Customer 1 buys brand new game. Finishes game and sells it to GameStop.
Customer 2 goes into GameStop. Instead of opting for a brand new game he instead buys a pre-owned copy.

That is a lost sale as EA wants both of those customers to buy a brand new game.

Or thousands and thousands of other products. So why should software be different?

I don't think the resell industries for those are nearly as profitable or apparent as games especially as those forms themselves move into digital media as a means to combat that themselves.

Just because it happens doesn't mean businesses like it. It just means they haven't thought of a way to properly address it which is what EA and other gaming companies (along with other forms of media) have been doing as more and more things are put into digital formats. Its perfectly logical that a business would want to replace that used copy of their game on somebody's shelf with a new copy and boost their sales. I don't like it, but that's the way its going and I can't fault them for it.

Just because they want to make more money and want to do it, doesn't make it ethical or a fair business practice.

I actually like a lot of EA's games, it's just they treat consumers bad with their ridiculous DLC and season ticket crap. They also own a lot of franchises that I wish they didn't so more companies could make more games in those areas.
