NASCAR Career Playthrough 1997-???? (NR2003)

NASCAR Racing 2003 Season from Papyrus is a simulation racing game for PC. I played this game as a college aged young man back when it first was released. I played it for a few years but with things in life I moved away from home and eventually lost my copy of the game. Well, with the decline of my interest in real-life NASCAR and the pretty much unplayable console NASCAR games I purchased another copy of this gem to dive back into the game. The mods/utilities available are what really led me back to playing this game again. It is truly a classic and has stood the test of time.

However, there was always something missing from this game that early 2000's console NASCAR games did get right...a good career mode. Whether it's NASCAR Dirt To Daytona, NASCAR Thunder 2004 or NASCAR Chase For The Nextel Cup 2005 all had very good career modes. You could work your way from a slow car or lower series up to a top-tier ride in a top series. You could change teams, pick different sponsors and build your career into whatever you wanted to.

Well, I have decided to do all that with NR2003 with the use of the many mods, tracks and carsets available I will be going on my own journey through NASCAR history. We will start in 1997 and be running in one of or all of the top NASCAR divisions. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, the NASCAR Busch Series and of course the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Here are some things to expect in this blog:

- Each season will start with a season preview with drivers, teams and schedule for the upcoming season.

- Some things that happened in real life may not happen in my universe. One example is North Wilkesboro Speedway will never lose it's date in this adventure. Another example is some drivers/teams will be different than what happened in real life.

- Each race will have detailed posts for practice sessions, qualifying sessions, the race and certain post race things like pit road interviews and what not.

- I will post a calendar at the beginning of each week with each practice day, qualifying day and race day listed for each series. Weeks will be Monday-Sunday since Winston Cup race day will be mostly on Sundays.

- I will be posting action pictures, recaps, media posts and other little things to help bring this blog to life.

- Difficulty will be based on what year I am running and which series/team I may be running in/for. As a default I will run Winston Cup on 100% difficulty my rookie season or any partial season, 99% for the Busch Series and 98% for the Truck Series. Each team will have a rating based on the previous season and it will be 0-3 stars. Each star will take a percentage off of the difficulty for that series. Also, I can get percentage points taken off each season by meeting certain driver criteria. I will explain this further in each season preview but an example would be if I run a full Winston Cup season as a rookie and finish in the top-25 I can get a percentage point taken off the difficulty for the next season. Once you get a point off it will stay at that level unless I lose my ride or change teams to a lower tier team.

I hope all this makes sense but it will be gone over more along the way. Anyway, I hope you enjoy following along and I will see you in the next one with a introduction to the driver.

Driver: Steve Fulton

Hometown: Belews Creek, NC

Sponsor: Carolina Marina on Belews Lake, North Carolina

Team: Fulton Motorsports

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series: Full Schedule

NASCAR Busch Series: Limited Schedule

Experience: Rookie

Steve Fulton will be competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series full-time in 1997 going for the rookie of the year award. He will also be running a limited NASCAR Busch Series schedule to keep his rookie of the year eligibility for the truck series and a later Busch series season.

He will be driving the #83 Dodge Ram in the trucks and the #83 Pontiac Grand Prix in Busch competition. Carolina Marina will be backing him for the 1997 season in both series.

The team is owned by the Fulton family and is based out of Belews Creek, NC. This is their first year running both series as they make the jump from the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series late model ranks to the Craftsman Truck Series and the Busch Series.

Re: NASCAR Career Playthrough 1997-???? (NR2003)

Championship Points System (All Series):

Equal points per race

  • In the 1975 season, a new scoring system was introduced, created by Bob Latford. Equal points are awarded in all races, regardless of their length or purse.
  • Between rank 1 and 6 Starting at 175 there were 5 points gaps, between rank 6 and 11 were 4 points gaps and below rank 11 - 3 points gaps respectively.
  • Along with the points based on the finishing position, a driver who leads at least one lap in a race would be credited 5 bonus points. Along with the 5 bonus points, only one driver in a race would receive an additional 5 bonus points for leading the most laps, so the driver who led the most would receive 10 bonus points altogether.

Qualifying Format (Except for Daytona 500):

NASCAR Winston Cup Series- There will be 2 rounds of qualifying. During first round qualifying the top-25 will be locked into the race. In second round qualifying positions 26-35 will be set. All other positions will be awarded by provisionals. The first 5 races of the season go back to the previous years points to determine provisional starters. After that, the current season point standings are used. The final spot in the field is reserved for the most recent past champion not qualified. If no past champions are left normal points provisional will be used.

