC tho. I know he lives in Manchester so I'm sure that would be attractive as well as his old boss now the manager there.

                  Spurs complain over duo

The best sports coverage from around the world, covering: Football, Cricket, Golf, Rugby, WWE, Boxing, Tennis and much more.

Liverpool and Manchester United have been reported to the Premier League by Tottenham Hotspur following their respective interest in Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

Spurs are unhappy with the conduct of their top-flight rivals following speculation linking Keane with a move to Anfield, and Berbatov with a switch to Old Trafford.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez has expressed his interest in Keane, while United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of his optimism of concluding a deal for Berbatov.

However, Spurs have criticised the two clubs, with chairman Daniel Levy feeling they have to take the matter up with the Premier League.

                  Sheer arrogance
"Today's public comments by Manchester United's manager, announcing that he has made an offer for Dimitar and is confident that the deal will go through with time working in their favour, is a blatant example of sheer arrogance and interference with one of our players," said Levy in a statement on the club's official website.

"It is also probably one of the worst offences by any manager in the Premier League to date and is unbelievably hypocritical given his recent comments in respect of Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid.

"This comes after a series of events, dating back to last summer, which have shown Manchester United to be in breach of Premier League (PL) rules. As a result, we have today made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Manchester United.

"Benitez made similar comments in respect of Robbie recently and we made an official complaint to the PL about the conduct of Liverpool earlier this week.

"The behaviour of both clubs has been disgraceful. We told both clubs very early on that we had no interest in selling Robbie or Dimitar, respectively, and that they should refrain from pursuing the player. Both clubs arrogantly chose to ignore this request and we now have evidence that both clubs have systematically been working to prise the players away from us, outside of PL rules of conduct.

                  Negative influence
"Our subsequent position has been severely compromised by both clubs making their intentions widely known and indeed making contact with the players and their agents, without the club's permission.

"I have absolutely no wish to sell either player and to date we have not accepted any offer for either. However, when a player's head is turned and their commitment is absent, particularly when they occupy key positions such as that of striker, they become a negative influence in a team dressing room in which they were once a positive addition and influence.

"This is the situation we now have on our hands, with both Dimitar and Robbie having made it clear that they wish to leave for Manchester Utd and Liverpool respectively.

"Irrespective of the outcome and futures of Robbie and Dimitar, we are continuing to seek to bring in quality, talented players for the future, who want to play in a Spurs shirt."

Levy's trying to get the fans on side as he knows both of these transfers are about to go thru

                        Not happening.

                        1. Milan isn't in financial trouble. They're just cheap as hell.

                        2. The media see Ronaldinho go to Milan and it made their ears perk up to go rumor mongering about Kaka once again.

I'm not saying it's happening, I just love the rumors. Plus, Milan is overloaded with midfield players at this point, I think most would agree. I don't think it's too easy to dismiss it, especially now that Milan are a UEFA Cup team, not a CL team.

I don't think it's going to happen, but the speculation is always interesting.

Don't go buying the snazzy new Chelsea black uniform with Kaka on it just yet.AC Milan insists Kaka is not for sale. What a surprise. This either means the reports were complete fiction (possible), a planted story by Kaka, who wants to leave (possible) or Milan slowing things down until it can secure a deal with Arsenal for Adebayor so they have something to show irate fans when the deal does go down (very possible).

Does it actually make sense? Perhaps now more than ever. Why? Well AC Milan is having financial trouble, which apparently didn't stop the soon-to-be UEFA Cup participants from buying Ronaldinho for $30 million this past week. Milan is also overloaded with midfielders and could certainly use a striker. Selling Kaka would not only help AC Milan afford a forward (Emmanuel Adebayor anybody?) while also easing some of the financial strife at the club.

I'm still wondering where this financial trouble thing is coming from.

And where is Milan overloaded with midfielders? If you are supposedly overloaded with midfielders, you get rid of the over-the-hill bastards like Ambrosini and Emerson. Not Kaka...one of the three best players in the world!!!

And didn't Milan win the Champions League just last year? And it's not like they were in the relegation zone in Serie A. They just missed the 4th spot for the CL.

Yeah, one of the most successful and prestigious clubs in football buys up Flamini, Zambrotta and Ronaldinho...and that would make me want to leave. No hope in winning a scudetto and getting back into the CL, I guess.

Sorry, just ranting the media in Europe are a bunch of nitwits.

Pure speculation, my friend, that is what makes it interesting.

As for Kaka leaving, I don't think it's as easy to say he wouldn't leave because he has a chance to win. Players leave clubs all the time for reasons that may not seem right to us.

As I said before, I don't see it happening, but strange things happen in the world of football.
