Joe Montana was not the only change in 1981. The defense was what carried the, 81 team.
John Elway had a good defense also. Dennis Smith, Karl Mecklanburg, Simon Fletcher, Rulon Jones, Greg Kraken, Mike Hayden, then later Steve Fuller.

So Rex Grossman is one of the great QBs, correct?

You missed the point.

But to do you reallw want to compare the amount of talent each had around them, because I assure it's not even close.

Your point was Montana was the difference between the 80 and 81 Niner teams. When in fact it was the change in defense that was the big difference. In 1980 the Niners were the 22nd ranked defense in the league (out of 28 teams). In 1981 they were #3. That defense is really what propelled them to the SB that year.

Joe Montana controlled the clock very well that is why the defense looked much better also. He gave less time to the opposition and forced them to go more aggressive.

LOL. Yeah that was the reason they jumped 20 spots. Had nothing to do with adding 2 hall of famers, and 4 pro bowl caliber defenders.

That was part of it too. Would the defense look worst if the 49ers had no offense? Yes it would.

Yeah, he was horrible at throwing short and was much better throwing deep.
