Re: RedLogic's HOF Slider set - Shot Stick Timing FG & FT's
Hey Red. Haven't posted in awhile cause I haven't been around much. Was able to sit down this afternoon and dive back into a franchise I'd started last week. In "honor" of Lebron getting to the finals (started it before the heat lost). I wanted to help the Cavs with their rebuilding process.
Even though I've had so many incredible games with these sliders, I have to resist the temptation to do write-ups on all of them because if I didn't stop myself, you'd have a full story complete with box score for every. single. game. That's how great these sliders are still treating me.
I had started to feel as though I got the hang of these and was worried I'd figured them out and they were going to be easy and I'd have to make a bunch of changes or find a new set. I'd gone on a 7 game winning streak, some of which were so decided that I'd just sim the rest of the game cause I was up by 20+ in the 3rd or 4th quarter.
I'd finally broken my own hot streak by losing twice in the span of four games. All 4 being very competitive, so I think I was just on fire/locked in. Which brings us to the 5th game, which ended just moments ago. My first actual played game, using my year 3 Cavs. There were a ton of off-season and draft day deals from the CPU. So as i do this write-up, keep in mind this is year 3 and a lot of the players on both my Cavs squad and the CPU's 76ers are new to the franchises, not a fantasy draft or anything.
First quarter was back and forth to an almost absurd (in a very good way) extent. After the quarter had ended, I went to gametrack and saw that the game had 13 lead changes in the first quarter, far and away the most I've ever had happen to me in that span. I ended up taking a small lead, 27-25 as the buzzer sounded.
The 2nd quarter was incredibly....quirky, I guess I'd call it. I had 7 combined "And 1" opportunities within the first 5 minutes of the second quarter, very bizarre. To that point, it was 31-31 and then I started getting all the And 1's, converting 5 out of 7. I ended up winning the quarter 32-21 to take a 59-46 lead into the half.
The third quarter began as some of my prior games had, with me going on a massive run to start the new half. I had outscored them 14-2 before they got composed. By the end of the quarter I was only trying to focus on defense because they were getting hot. I still ended up winning the quarter, 32-27 to go into the 4th up 91-73.
This is where things got interesting. As the 4th quarter started, I scored the first 6 points and extended the lead to 20+. I decided then it was okay to answer text messages during timeouts, read them during the game, answer my phone a few times and have a few quick convos, make plans for the evening, and have a cigarette.
A few of us have mentioned that you need to pay attention for the entire game, and that mental mistakes are what will make you lose with these sliders. Get taken off your game, or take yourself out of the game, and the CPU will absolutely come back. I've read it, I've said it, I've typed it, and learned the hard way. Apparently though, I still hadn't quite gotten the message.
After my 6 points, I didn't score for another 5 minutes. That's not to say the 76ers also didn't, though. No, quite the opposite, they scored plenty. By the time I called a timeout just 2:30 into the 4th, they had outscored me 21-6. Unbelievably, they tied the game at 102 with 1:33 remaining. I converted a ridiculous 3 point play with Wesley Johnson and felt good about my 3 point lead. They scored off a putback and it was 105-104. I nailed a 3 pointer with Derrick Williams to make it 108-104. Jamal Crawford (6ers) hit a beautiful stepback jumper to get them within 2. I called a play that I'd had success with for J.J. Hickson, who promptly lost the ball after an upfake, and the next thing I know Iggy has converted the layup ANNNND 1 (karmaaa!!!!). He makes the free throw and I go from being up by 20 something 8 minutes ago, to being down with less than 30 seconds to go, unbelievable. To my complete and utter astonishment, I call a play called 34 twist (great play, use it, power forward-low post-a little less than halfway down the list). I get the ball to Williams, no shot, pass to Hickson, he frickin loses it again!!! They score, and suddenly my 108-104 lead has turned into a 111-108 deficit. I use my last timeout, compose myself, and decide Hickson is too unreliable right now.
I go to Wes Johnson who is blocked on his layup attempt and just like that, it's over. I'm sitting there in a state of disbelief. As Kristic (6ers) throws the pass to Holiday to run out the clock, I tap the steal button in desperation and to my disbelief, make contact and steal the ball. Hickson, who at this point has icicles hanging from his name, is cutting to the basket so I give it to him and he puts up a little floater and yet again, for the third time in seemingly as many seconds, I'm in disbelief as it goes in. The 6ers call timeout and what happens next will be replaying in my head every single time I'm playing this game from here on out.
I put a ton of pressure on the inbounds pass, manually switching every time i saw someone get open and milliseconds later switching to someone else who'd gotten space. Brand throws the ball in, and Jrue Holiday can't hang onto it, he tries to catch it but tips it up and over him, right into the hands of Wes Johnson. There's about 5 seconds on the clock so I'm thinking I should run the floor with him, but Deandre Jordan, who was guarding the inbounds pass has gotten a step on everyone and is streaking down the floor, I throw it to him and he slams the ball in for a 112-111 lead with 2.6 seconds left. After the 6ers timeout, I"m pretty much having an anxiety attack. Jrue Holiday jacks up a 3 from a few feet beyond the 3 point line, it hits the back of the rim, bounces up, hits the left side of the rim, and falls to the side, harmlessly, my 112-111 lead turned into the final score and a win.
So, the lesson here is, don't be an idiot like me. Pay attention all game every game, or you will be the recipient of a comeback, and you may not be as lucky as I was to save the game.
Okay so really there's no lesson, it was just a crazy game and I had to share this with you guys. Especially you Red, you're the catalyst in all of this.
That was by far the most incredible comeback I've ever seen in this game. Obviously they didn't get the win, I was able to hang on, but the fact they took a lead after not leading since the 1st was pretty incredible. Not to mention they had a 20 point hill to climb with just 7:30 left in the game. I fell asleep at the wheel, texted, ate a bowl of cereal, and almost paid for it dearly. In the end though, it wound up being the best NBA 2k game I have ever had. So I just wanted to share this game recap with you and say thank you, you took the greatest sports game of all time and made it better.
I know this is a long read, this is more for the diehards or the people that are deciding whether or not to try the sliders. If game recaps aren't your thing, you didn't miss much. Just one of the many times I needed to say thank you to RedLogic for his ridiculously amazing sliders. The game ended awhile ago now, and I'm still sitting here sifting through all the stats, replays, etc. I just can't believe that game even happened.
