Until I get a strike, my approach is the same. Look for one pitch in one location. Get it swing, don't take.

I do not use guess pitch. I, myself, look for a certain pitch in a certain location.

Re: 1st pitch?

I take the first pitch all the time, the one thing that annoys me is the CPU actually starts the game with a off speed pitch which almost no pitcher does in baseball. I've never seen that out the 15 years of baseball that I've seen. My guess if I missed it is Bronson Arroyo being a pitcher that might have possibly thrown a off speed pitch as the first pitch of the game.

I left out Knuckle ballers, I apologize. I've only seen Knuckle ballers throw it of course, even though their knuckle balls they throw is pretty much their fastball.

In my head I tell myself I'm going to take at least two pitches because most of the time the count will be 2-0 or 1-1. Very rarely does a pitcher throw two strikes in the beginning of an at bat back to back, though Mark Buehrle did yesterday a few times.

No guess pitch and more often than not, I take a pitch unless I see a pattern of fat strikes on the first pitch.

Re: 1st pitch?

About 6 years ago someone in the forum gave some great advice about determining a pitcher's release point so you could track the ball better. At the time this advice revolutionized my hitting in The Show.

Since then, I always take the first pitch the first time seeing a pitcher. This way I get his release point. The second or third time I see the same pitcher I'm looking for a pitch to drive from the first pitch on.

I use zone hitting, and usually put the marker in the general area where I'm looking for a pitch to attack. If the pitch isn't there, I don't swing. If I get to a two strike count I go into more of a protect mode.

I wish I could remember the name of the person who gave the advice about looking for the release point. Whoever you are, thanks!
