Rating your teams 2007 draft

Now that this season is coming to a close, this will complete 3 full years of the draft class of 2007. This typically when you can truly grade a draft.

So rate your teams draft class. I’ll start with the Bears

1st Round – 31st Pick: Greg Olsen(TE), Miami(FL)
Has shown flashes of being an all-pro TE BUT he has yet to become that dominate TE that most Bears fans is hoping for. He might not be cut out to be a TE because as a TE he should block sometimes. Heck, even Tony Gonzalez blocks on occasion. Either Olsen cannot block or he just doesn’t want to. Maybe he should shed a couple of pounds and become a WR?
Pick Grade: B-

2nd round – 62nd Pick: Dan Bazuin(DE), Central Michigan
Not sure if this guy ever took an NFL snap. Has been injured since day one. Now sitting on the Texans practice squad.
Pick Grade: F

3rd Round – 93rd Pick: Garrett Wolfe(RB), Northern Illinois
He should have been now what Darren Sproles is for the Chargers today. A change of pace 3rd down RB with good hand. However, due to the coaching staff, they like to run him between the tackles and watch him get knocked down for 2-3 yard losses. If he was playing for team that had a good coaching staff like the Colts, Patriots or Eagles Wolfe would be a dangerous weapon. However, since he plays for the Bears he’s nothing but a special teamer.
Pick Grade: D+

3rd Round – 94th Pick: Michael Okwo(LB), Stanford
Never understood this one. The Bears during that time were good at LB. So we wasted a 3rd round pick to get this guy? I know we had two 3rd round picks but it was no reason to just waste one. Especially when a guy like Steve Breaston was still on the board at that time.
Pick Grade: F

4th Round – 130th Pick: Josh Beekman(C), Boston College
I actually can see a future in this kid. I’m just wondering if the Bears coaching staff see it? Last year he played LG and played it pretty well. Then he gets benched for Frank Omiyale. For what? Omiyale has played like crap and the staff finally put Beekman back on the field. He should be Krutez replacement next year. But knowing the Bears management, they’ll waste his talents on the bench.
Pick Grade: C+

5th Round – 167th Pick: Kevin Payne(DB), La-Monroe
Knowing that Mike Brown’s days were numbered in they finally decide to address the issue in the 5th round? Here’s a hint: your not going to find a lot of safeties drafted in the 5th round that have a significant impact on a team’s defense. And Payne is no different. He’s at best an average NFL safety.
Pick Grade: C-

5th Round – 168th Pick: Corey Graham(DB), New Hampshire
Nickel back at best. Nothing significant. I don’t think you expect much from a 5th round pick but he at least did get on the field a couple of times. Can’t say that for their 2nd round pick.
Pick Grade: C+

7th Round – 221st Pick: Trumaine McBride(DB), Mississippi
Has at least seen the field. But when he has, he plays like a 7th round pick. Nothing shocking here.
Pick Grade: D

7th Round – 241st Pick: Arron Brant(G), Iowa State
Hasn’t played a snap. Nothing new from a late 7th rounder.
Pick Grade: D-

Overall Grade: D+
Could be better if they were able to use Beekman and Wolfe correctly. Not saying that these two are all-pros but they should be able to contribute if they had an adequate coaching staff.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

Patriots 2007 Draft is hysterical looking back on it!

Round 1 - Brandon Meriwether - S
-Becoming one of the best safeties in the game IMO. Plays the pass well, and is a beast in the box. Dude lights people up on a regular basis.

Grade: A+

Round 4 - Randy Moss - Traded to Oak
-Look what he's done; disregard these past few weeks.

Grade: A+

Round 4 - Kareem Brown - DT
-Who?

Grade: F

Round 5 - Clint Oldenburg - OT
-Who??

Grade: F

Round 6 - Justin Rogers - OLB
-Who???

Grade: F

Round 6 - Mike Richardson - CB
-Who????
-Yes, I know, he was actually on the team and played special teams... But seriously.

Grade: D-

Round 6 - Justise Hairston - RB
-Who?????

Grade: F

Round 6 - Corey Hilliard - OT
-Who??????

Grade: F

Round 7 - Oscar Lua - ILB
-Who???????

Grade: F

Round 7 - Mike Elgin - G/C
-Who????????

Grade: F

--------------------------

Overall Grade: C

Immense success with two picks, failure with the rest.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

Washington Redskins

1st round - 6th overall - Laron Landry(SS), LSU

Showed a lot of promise his 1st year being named a Pro Bowl alternate but his flaws are being exposed big time now. He's a hard hitter who doesn't wrap up and can't cover to save his life. He's vulnerable on double moves and since he moved to FS he has given up so many big plays. If the Skins can find a FS and move him to SS where he can play close to the line then he could excel. Until then he's an overpaid bum (five-year, $41.5million).

Pick Grade: C

5th round - 143rd overall - Dallas Sartz (LB), USC

Somehow we manage to draft the only LB out of USC who isn't worth a damn. He never even the team or any team for that matter.

Pick Grade: F

6th round - 179th overall - HB Blades(LB) , Pittsburgh

Not bad value as he has stepped in on numerous occassions (5 starts in '08) at ILB & OLB. He's never going to be a great LB but he adds depth and is reliable in pass coverage and against the run. A solid pick.

Pick Grade: B-

6th round - 205 overall - Jordan Palmer(QB) - UTEP

Never made the team as he was cut his rookie year. Another wasted pick that could have been used to add some depth to the OL/DL. Now backing up his big brother (the one with actual talent)

Pick Grade: D

7th round - 216th overall - Tyler Ecker (TE), Michigan

Got hurt his rookie year and was placed on IR. Then he was cut the next year. Didn't expect much out of this pick anyway.

