I love the guess pitch option (especially 1/6) even if it isn't realistic. I don't think it needs to be changed or eliminated.

There are options to not use it both online and offline so for those who don't like it then those options are your best bet.

I agree, but what's the big deal? In my experience both hitting and pitching online if a ball is over the plate, 95% of the time it's a safe hit.

Re: Guess what? Guess pitch is unrealistic!

[quote=Gagnon39;2039286637]Okay, I played baseball my whole life, I watch baseball all the time, I coach high school baseball, so I completely understand that making an "educated" guess at what kind of pitch may be coming is part of the game. However the entire guess pitch option in MLB 09 is completely unrealistic. There should not be a guess pitch option (I know that we can just "not use it" offline, but what about online). It is stupid that someone can get an extra boost by guessing where the pitch will be thrown. What's worse is that on each pitch you have a 25% chance of getting the location right and since no one ever throws high pitches you can bump that up to about 33%.

I'm sorry, but you are completely wrong thinking that in real baseball, you don't get a "bonus" for guessing the correct pitch/location.

I too have played baseball my entire life, through college and still do. I myself have always been a "reaction" hitter, where I tell myself to look for a certain pitch, but if I don't get it, I'll adjust accordingly either by laying off, or adjust to whatever the new pitch is. However, I am in the very, very, very small minority of players who aren't "guess" hitters, because the higher up you get, it becomes almost impossible to react to 90 mph sliders.

Ted Williams, the greatest hitter of all time, professed countless times that he was a guess hitter. If he guessed right, he even said himself, 9 times out of 10, he would smoke it. Look how that turned out for him.

It's all about working the count, and looking for a certain pitch in a certain location, in a certain count. Many times you will look absolutely foolish (watch Torii Hunter swing at a slider low and away and you'll understand), but when you guess slider inside, that thing will not stay in the ballpark.

Re: Guess what? Guess pitch is unrealistic!

these threads are always entertaining. People say, well its other people's game so they can play how they want, but still take the time to point out how they are somehow "superior" to those who use it.

But like someone else stated, when people talk about this feature and are against it, they always fail to mention the penalties of guessing wrong.

Re: Guess what? Guess pitch is unrealistic!

All you ball players think back to some of the best pitchers you ever faced....you know the guys w/ 90+mph heat w/ a 70-80ish mph changeup. 0-0 count what are you looking for? Fastball right? well how foolish did you look when that changeup floated slowly by you while you finished your swing. I don't care how good of a hitter you are/were, if you've played your whole life it's happened more times than you can count.

Anyway, in a video game if you have a quick enough reaction you can press a button or two and hit that changeup the same exact distance and on a rope as you could if you were looking for a fastball and got it.

In real life, even if you made the adjustment to the changeup chances are you would not hit the ball as hard as if you had gotten the fastball you were "guessing" on.

I certainly see why the bonus is there for guessing right, and the negatives for guessing wrong. To be realistic you should play w/ the no feedback option, because in real life there is no "ding" letting you know you guessed right.

That said, like everyone agree's it's an option and for people to use or not use as they most enjoy.

Re: Guess what? Guess pitch is unrealistic!

I have a question. How is using guess pitch any different then altering sliders when it comes to realism?

Curious, for those of you who can't help bashing Guess Pitch..... in MVP 05, the ball was colored different colors for fastball, breaking ball, change up. Was that cheating too? I'm just searching for any type of logic in your argument.
I don't use either but I think it is unfair to compare these two things. The MVP batters eye at least was on the periphery of making sense. Good hitters can pick up various things by the spin of the ball. This still probably gave too much of an advantage but at least it was based on a good thought. Guess pitch is simply a MLB The Show option. It has nothing to do with "real" baseball. A better implementation would be 1) guess pitch 2) get no feedback right or wrong 3) if you guessed correctly, you're sitting on the pitch and get a nice bonus...if wrong, you make little or no contact. You are rewarded if you guess a pitch correctly IRL but the pitcher doesn't say "you got me...here comes a fastball." You're simply sitting on the ball and drive it.

I don't have any qualms either way with how people play but I see definite differences in this comparison.
