Tony is not just "one fighter" any more than Khabib is just "one fighter".
Lightweight is Connor's natural weightclass, and as an Ex champ (beating Eddie Alvarez in impressive fashion) means he should be up there in the rankings, especially with his record of beating Jose Aldo, Max Holloway, and Dustin Poirier. Of course he got the shot because he brings in the big money, but it's not that far off the mark. (Until of course now that he's lost to Khabib. rematch? no thanks.).
Fights like Brock vs DC, or Cejudo vs TJ are more insane in my eyes.
I could sit down and write out a list of fighters in different weightclasses that have been "screwed over" by being in a queue for too long. As well as fighters who clearly were pushed through for marketability reasons alone. Tony just seemed like the most recent and most egregious case. The man is on a 11 win streak in the most packed division in the world. With wins over ex champions like Pettis, RDA, and monsters like Kevin Lee, and Barbosa.
The case is a little more nuanced however, they've been trying to book Khabib vs Tony forever, but that also ads to my point, everytime that fight falls out the Lightweight queue gets more packed, exacerbating the problem.
Now, I can understand not wanting more weightclasses, I feel ya. I think it's messy right now, especially with the interim bull going on, as well as champs going "full Conor" as soon as they get ahold of that belt.
We might just end up with another division held up by a diva champ, with yet another interim belt on the line. This seriously needs to stop.
That being said, The logjam at lightweight is a real thing, and WME is to blame, not Conor.