Pick Grade: F

Overall: D

One starter and he's the weak link in the secondary. Only 1 player provides depth (HB Blades). Could have had AP, Patrick Willis, Revis, Leon Hall or some other young studs.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

Ours has been abysmal: Dallas Cowboys

1 (26) Anthony Spencer LB, Purdue
GRADE B/C: Not the sack master we'd hoped for but very stout against the run brings alot of pressure to the QB. Starting to come on & make plays for the squad this year.

3 (67) James Marten OT, Boston College
GRADE F: Not on roster

4 (103) Isaiah Stanback WR, Washington
GRADE F: Not on roster

4 (122) Doug Free OT, Northern Illinois
GRADE C: Getting some playing time now due to injury to Columbo.

6 (178) Nick Folk K, Arizona
GRADE C: About to get cut.

6 (195) Deon Anderson FB, Connecticut
GRADE C: Basic, run-blocking FB

7 (212) Courtney Brown CB, Cal-Poly
GRADE F: Not on roster

7 (237) Alan Ball CB, Illinois
GRADE D: Getting some playing time due to injuries.

Overall a hoe-hum draft unless Spencer can continue to produce & get better with more playing time. Anderson has been good for the run game but with Witten, Phillips & Bennett as blockers (TEs) as well, he's replaceable. Folk, well, minus the last few games has been pretty consistent.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

3 Joe Thomas T Wisconsin- A+++++++
He's the best young LT in the NFL.

22 Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame- C-
Not working out, but he has only had 11 starts. Not looking good.

53 Eric Wright CB UNLV- B+
He's been fantastic, but I'm not sure if he is shutdown yet.

140 Brandon McDonald CB Memphis- B-
He's a pretty good nickle CB, below average two corner.

200 Mel Purcell DE Hawaii- F
As far as I know, he's out of the NFL

213 Chase Pittman DE LSU- F
See Percell

234 Syndric Steptoe WR Arizona- D-
He was a decent punt returner and started last year. Now, I have no idea where he is.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

1 (9) Ted Ginn Jr. WR, Ohio State
Grade D: Showed flashes as a return man, but has been a bust at WR. Probably won't be on the roster for much longer.

2 (40) John Beck QB, BYU
Grade F: Aah. The Stormin' Mormon. He's probably shell shocked after starting a few games for the 1-15 squad. He's a backup for Cam Cameron's Ravens.

2 (60) Samson Satele C, Hawaii
Grade C: One of the better picks of our draft. He's not on the roster anymore, but he was a decent starter for a few years. We got a couple of picks for him. He wasn't big enough to overpower NTs like Wilfork and Jenkins and wasn't smart enough to out-technique them.

3 (71) Lorenzo Booker HB, FSU
Grade F: Not on the roster.

4 (108) Paul Soliai NT, Utah
Grade B: Looked like a total bust for a few years, but Sparano and the coaching staff along with his wife have whipped him into shape. He's been a decent rotational player and has an opportunity to win his job if he plays good down the stretch. Sadly, he's probably the best pick in the draft for us.

6 (181) Reagan Mauia FB, Hawaii
Grade F: Not on the roster. We've found a much better replacement for him though in Lousaka Polite.

6 (199) Drew Mormino C, Central Michigan
Grade F: Not on the roster.

7 (219) Kelvin Smith LB, Syracuse
Grade F: Not on the roster.

7 (225) Brandon Fields P, Michigan State
Grade B: Solid punter.

It's sad that this is probably one of the better pre-Parcells drafts we've had this decade. Still, Cameron and Mueller were total failures. This draft was one of the many reasons we went 1-15. On the bright side, the 2008 draft is second only the 1983 class for us where we picked up Marino, Mark Clayton, and Reggie Roby.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

1 21 Reggie Nelson Free Safety Florida

Reggie is getting better all the time. They've been forced to play him at CB which is definitely not his strong suit.

GRADE: C

2 48 Justin Durant Linebacker Hampton

Justin's a good linebacker. Pretty good pick.

GRADE: B+

3 79 Mike Walker Wide Receiver UCF

Now Mike Sims-Walker, he's the best young receiver that Jacksonville has. Very good pick for round #3. Very very good.

GRADE: A-

4 101 Adam Podlesh Punter Maryland

Adam's a good punter. Meh.

GRADE: B

4 113 Brian Smith Defensive End Missouri

Never played with a hip injury... fail.

GRADE: F

5 149 Uche Nwaneri Offensive Guard Purdue

Played all last year for the depleted offensive line. I'm pretty sure he's been playing this season, but I can't find stats for OLinemen.

GRADE: C

5 150 Josh Gattis Safety Wake Forest

Who?

GRADE: F

5 166 Derek Landri Defensive Tackle Notre Dame

Derek made a great play in the playoff game against Pitt, picking off Big Ben. I think he didn't make the team the next year... he's currently with the Panthers.

GRADE: C

7 229 John Broussard Wide Receiver San Jose State

Didn't do much. Now with Detroit.

GRADE: D

7 251 Chad Nkang Strong Safety Elon

Good special teams player. Great name. Now a free agent.

GRADE: C

7 252 Andrew Carnahan Offensive Tackle Arizona State

Practice squad guy. Now with the Giants... on their IR.

GRADE: F

Decent draft up top.

Re: Rating your teams 2007 draft

Jarvis Moss (17th overall):
F, special teamer making Top 20 money

Tim Crowder (56th overall):
D-, not on the team but atleast he got 4.5 sacks in his first season

Ryan Harris (70th overall):
A, RT anchor for this team, started off shaky with his back surgery but he's going to be around here for awhile

Marcus Thomas (121st overall):
C-/C. I just haven't noticed much from him and he's the backup for Fields at NT
