It's simply that there isn't a one size fits all established or any standard. LG chooses to retain specular highlight detail over max peak brightness.

There's nothing wrong with that and in some situations is a "better choice."

OLEDs peak brightness is plenty especially in typical night time viewing condition's. Combined with it's perfect black luminance it's a marvelous experience.

The fact that we can't choose to calibrate HDR on this particular title is problematic. Several other games allow us to and they do it well.

I disagree. You're right that there's nothing wrong with choosing specular highlight detail over APL, but the way in which LG does this is unintelligent. They tone map based on the mastering display max brightness. So if the content in question is mastered on a 4000 nit display, but the actual peak brightness of the content (MaxCLL) is only 600 nits, then the TV will act as if the peak brightness is 4000 nits, even though in reality it shouldn't tone map at all, since the TV'S peak brightness is actually greater than 600 nits (the actual peak brightness of the content.) So the TV will then compress the entire 4000 nit range into whatever the TV supports (750 nits) and it will compress the MaxCLL (600 nits) by the same factor. Thus, everything will appear to be much dimmer than intended.

The better method would be to tone map based on the MaxCLL itself.

I would actually blame the game dev on this one. There’s no universal HDR standard as far as tv nits. Most higher end TVs are usually over 1000nits and the 2017 and newer OLED aren’t too far off 1000 nits. I hear what you say about tone mapping. I don’t see why the madden devs wouldn’t just add this in and make it easier for everyone.

Yeah exactly there's no established standard approach to tone mapping. Hopefully we can get a calibration option.

Just because there's no established standard for tone mapping, doesn't mean certain methods aren't worse than others. LG's method makes absolutely no sense, as I explained. There are better ways to retain specular highlight detail. They addressed it by adding Active HDR on their 2017 and later models, but I think only the 2018 models can utilize this in game mode.

But yes, an in-game HDR option would help the 2017 and earlier LG sets.

The reason tone mapping is so important is because some content is mastered at much higher peak brightness than is currently supported by displays. Some games are mastered at 10,000 nits, even if the actual peak brightness of the game is well below that, or if it only reaches that level of brightness for a split second. Imagine the havoc that wreaks on LG OLEDs, given the fact that they use that 10,000 nit number as the peak brightness when tone mapping.

This has to be on game developers because every other game looks great in HDR besides Madden.

HDR on Madden looks fantastic on my set up, though.
