Honestly, I would prefer the screen from the old Maddens from the PS2 days, or Madden 10 and 11. I understand your point, but like I said, this current menu system is not as old as you are making it out to be.

I am curious, what do you want to the menu to look like? What additional information would you like to see displayed?
- Standings
- League News (Not just a tweet about alternate uniforms)
1. Big roster moves
2. Big retirements
3. Draft news that actually effects the draft
4. League injuries
5. Anything important to the NFL
- ESPN Magazine Cover
- Weekly wrap-up show
- Stat Leaders
- Schedule showing future opponents/ previous games played
- Weekly game calendar
- Championship banners for my team
- Approval rating for team/ coach
- Information on my upcoming opponent
1. Best Players
2. Team Stats
3. Injuries
4. Score predictions
5. Team ratings/ league standings (i.e. #3 run defense, #4 pass offense)
- Power Rankings

These are just ideas I can rattle off the top of my head. I am sure if myself, or some who gets paid to come up with these ideas sits down and thinks about it, they could come up with better ideas.

Re: What week is it?

There's redundancy here, but I'm ok with it. Some people loudly complain about white space or what they perceive as wasted space, but white space can help direct a user's next action, and user testing validates that views with too much information crammed in can be bewildering, and users don't mind navigating multiple views as long as the actions are clear.

While I don't know if EA does a lot of UX testing with their interfaces, because a lot of them are lacking and inconsistent, white space in UI design isn't necessarily a bad thing. The 'landing screen' design for EA's games, IMO, isn't bad. I find the home screen of Madden and MUT much more bewildering than CFM. The MUT layout seems incoherent to me.
