PRESS RELEASE

Canucks name Edler team captain
VANCOUVER, BC - The Vancouver Canucks have named defenceman Alexander Edler as the team's 13th captain in franchise history, ahead of tonight's game against the Boston Bruins.

The 32-year-old Sweden native is in his 13th season with the Canucks and proceeds Henrik Sedin, who served as Vancouver's captain from 2010 until his retirement in 2018.

"Alex has been here for a while and has 10-plus season under his belt," said Canucks General Manager Nolan Reid. "With the youth here in Vancouver, Alex is a perfect choice as our leader on and off the ice."

It was also announced that forward Loui Eriksson will serve as a full-time alternate captain, as forwards Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi will rotate the second 'A'.

"We have a pretty diverse dressing room age-wise," said Reid. "There are already some young guys who are ready to take that next step and I really think it will help with the overall development here in Vancouver."

Edler was wearing the 'C' at the start of the year but was only interim until an official announcement was made.

"It's a great honour," said Edler. "To be a captain in the NHL is obviously rewarding but I'm ready to take on the new responsibility"

The Vancouver Canucks (1-6-0) host the Boston Bruins (5-1-1) tonight.

PRESS RELEASE

Canucks sign Tomasek

The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward David Tomasek to a three-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 at the NHL level, the team announced today.

Tomasek, 22, played with the HC Dynamo Paradubice of the Czech league where he had 11 goals and 27 points in 47 games last season. The Prague native was ranked 140th overall in 2017 by NHL Central Scouting but ending up going undrafted. The six-foot-two, 187-pound centreman played two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League from 2013-2015 with the Belleville Bulls where had scored 26 goals and 58 points in 119 career regular season games.

At the present time, Tomasek has been assigned to the Utica Comets.

General Manager Nolan Reid had the following to say:

"We would like to welcome David to the Canucks organization. This signing gives us depth at centre and also adds to our building blocks as we build for the future. With his age being an advantage to him, he can get some top minutes in the AHL and it will be interesting to see how he develops."

The Vancouver Canucks visit the Arizona Coyotes tonight.

Canucks sign Blujus

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Dylan Blujus to a one-year, two-way contract, the team announced today.

Blujus, 24, spent last season with the Jacksonville IceMen of the East Coast Hockey League where he had one goal and seven points in 21 games. The Buffalo, N.Y., native was originally drafted in the second round, 40th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012.

Canucks General Manager Nolan Reid confirmed that Blujus will be assigned to the Utica Comets.

"We signed Dylan to make our farm squad better and he right away becomes a top-4 guy in our farm system."

The Canucks now have the maximum of 50 players signed to contracts.

Canucks trade Biega, picks to Penguins

It was another busy day in the Vancouver Canucks head office, as the Canucks have traded defenceman Alex Biega along with two draft picks to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In return, the Canucks receive Pittsburgh's second-round pick in 2019. Vancouver also sends a fourth-round pick in 2020 and a third-round pick in 2024 to the Penguins.

Canucks General Manager Nolan Reid had the following to say:

"It was a numbers game for Biega, and unfortunately with the direction this organization is going, we felt we had to move forward without Biega in our plans. We wish him the very best of luck with the Penguins."

The Canucks return to action tomorrow against the Pittsbiurgh Penguins.