Pole winners will be eligible for exhibition race at Daytona each year. Fastest second-round qualifiers will be eligible for the qualifier for the exhibition race at Daytona.

NASCAR Busch Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series- These series will have a single round of qualifying. The top-35 will lock in to the race. The remaining positions will be provisionals based on points just like in the Winston Cup Series.

Rookie Of The Year Award:

1. The highest finishing rookie is awarded ten points, the second-highest finishing rookie earns nine points, etc.

2. One point is awarded to any rookie who attempts to qualify for an event.

3. If a rookie finishes in the top-10 they earn bonus points. Ten for first down to one point for tenth place.

4. To be eligible for the award the driver must have ran no more than seven races in any previous season.

5. Drivers that compete in more than five races in a higher series aren't eligible for the award in a lower series.

NASCAR Manufacturer's Championship:

The winning manufacturer earns nine points, while the second-highest finishing manufacturer earns six points. The third-highest manufacturer earns four points, and the fourth-highest three points.

Re: NASCAR Career Playthrough 1997-???? (NR2003)

The 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series season is on the horizon but first we will look back at the highlights of the 1996 season before moving ahead.

1996 Winston Cup Champion: Terry Labonte
1996 Raybestos Rookie of the Year: Johnny Benson
1996 Owner's Championship: Hendrick Motorsports
1996 Manufacturer's Championship: Chevrolet

Hendrick Motorsports enjoyed the most success in 1996 with Terry Labonte taking the title and Jeff Gordon finishing runner-up. Hendrick Motorsports also took home the Owner's Championship. Ford teams were just a tick behind the Chevrolet teams but Dale Jarrett did finish in third place in the final standings while taking the win in 3 of the 5 'crown jewels' on the schedule. Pontiacs really struggled with only one win in 1996 by Bobby Hamilton for Petty Enterprises. A pontiac driver did take home the Rookie of the Year title but only one rookie competed in all the races and that was Johnny Benson.

1996 Busch Clash Winner: Dale Jarrett
1996 Daytona 500 Winner: Dale Jarrett
1996 Winston All-Star Race Winner: Michael Waltrip
1996 Coca-Cola 600 Winner: Dale Jarrett
1996 Pepsi 400 Winner: Sterling Marlin
1996 Brickyard 400 Winner: Dale Jarrett
1996 Southern 500 Winner: Jeff Gordon
1996 Most Wins: Jeff Gordon (10)
1996 Most Poles: Jeff Gordon (5)

Now, we look ahead to the 1997 season. This years rookie class will be more competitive with 3 drivers scheduled to run a full season so the winner will not be by default like last season. Mike Skinner is the favorite to take the crown as he graduates from the Craftsman Truck Series for Richard Childress Racing to become teammates with Dale Earnhardt. Now we will take a look at the drivers and teams as well as the schedule for the 1997 Winston Cup Series.

Re: NASCAR Career Playthrough 1997-???? (NR2003)

The 1996 Busch Series season saw one of the closest championship battles in history. Randy LaJoie won the championship in his #74 Fina Chevrolet for BACE Motorsports. David Green was his closest competition finishing 29 points back and runner-up. No other driver was within 500 points of the pair as the two drivers went at it all the way to the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. This season looks to bring more competition to the top spot so let's take one last look back on 1996.

1996 NASCAR Busch Series Champion: Randy LaJoie
1996 NASCAR Busch Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year: Glenn Allen, Jr.

Re: NASCAR Career Playthrough 1997-???? (NR2003)

The 1997 NASCAR Craftsman Turck Series season is ready to come to life. This year the trucks will join the Busch Series and Winston Cup Series at the Daytona International Speedway to kick off their season. The 1996 season was a three man show with Ron Hornaday, Jr., Jack Sprague and Mike Skinner battling for the title. Hornaday was able to take the crown for owner Dale Earnhardt and will look to back it up with another strong run in 1997. Mike Skinner graduated from the trucks and is now a full-time driver in the Winston Cup Series so which driver will jump in to fill his role? A veteran, a young rookie or his replacement Jay Sauter. Join us in 1997 and we will watch it all unfold.

Let's take one last look back on the 1996 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

1996 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion: Ron Hornaday, Jr.

1996 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year: Bryan Reffner
