2013-14 Italian Serie A Match Day #19 11 January 2014 Stadio Olimpico, Rome Roma 2-1 Genoa Scoring Summary 9' Gervinho - Rom 40' Adrian Stoian - Gen 57' Gervinho - Rom Torrid Genoa Halted By Determined Giallarossi Gervinho continues to work his magic in the Eternal City Pacey Ivorian Gervinho scored a goal in each half to lead hosts Roma to a convincing 2-1 victory over a rejuvenated Genoa side who had won six of their last seven games(in all competitions) while jumping from the relegation fight all the way to the cusp of the top ten. The visitors came into this match full of confidence and looked to quickly jump in front with some aggressive attacking tactics, but just nine minutes in those tactics worked against them when Roma's Miralem Pjanic intercepted a lazy pass by Daniele Portanova and instantly made the visitors pay, setting off a clinical counterattack that ended with Gervinho putting the hosts in front with a wicked shot from just inside the area. Undaunted, Genoa continued to play aggressively, and their tactics finally paid off right before halftime when a Luca Antonini cross found the head of a waiting Adrian Stoian who headed it home from close range to level the match at 1-1 heading into halftime. Adjustments made, the second half belonged to the hosts who took the lead in the 57th minute on Gervinho's second goal of the match and never looked back, holding Genoa without a shot for the final thirty minutes on their way to the 2-1 win.

2013-14 Coppa Italia Round Of 16 Match-Up 14 January 2014 Stadio Olimpico, Rome Roma 3-1 Chievo Verona Scoring Summary 14' Përparim Hetemaj - CV 21' Marquinho - Rom 54' Gianluca Caprari - Rom 80' Daniele De Rossi(Pen) - Rom Roma Recover To Advance In The Coppa Italia Roma players celebrate advancing to quarters of the Coppa Italia A rare goal from Chievo midfielder Përparim Hetemaj gave the visitors a shock 1-0 lead just fourteen minutes into this Coppa Italia round of 16 match-up, unfortunately however for Eugenio Corini's squad, the joy was short lived as Marquino put the hosts back on level footing just seven minutes later with a strike from 15 yards. Early in the second half it was 20 year old starlet Gianluca Caprari who took center stage, putting Roma ahead to stay with his first ever goal for the club. In the 80th minute, it was captain Daniele De Rossi, calmly converting from the spot to settle things for sure. With the win, the Giallarossi have earned the right to move into the quarterfinals where they'll face none other than five time Coppa Italia champions AC Milan at the San Siro.

2013-14 Italian Serie A Match Day #20 19 January 2014 Stadio Olimpico, Rome Roma 1-1 Livorno Scoring Summary 82' Adem Ljajic(Pen) - Rom 86' Luca Siligardi - Liv Siligardi Denies Roma With Late Equalizer How sweet it is for Luca Siligardi and his Livorno teammates Andrea Coda's 82nd minute hard slide tackle inside the area on the speedy Gervinho left the Ivorian lying in a heap on the turf, it also gave the hosts a golden opportunity to break the scoreless deadlock from the penalty spot, and when Adem Ljajic did exactly that just a few moments later it looked for all the world as if Rudi Garcia's men were going to win another, but just four minutes later the visitors answered back, leveling the match on a wonderful header by Luca Siligardi who just barely beat Roma keeper Morgan De Sanctis short side to make it 1-1, and although both clubs would each have a chance to win it late, neither one could capitalize, and the clubs deservedly shared the points here in the cold and rainy Capital City. As for Gervinho, Coda's tackle left the winger with a badly separated shoulder, he's expected to be out for at least the next two months.

2013-14 Italian Serie A Match Day #21 23 January 2014 Stadio Olimpico, Rome Roma 2-1 Sampdoria Scoring Summary 27' Adem Ljajic - Rom 38' Manolo Gabbiadini - Sam 57' Alessandro Florenzi - Rom Giallarossi Send Spiraling Sampdoria To 8th Straight Defeat Alessandro Florenzi scores the winner Alessandro Florenzi settled a frantic battle between two clubs at opposite ends of the table by alertly reaching a loose ball inside the opponent's penalty area and deftly slotting it under a diving Junior Costa, dooming visiting Sampdoria to their 8th straight league defeat by the score of 2-1 here at Stadio Olimpico. The victory moves Roma up to 3rd in the table with 42 points, but the day was not all good news, starting CB Mehdi Benatia rolled his ankle midway through the second half and had to be replaced, early word is that he'll be out for about 3 weeks with a sprained ankle. As for the visitors, the loss drops them to 5-2-14 on 17 points, just two clear of the dreaded drop zone.

