Catching Rating for Defense?

Curious if the Catch rating affects a defenders ability to remain close to a receiver in any way or if the catch rating only takes effect once the receiver and defender are in the process of trying to catch/intercept the ball?

Trying to decide if I should sacrifice some speed or zone, man coverage ability in favor of catch ability..

I heard it help defenders in a jump ball scenario, I have done no testing of this so take this for what it is. However if you look at the top corners they all have catching in the 80s.

Re: Catching Rating for Defense?

Now this is the kind of thread talk I wish Madden community would get back to.
Deep Dives into Ratings!!!

It does cause some shifting/warping to the "catch-point" at the higher level.

The other thing is that with the new ball physics (making the football independent), there should be various catch animations that are rarely seen (bobbled etc...) if the mid-point of the rating is found (usually near 65).
- similar how lower Tackle ratings open up animations for ball carriers.

Catching counts as 1% when determining overall of corners and free safeties so it must matter to some extent. I have raised it and have not seen them getting a noticeable increase in interceptions so the difference is small.

Re: Catching Rating for Defense?

I have a safety that has a high catch rating and it seems to help him in jumping routes and taking better angles when making a play on the ball.

It is hard to tell exactly how much is due to awareness or catch, but his awareness is lower than the other safety who never does things like that.

Still though, all that is is triggering catch animations so no, I don't think it helps them stay closer. But because they are able to make a play on the ball from further away it has the same effect.

I think "plays ball in the air" trait being aggressive has them attacking the ball more. I would like to know if the aggresive/possesion/run after catch types do anything for defnders.

It makes them go for the int, but it is the catch rating that determines what animations trigger.

And high catch unlocks some very nice animations. That safety I spoke of has made diving interceptions against an out route when the pass was accurate and the WR was seemingly open. Both my corners have aggressive play ball but they typically only get interceptions on jump balls or when the pass is right at them.

It is the catch rating, pursuit also which leads them to the ball and then it comes down to their spectacular catch... yes take a look at CB J. Norman's spec catch rating you will be amazed.. it's at like 82 so yes that all plays a factor into the interception.
