Conor Gallagher is poised to become a player this week after passing a medical and the Copa del Rey champions telling London outfit Chelsea they will meet the 22-year-old’s transfer fee. The fee is understood to be around €70m (£60m) which has been widely reported.
The deal is expected to be announced imminently by the Spanish club, Gallagher having informed them of his wish to leave after suffering from consecutive loans to lesser clubs although having performed at a level where he has been selected for the National team. Personal terms between the player and Real have been agreed. Gallagher will earn a basic salary of around €100,000 a week with considerable bonuses, according to sources a €780,000 signing bonus and a 10 goal bonus which net him €2m per season, and is in position to sign the three-year contract essentially worth €22,380,000.
For the Real Madrid manager, Argentinian Oscar Alvarez, the deal signals a continuation of fielding younger talent with considerable upside as opposed to breaking the bank for a Galactico. Madrid secured Eduardo Camavinga on the cheap for €28m last summer. This ends his search for a long-term successor to Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric. Alvarez began the quest for a replacement for the Croatian last summer and had to persuade the midfielder to not retire after they defeated Barcelona in the Copa del Rey a few months ago.
Gallagher is a different class of midfielder who can vary from playing an attacking position to defending box-to-box and pivoting to become a deep lying playmaker. He has many similarities to Luka Modric, who is one of the best box-to-box playmakers we have seen over the last decade. With how football is played these days, that type of playmaker is a rare breed. Alvarez’s desire to acquire Gallagher can be understood when you watch the vision of Gallagher where his good passing range, technical skills, defensive contributions and tactical organisation make him the ideal well-rounded midfielder. The Los Blanocs manager admires the Englishman, who scored 9 goals in 38 appearances for Crystal Place this season. Alvarez believes he has the ability to suit Real Madrid’s emphatic passing style.
Real Madrid surely wasn’t Gallagher’s first-choice destination – but decided to make to move to the Spanish capital after Alvarez persuaded the young midfielder he would eventually replace Luka Modric in midfield. Manchester United, Liverpool and a host of other teams were vying for the young superstar but it was the allure of Los Blancos which persuaded Gallagher to follow in the footsteps of another English midfielder, David Beckham into the Bernabéu.
This past season Real have played the majority of their matches with all midfielders on the wrong side of 30. Brazilian Casemiro recently turned 30. Toni Kroos will turn 33 by January and Luka Modric is in the twilight of his years, soon to be 37 by the time September comes about. Madrid have made it no secret they intend to deploy Gallagher (22) and Camavinga (19) into the starting eleven soon enough. Federico Valverde impressed last season and is soon to turn 24. He may join the starting eleven by the end of the season. Real Madrid’s starting eleven could look distinctively different for the first time in over a decade.
One player who is unlikely to join Madrid is Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman has an asking fee of €405m from PSG, who look set to improve his wages to remain at a club which can’t seem to win the Champions League despite a plethora of big signings.
For now, Real Madrid seem content in the continuation of swooping in for young talent instead of breaking the bank for Galactico’s who may not fit into the team culture.
