Everyone is counting the Lions team as a detractor for Calvin Johnson, but it may be a pro to him putting up numbers. As the only option, he's bound to get the most looks, even if he's being double and triple teamed. Fitzgerald had to contend with Boldin, and to an extent, Breaston, yet still put up ridiculous numbers... and his postseason play in the Cardinals Super Bowl year was a sight to behold. He dominated the field... I remember watching the Eagles/Cardinals NFCCG and the Eagles just didn't have anyone to match up against him. So anyway, I don't completely buy the team-around-him-sucks argument. I think it can go either way.

I think everyone is too enamored with the physical traits. It's not like Fitzgerald is that far off Cal Johnson. So far, Fitz has been better. CJ's getting into the meat of his career just now, though, so it'll be cool to see how it pans out.

That's not to say Calvin Johnson isn't a great receiver, he is a top 5 caliber WR, and has freakish athletic ability... but physical tools alone doesn't catapult you to the top.

Especially against a veteran like Fitz who has proven time and time again to be so incredibly reliable, with incredible focus and concentration on making tough catches especially in huge games. This is the guy who set the Post-season receiving record with 546 receiving yards, and 7 Touchdowns in the '08 Playoffs. That puts him alongside the company of Jerry Rice.

Not to say Calvin can't accomplish great feats like that, but as of now I'd say Fitz is the more "accomplished" receiver.

If I had to put a rough WR ranking it would go something like:
-Fitzgerald
-A. Johnson
-C. Johnson
-R. Moss
-S. Smith (Car)

I think you could interchange parts on that list and honestly I'm leaving out some great names like Boldin, Wayne..etc, and there are a lot of up and comers who might soon be able to claim a spot among the top.

all things being exactly the same, you'd rather have calvin johnson than larry fitzgerald.

however, fitz is better as it stands right now.

Calvin Johnson so far has only had one year where he has stayed healthy. It was in 08 on the worst team in NFL history. His stats in that year:

78 catches, 1331 yards, 12 Tds.

Keep in mind that was on the worst team of all time.(0-16). The guy has never had a consistent QB in his career. Give him Kurt Warner, and he'd produce just as much if not more than Fitz.

EDIT: Yes I'm biased, I'm a GT fan lol
