Rating your teams 2007 draft
Now that this season is coming to a close, this will complete 3 full years of the draft class of 2007. This typically when you can truly grade a draft.
So rate your teams draft class. I’ll start with the Bears
1st Round – 31st Pick: Greg Olsen(TE), Miami(FL)
Has shown flashes of being an all-pro TE BUT he has yet to become that dominate TE that most Bears fans is hoping for. He might not be cut out to be a TE because as a TE he should block sometimes. Heck, even Tony Gonzalez blocks on occasion. Either Olsen cannot block or he just doesn’t want to. Maybe he should shed a couple of pounds and become a WR?
Pick Grade: B-
2nd round – 62nd Pick: Dan Bazuin(DE), Central Michigan
Not sure if this guy ever took an NFL snap. Has been injured since day one. Now sitting on the Texans practice squad.
Pick Grade: F
3rd Round – 93rd Pick: Garrett Wolfe(RB), Northern Illinois
He should have been now what Darren Sproles is for the Chargers today. A change of pace 3rd down RB with good hand. However, due to the coaching staff, they like to run him between the tackles and watch him get knocked down for 2-3 yard losses. If he was playing for team that had a good coaching staff like the Colts, Patriots or Eagles Wolfe would be a dangerous weapon. However, since he plays for the Bears he’s nothing but a special teamer.
Pick Grade: D+
3rd Round – 94th Pick: Michael Okwo(LB), Stanford
Never understood this one. The Bears during that time were good at LB. So we wasted a 3rd round pick to get this guy? I know we had two 3rd round picks but it was no reason to just waste one. Especially when a guy like Steve Breaston was still on the board at that time.
Pick Grade: F
4th Round – 130th Pick: Josh Beekman(C), Boston College
I actually can see a future in this kid. I’m just wondering if the Bears coaching staff see it? Last year he played LG and played it pretty well. Then he gets benched for Frank Omiyale. For what? Omiyale has played like crap and the staff finally put Beekman back on the field. He should be Krutez replacement next year. But knowing the Bears management, they’ll waste his talents on the bench.
Pick Grade: C+
5th Round – 167th Pick: Kevin Payne(DB), La-Monroe
Knowing that Mike Brown’s days were numbered in they finally decide to address the issue in the 5th round? Here’s a hint: your not going to find a lot of safeties drafted in the 5th round that have a significant impact on a team’s defense. And Payne is no different. He’s at best an average NFL safety.
Pick Grade: C-
5th Round – 168th Pick: Corey Graham(DB), New Hampshire
Nickel back at best. Nothing significant. I don’t think you expect much from a 5th round pick but he at least did get on the field a couple of times. Can’t say that for their 2nd round pick.
Pick Grade: C+
7th Round – 221st Pick: Trumaine McBride(DB), Mississippi
Has at least seen the field. But when he has, he plays like a 7th round pick. Nothing shocking here.
Pick Grade: D
7th Round – 241st Pick: Arron Brant(G), Iowa State
Hasn’t played a snap. Nothing new from a late 7th rounder.
Pick Grade: D-
Overall Grade: D+
Could be better if they were able to use Beekman and Wolfe correctly. Not saying that these two are all-pros but they should be able to contribute if they had an adequate coaching staff.
