Re: 2022 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Houston Astros

I don't think the declining numbers have as much to do with the Houston cheating scandal as it does to do with them not being very "buzzy" to the casual viewer. (In addition to declining sports viewing in general, baseball's current negative reputation among casuals, etc., etc.) The Astros do not have a national fanbase and this was their 4th World Series appearance in 6 years.

Casual fans were spoiled with the 3-year stretch of 2015-2017, each featuring a matchup between teams that hadn't won for decades. Even Dodgers vs Red Sox didn't generate nearly as many viewers as anticipated. Aside from Yankees/Dodgers, I wonder if any 2022 matchup could've really delivered great numbers. I'm curious about how much buzz a Mets vs Mariners World Series would've generated.

It's completely anecdotal, but me and the circle of baseball fans I talk to all didn't get as engaged with the playoffs as a whole because of the new format. I know, plenty here have are fine with it, so I'm not trying to start another debate where people defend how they like devaluing the regular season, but I do wonder how many people around the country didn't get as engaged because of the new format.

Baseball just really isn't that great anymore. Manfred has just watered down the sport. Used to be my favorite. It's about 3rd now. Never thought that would happen in a million years.

The three 100 win teams in the NL getting bounced early killed it for me. Granted I didn’t see the Mets doing much, but it would have been much more of a marquee matchup to have the Braves or Dodgers vs Houston

Won't disagree. Those were the only two teams that really are on the same level as Houston. Once they were eliminated everyone knew that Houston was likely walking to a title. They weren't really challenged the entire postseason at all.

Re: 2022 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Houston Astros

I mean, 2021 had the "old" playoff format, featured the Red Sox and Dodgers in the LCS, much closer series, and the ratings were still historically bad (barely ahead of this year; 2020 had the lowest ratings ever).

It's more streaming plus end of monoculture than anything else. Both Super Bowl and NBA Finals TV ratings are down considerably from what they were even 5 years ago. Raptors/Warriors in 2019 had way better ratings (!!!) than Celtics/Warriors last year (and this doesn't include Canadian viewership).

I believe this is correct as I BELIEVE I heard Neilson will start reporting numbers from Netflix (only one I've heard so far) next year.
