Re: MLB Off-Topic

Stealing signs by itself is fine. As a catcher, you should be varying them all the time as you know teams are doing stuff in the past and have done it recently.

Using devices to signal in is crossing the lines.

Pitchers need to speed up and stop holding the ball so long. The video is delayed and throwing quickly will stop the ability to signal back in time.

Maybe all the pitchers need to get together and strike by throwing at every hitter until MLB does something.

Looks like MLB is refuting that any players wore buzzers...not sure if they’d admit it if they did, but there’s that. Lots of disinformation floating around though for sure...

Meanwhile, Manfred looks like a bafoon.

It'll be interesting to see what Manfred says and does the next few days. There HAS to be rule changes somehow with video feeds around the park.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

I’m with you. These other examples are other examples — and they all suck.

I don’t like the “well it’s happened before ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” attitude.

People probably were outraged, and now they have an outlet to express it. Not to mention dig up video of trash cans being banged, guys running away to change their jersey, etc.

I’d take Rose betting on baseball over all this sign signaling ****. It’s downright cheating and I’m not cool with it.

The issue is they can't really stop it.

They can delay all video broadcasts 30 seconds, but that would only work for tv broadcast and it would affect gambling too much.
Direct video in stadium probably wouldn't be affected.
You could jam all communication frequencies, but fans wouldn't put up with that.
Any hardwired equipment would still work so you could still steal the sign and put it in the jumbotron.
You can use earpieces, but that may be a safety issue.
Then you have the issue with the catcher needing to talk or having someone else calling the pitches.

The best MLB can do is say any sign stealing being done outside of the dugout gets you suspended for life.

Teams can hire people and tools to find patterns based on the pitches called, thrown and scan the stadium for signals. Not easy to do, but MLB doesn't appear to want to stop it.

There are definitely less sinister ways to look at the Altuve HR off Chapman: Chapman hung a slider after missing wildly with his fastball....and a great hitter like Altuve knows how to hit a meatball when he sees one.

Sure, historical context is important; the Astros aren't the first team to use technology to steal and relay signs, but I don't really like the slide into nihilism here ("the Astros cheated, but so did past teams. So what!), which is the impression I'm getting from you.
