Don Coryell passes away

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5347434

Quote:
SAN DIEGO -- Don Coryell, the innovative coach whose San Diego Chargers teams featured some of the most dynamic passing attacks in league history, has died. He was 85.

The Chargers confirmed Coryell died Thursday at Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, just outside of San Diego. The team did not release the cause of death, but Coryell had been in poor health for some time.

Coryell is one of the founding fathers of the modern passing game. He coached at San Diego State and in the NFL with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chargers.

From 1978-86 with the Chargers, his "Air Coryell" offense -- led by quarterback Dan Fouts -- set numerous NFL records.

He's the first coach to win 100 games in college and pro football, but he never reached the Super Bowl.

Re: Don Coryell passes away

One of the greatest ever. I loved those Chargers teams from the early 80's. I remember a crappy Bears team beating them and jumping up and down in my living room like a little kid.....well I was one at the time.

Fouts, Muncie, Winslow, Jefferson, Joyner. Man those were fun teams.

One of the true innovators in NFL history. RIP.

It's an effin' crying shame that this day came without him being in the Hall of Fame.

Re: Don Coryell passes away

I am not old enough (22) to have watched any of the games he revolutionized live, but I did watch and learn about him through dvds and online material.

Its a sad day for Charger fans, and NFL fans.

RIP

I guarantee the voters will come to their senses and put him in next year just because of this.
