Re: Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Switch)

Got it yesterday. I first played it with the WiiU entry, and while I'm pretty terrible at it, I love the randomness and chaos of it all. My 10yo son is pumped for it, so we have a LOT of work ahead of us.

Same here. I have never been good at fighting games, but bought this one anyway. It is odd because I enjoy the game, but it am really bad at it.

Re: Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (Switch)

I'm not very good at them but I've always loved the smash series. Picked this up yesterday and I'm a little disappointed. The traditional smash aspect is still very good. If you ever liked the normal Smash for gene then you should enjoy that.

My disappointment comes with the single player story aspect, which is kind of terrible. In the wii versions you went through a lengthy campaign being forced to use different characters to advance through levels almost like it was a Mario Game. In this one the levels are just normal Smash fights pitting you against 1 or more cpu characters who have enhanced attributes (like they take less damage) or the stage has something like increased wind (that only affects you). As you complete each mission you collect these "spirits" that you can equip to make make your fighters stronger.

That aspect of it is kind of cool, but the results are kind of mixed. Certain spirit combinations make most fights kind of a joke while still some fights will take the difficulty up 20x without you expecting it. Also, the only time you really notice the effects of these equipped spirits is when it's something that gives you an item like a sword or let's you counteract the a stage effects (like immunity to wind).

Lastly, unlocking characters in this mode is painful. I guess even in the wii versions it was faster to unlock characters in the traditional smash mode, but this is ridiculous. In this story mode you start out with just 1 playable character (in the story mode). I invested the better part of 5 hours yesterday playing that mode and only unlocked 6 other characters.

Tip for unlocking characters.... If your doing the story mode, exit it every say 15-20 mins. You will get a challenge from a fighter. Then go back in and keep playing, and repeat.

Itll get them to challenge you. If you beat them they will unlock.

Playing the classic mode through will also unlock characters no matter the difficulty you play on.
