It makes all the sense in the world. Why let DC beat contenders when he isnt going to fight for the belt as long as Cain has the belt? If he fights a top contender like Werdum, beats him and Cain wins too......who gets the next title shot? Miocic? Overeem?

If DC wins, he beats a high profile (not highly ranked) guy in Nelson and can drop to LHW or be in line for a HW shot if JDS wins. If Nelson wins, DC can still drop to LHW and Nelson gets his first win over a top 5 HW.

Its about making contenders and if DC refuses to fight Cain, you cant let him knock off other HW contenders.

A win over Nelson proves nothing. Guess that's my beef besides the fact that he's coming off a loss. I'm all about building contenders but by that logic you don't make this match.

Its not about proving anything though. Does anyone not think DC is a top contender? He has wins over Barnett, Silva and Mir. He is arguably the #2 or #3 HW contender in the world.

With Nelson, you have a fighter with a name who can put on an exciting fight.

Who else could he fight? DC wants to fight this fall. Struve is coming off a loss. Same with Hunt. Miocic has win but does beating him "prove" anything. Overeem and Browne are fighting in late August so they wont be available. And DC has wins over the other 3 fighters in the top 10.

Werdum is the only other person who is coming off a win, has a name and who is ranked where Cormier is and I listed earlier why that cant happen. If Cormier was willing to fight Cain, this wouldnt be an issue.

There really is nobody else at hw to fight except werdum. I wouldn't really want to see that anyway.

I wonder if dc cuts in line at lhw if Cain holds the belt.

Disappointed.

If there was a short list of guys I never want to see fight again, Nelson is in the Top 5.

Re: UFC 166 - Velasquez vs JDS 3

Well at least it is an interesting matchup. DC can't just take Nelson down and lay there or he could be submitted. He also has to be careful coming in for a takedown.

It all depends on which Nelson shows up though. If the Nelson from his last fight shows up, no way he wins. If a top conditioned, for him, Nelson shows up, then he has a chance.

The issue with having top guys fight to eliminate contenders is that you are eliminating 1 of your fighters every time you do it. Its not a problem if you have 8-10 guys who are near the top, but in the heavyweight division, you don't have that. You only have 2-3 people who have won enough to deserve a shot. If Cain keeps winning that number goes down as you don't want a lot of immediate rematches. Heavyweight can't afford to have the top guys fight right now unless it is for the belt.
