Differences between franchise rosters and play now rosters

I kept seeing mentions of a "return man" superstar ability on the Bills' Andre Roberts, which is the team I primarily use in H2H mode. But he doesn't have any abilities when I load a game in the play now modes. I loaded up a franchise with the same roster (I confirmed it was the same roster) and in Competitive mode, and there seem to be a number of changes like that.

Stefon Diggs in Play Now: Rac Em Up, Juke Box, Deep In Elite, and Grab N Go
Stefon Diggs in Franchise: Rac Em Up, Juke Box, Mid In Elite

Tre White in Play Now: Shutdown, Pick Artist, Acrobat, Deep Out Zone KO
Tre White in Franchise: Shutdown, Acrobat, Medium Route KO

Micah Hyde: Same in both

Andre Roberts in Play Now: No abilities
Andre Roberts in Franchise: Return Man

I haven't checked any other teams yet, is this a bug or do they intentionally have separate abilities for the two modes?

I know that players that aren't QB can only have a maximum of 2 abilities inside franchise. The other issues might be bugs.

CFM uses the player ratings to establish Player Archetypes, where as Play Now doesn’t.

There are other mechanisms that only operate inside CFM as well.
- Morale
- Age Regression

I get that they will diverge from reality as the franchise advances, but I'm saying they are different right out of the gate. Oneamongthefence's explanation makes some sense and I could see if they just dropped one, but they changed how they play significantly. White turns into a man corner, Diggs into a mid range threat rather than a deep one, and Roberts becomes useful.

Yes right out the gate CFM applies calculations (those things I noted) at the start of CFM, that’s why the OVR’s and some ratings (once age regression, Scheme calc are applied) are either higher or lower.

It's definitely a design decision that non QBs only have two Superstar Abilities max in Franchise, and that they made a conscious choice to assign specific Superstar abilities to the players in Franchise that have them with gameplay balance as the rationale.
