Hard hits don't happen THAT often. Yeah, they may show the top 10 hits on ESPN, but out of 16 games, that's an average of less than 1 per game. Besides, Madden should focus on "another" type of tackling that has already been beaten to death. It sounds like "bang spackling". Lol.

Wonderful post.

This would be a HUGE implementation towards a sim-like game. The hit stick and truck stick are complete cheese. As you said, the hit stick should be replaced by a tackle stick and the big hit should be factored with speed, weight, and tackle ability in mind. This hit stick shouldn't be flattening people 2 times an offensive possession ... big hits do not happen that much.

The truck stick should be replaced with a lower-the-shoulder button. Never has there been a time when a running back/full back/tight end/wide receiver has ever received "extra" momentum the moment before contact to knock the defender on his back. That's just ridiculously unrealistic and is just not fun to do after the 45th time in a game.

With all of that in mind I really do hope that Madden 10 has a sound gang tackling system. There is nothing like being able to be the third person to the ball and STILL get on to the play. Heck, there is nothing like being able to be the SECOND person to the ball and still get in on the tackle. Overall, I just hate that animations (and not momentum and weight) give people yards. I hate big nose tackles being pushed back by small running backs on goaline situations. It absolutely takes the fun away from the game.. I really hope Madden is good this year.

I like the hitstick and highlight stick I just wish it would give a regular animation sometimes. I haven't had a problem with the hitstick people tend to miss a lot when they try it on me and then they give up a bigger play. The highlight well it's a highlight ever time really.

I couldnt agree MORE. Lose the HITSTICK/TRUCK STICK etc altogether. Like many have said truly BIG hits happen way less than many think. Tackles/Big Hits attributes and momentum should be the ONLY factors that decide if a BIG hit/Fumble should happen.

Keep the Hit Stick for the Rookie/Pro settings and let the casuals/arcade crowd enjoy. I dont think the hardcore crowd would even miss it. I know i wouldnt.

On expanding this idea: I don't like generalizations of this never happens here or there. Instead, what I'd like to see is the events occuring when they are possible, not when they aren't. Got a player that dances in the backfield ALL GAME? In a situation like that, big hits should happen ALL GAME!

It comes down to a balance of simulating what we see on TV and real football. In the NFL that player will be aware and put more effort into avoiding the big hit and coaches may not make that call again. In a video game that possible event could repeatedly occur and we don't want to restrict that because the probability of seeing it more often in real life is less. We just want the hits to be possible in those rare moments they are, not every point of contact.

But if the situation came up over and over, you would get the big hits because of everything mentioned and not just because your right thumb is really quick. I agree in rare moments you need big hits, but I don't consider every play rare. I believe it would also make the user play proper defense and not save himself with a flick of his right thumb to hit stick my runner from behind because he didn't read the play right or over pursued.

This game really needs a tackling button. I hate running into the play and not being able to time my tackle without diving or hit-sticking.

Not necessarily. You can leave a random element to the game. Maybe 50% of the time on average the hit lands in the right situation. Maybe make it VERY precise and difficult so natural user error balances the probability out.