2013-14 Italian Serie A Match Day #22 25 January 2014 Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, Verona Hellas Verona 0-1 Roma Scoring Summary 35' Francesco Totti - Rom Totti Wins It For Roma The captain does it again for Roma In the second of three games in five days, an exhausted and battered Roma squad limped into Verona and somehow escaped with all three points, defeating hosts Hellas Verona by the score of 1-0 here at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi. Making the difference as he's so often done during his legendary career, captain Francesco Totti alertly took advantage of a poor touch by Verona centre-half Domenico Maietta, deftly dispossessed him then quickly fired it past a stunned Rafael, giving the Giallarossi a gift 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime. In the second half, the hosts took full advantage of the weary visitors and besieged their goal for the majority of the time remaining, but a mixture of bad luck, poor finishing, and spectacular goal keeping combined to leave them wanting in the end, as Roma held on for the unlikely 1-0 victory.

Re: AS Roma: Hungry For Glory
2014 Winter Transfer Recap As their most recent run of games clearly showed, the Giallarossi were clearly in need of quality depth all over the pitch if they hope to play Champions League football next season, and thanks to some fine maneuvering during this year's winter mercato by manager Rudi Garcia and General Manager Walter Sabatini, the club was able to strengthen itself in several key areas without losing anything significant, and although the work is far from finished, Garcia has a deeper squad to choose from now as the club steams towards the run-in. Here's a rundown of the business done this winter: Incoming Players -17 year old striker Antonio Sanabria arrives from Barcelona's B squad for a fair price of €1,500,000. -25 year old Italian Left Back Danilo D'Ambrosio has been added to the squad from Torino for €1,600,000 -One of the two biggest additions to the club this winter, 21 year old German attacker Kevin Volland, who can play all three attacking positions, arrives from Hoffenheim at a cost of €10,000,000 -Another huge addition which will boost the midfield depth immensely is 19 year old Argentine starlet Leandro Paredes who arrives with great fanfare from Boca Juniors for a cost of €7,000,000 and 32 year old CB Nicolás Burdisso -Finally, taking Burdisso's spot on the CB rotation is 30 year old mountain of a man Antonio Amaya who moves over from Real Betis at a cut rate price of 1.5 million euros. Amaya had just six months remaining on his current deal, forcing Betis into making a move they so desperately wanted to avoid. Outgoing Players -Exciting 20 year old winger Gianluca Caprari heads to the Portuguese Primeira Liga on a short term loan deal with Vitória de Guimarães in a move geared to give the youngster some much needed playing time. -Used sparingly this season, 35 year old veteran keeper Júlio Sérgio will be making the move to Chievo Verona at season's end as a free agent. He will remain with Roma until then however -Finally, another player who's found himself on the outs this year is 32 year old CB Nicolas Burdisso. A member of the club since 2009 and a faithful servant to the shirt, Burdisso was granted his wish and will be heading home to Argentina to play once again for Boca Juniors, the club he made over 100 appearances for between 1999-2004. Transfers From Around Italy - Hoping to restore themselves to former glory, newly invested into Genoa have made two signings this winter, bringing in 23 year old highly rated winger Victor Ibarbo from Cagliari, and 27 year old defender Vedran Corluka from Lokomotiv Moscow, the two deals cost a combined €13,800,000 -Solidifying their defensive midfield, Fiorentina have acquired 24 year old Brazilian CDM Sandro from Tottenham Hotspur for a cool €14,000,000 -Becoming even more dangerous, Walter Mazzari's Inter squad have purchased prolific French strikers Karim Benzema from Real Madrid and Cyril Théréau from Chievo Verona for a combined €24,000,000 -Juventus did a bit of buying and selling this winter, losing 26 year old Chilean mid Arturo Vidal to Pep Guardiola's German juggernaut Bayern Munich for 23,500,000 but gaining 30 year old keeper Federico Marchetti from Lazio for €17,000,000. - Roma chief rivals Lazio did not have a very good winter mercato, losing the aforementioned Marchetti as well as 28 year old midfielder Hernanes, who goes to Atlético Madrid in a €11,500,000 deal. -Rather quiet this winter, AC Milan have picked up 27 year old keeper Igor Akinfeer, who'll join the club at season's end following the expiration of his contract with CSKA Moscow, the only club with whom Akinfeer's ever played. -New Napoli gaffer Rafa Benetiz continues to build his squad, picking up highly rated Cameroonian defender Nicolas N'koulou from Marseille for €10,500,000 -A record Manchester City transfer at one time that failed to pan out, 26 year old striker Jô is back in Europe for the first time since 2010, joining Parma on a €6,500,000 deal from Atlético Mineiro. |
